00:08 There we go test. Alright. everything is up and running now.

00:11 fantastic for those. You had me . Well, let me just start

00:15 , this is a Mp two, in the right place. This is

00:19 my basic information, You can see offices. S. R.

00:23 That's not the building directly behind That's S. R. One

00:26 R. Two is a little ugly building just north of that on the

00:29 side of the construction. Um My number, if you call me if

00:32 there if I answer the phone, . If not don't leave a message

00:36 way is to email me. I to email usually within 24 hours except

00:41 holidays and breaks and weekends and after . Um Rule one of life.

00:47 just gonna tell you this right establish your hours. You don't want

00:50 contacting you at two o'clock in the if you don't want to talk to

00:53 . All right, so if your texting you at two o'clock in the

00:57 , Don't answer those. Just let be right. So if you email

01:01 like at 2:00 AM, when are gonna get the response in the nine

01:06 ? We'll probably in my case but usually about eight o'clock or

01:11 All right, so this is the if you took my class last year

01:14 today is gonna be seem really really because I'm just gonna go over what

01:18 gonna talk about what the class how the class is designed and this

01:22 an extension of A. M. . One. All right? So

01:25 can kind of tune out for a bit if you'd like to today and

01:28 fine. Alright. But further you taken me before, you don't know

01:32 my classes are like. That's what is gonna be about. We're gonna

01:34 for the first half about the structure the course, what's required of

01:38 what my expectations are, and then latter half of the course is I'm

01:41 teach you how to study and all people who took me before at least

01:45 goes oh my goodness again. And answer is yes until we all get

01:47 right, I'm gonna keep doing it way right? And you can ask

01:52 you're new to this class does studying way help. And there are people

01:55 know who have who have taken me and they're going yeah this way the

01:59 is easier and helps me get better . So um and it's something that

02:03 can apply to all your classes. that's kind of why we do

02:06 Uh the other reason is because 90% of my office hours are usually spent

02:12 about how to do better in the and how to study how to prepare

02:16 so might as well put it right here on the first day of

02:19 So you've all made that new year right? Just like at the beginning

02:23 the year you said this is the . Everything is gonna change and I'm

02:26 do things better. I'm gonna change I do. I'm actually gonna get

02:29 . I'm gonna eat right? I'm exercise and I'm gonna go to class

02:33 I'm gonna do well. And let's lean into that and we'll break those

02:38 in a couple of weeks. Alright. So first off, um

02:43 syllabus, make sure you go through syllabus. If you're not familiar with

02:46 the syllabus is, it's basically like end user license agreement, our

02:50 And so what it does, it you what's in the course, what's

02:53 of you and what you're agreeing to . All right. A lot of

02:57 don't realize that it's not just a of what's going on in the

03:00 It's saying I agree that I am going to do the class the way

03:05 you designed it. So that means homework assignments, the way they're set

03:08 the test when they're done when they're be you're agreeing to do that.

03:13 not agreeing to say I will do test on my schedule. You

03:16 after I get back from las Vegas me and my girlfriends are heading there

03:20 spring break and we may stay for extra three weeks. Okay. It's

03:25 doing it this way. All It has the policies for the

03:28 It talks about incomplete withdrawal talks about honesty has everything you're gonna need.

03:35 the reason we do this. Believe or not is because you guys don't

03:38 the student handbook. What does the handbook? Yeah, it's pages and

03:43 and pages and then So what's happened we've seen creep into all your

03:48 Have you noticed that your syllabi have bigger and bigger and bigger?

03:52 Alright. For me, my first syllabus was one page today. It's

03:56 pages because it has everything in the handbook that you guys should have known

04:00 . That's all there. And it's the stuff that's in the student

04:03 Alright, So be familiar with what need to do for the course.

04:07 two basic things you should know Um Anything you ever need at

04:12 Of h can be found through the page www dot E. D.

04:17 dot E. D. U. you gotta do is just look for

04:19 little search thing and just type in you're looking for and it should take

04:23 directly there. Alright. But in event that you can't find it um

04:27 gonna be usually within two or three from the front page. That's usually

04:31 it's designed the things that you should right now or you're dropping withdrawal dates

04:35 last day to drop any class is to be february 1st that's without a

04:39 um That's after the ad and drop , which means there's amount of money

04:45 the university gets to keep up to date. So make sure if you're

04:50 a class after the drop add period you really need to drop the class

04:54 you're gonna start having to pay out money for the class that you're not

04:59 any more and it's portion. So like the closer you get to that

05:02 , the more money we get the date is the last day to drop

05:06 course date. Alright. So that's 19th. That is like a week

05:10 classes end. That's crazy. But what that does it allows you

05:15 make some really important decisions. So of you are not going to do

05:18 in the first exam and you're gonna an emotional response of like what was

05:22 ? I shouldn't be going I'm not not cut out for this type of

05:25 . I'm not going to be a put in whatever blank you want to

05:28 in there. What nurse, what you think? What do you what

05:32 you gonna be doctor? I'm not be a good doctor. Woe is

05:36 . I'm not gonna be able to this. I need to go to

05:38 school. All right. And you're do this emotional response. You're gonna

05:41 I can't do this and you're gonna to quit the class. That is

05:44 what you do. That. Drop . There is a good indicator to

05:47 get away from emotions and let's start about what's new needs to be done

05:52 how do we fix this and how we achieve our goals? All

05:55 We don't respond out of emotion. respond out of analysis. All

05:59 So the good news is you have long way to make those decisions.

06:02 right. I think that means you to take three exams in the class

06:06 figure out whether or not you should in the class, which is kinda

06:09 . Alright. Um If you need know how many of you gotta graduating

06:12 semester, no one put your hands . I'd be proud of that.

06:17 , there she is. Alright. . Good. Three of you.

06:21 . You can raise them back in back. I'm looking All right.

06:24 . All right. Did you know a future graduate of the university,

06:28 actually owe the university graduation fees? due on a certain date. Do

06:33 know what date they're due? I know. But the calendar will tell

06:38 . So you can use that search there. Academic calendar. I'll tell

06:42 right now, when your finals are before. So you can start making

06:45 plans of buying your tickets, yada yada. You can do all that

06:48 through the academic calendar. So that's easy one. Academic honesty. This

06:53 the basic um, rules. Don't . Don't cheat. Don't steal.

06:57 If you want to read the you can go to the undergraduate catalog

07:01 . This is your student handbook. has the whole big nine yards.

07:04 your what your rights are as students what the rights of the university are

07:08 how it all works out. All . So you do have rights.

07:12 one can just sit there and accuse of cheating and I'm taking your grade

07:14 kicking you out of the class. doesn't, that's not how it

07:17 Alright, So that lays it all . But please don't do it.

07:21 don't lie. Don't cheat. Don't . It's a bad habit to get

07:24 . And it will cost you, if you're going into medicine. Um

07:28 I think how many of you guys medicine in some way, shape or

07:31 ? Yeah, you wouldn't be in class if you if you weren't,

07:33 mean, how many are you taking class? Just cause it sounded like

07:37 . Oh man. I usually get . Alright, so the thing

07:42 is integrity is a huge deal in . All right. And so if

07:47 follow this pattern of doing any of things, it will become something that

07:50 do as a professional which will end costing you probably your license and or

07:56 job or both. All right. let's try to eliminate that now.

08:01 lastly, if you have accommodation Uh that's actually out of date.

08:06 called the dark center now, but you type that in it would take

08:08 straight to the dark center. Um university will provide accommodations. Um But

08:14 a long process for that to So if you need that, that's

08:19 you wanna go. It's called the center. Not csd, this just

08:22 you it's an old slide. Last semester for blackboard. Did you

08:28 know that? Alright. Yeah. going away next semester starting starting in

08:34 summer. It's gonna be canvas. if you went to high school or

08:37 to another university at canvas, that's we're gonna be adopting. This is

08:41 last semester blackboard because blackboard. Anyway, but this is where all

08:48 stuff is. So all the your syllabi policies, all slides that

08:52 gonna be for the class are going be released before class, about an

08:55 before class there become available. There's to all the homework assignments. There

09:00 you need. There's also links to video recordings. If you don't know

09:03 where all this stuff. It's not I like having wires. It's because

09:07 do record all the lectures, That's not an excuse not to show

09:11 . I know it's 8 30 in morning. It's hard. It's

09:14 It's dark. How many we got before the lights got up this

09:17 This sonny. Did that not Yeah, I mean I'm not a

09:21 person and I am here every day do this stuff. So Um basically

09:27 gonna be recording. So if you to go back and listen to lectures

09:30 fine. Also there's a history of lecturing. I've been doing this for

09:33 years so you can go back and to old lectures if you want

09:36 Um Also has a really really, bad grade book, which is one

09:41 the reasons I think blackboard sucks. So it's a place where your grades

09:45 be recorded. It's not a good to actually um do great calculations.

09:51 what you can do is you look the accuracy of the recording but you

09:54 really do the math there. So blackboard you should be able to log

10:01 and get all your stuff there. , so things that you actually care

10:04 , things that are important for the , um you need a champion

10:09 which is a digital textbook. If bought this last semester, you already

10:14 it, you do not need to it again. In fact, the

10:16 that top hat does is it actually it in two parts. Alright.

10:20 a classroom portion and then there's like textbook and without going into all the

10:25 why they do that. The classroom is, is the thing you need

10:29 be able to access the textbook. think once you buy the textbook it's

10:32 for life. So just make sure have a class and the textbook there

10:35 reading before every class, right? that is unappealing to you? I'm

10:40 , but that's how we learn. right, so you need to purchase

10:43 and you need to get it because first reading starts today and it becomes

10:48 becomes due on thursday. That's what gonna be talking about. We're gonna

10:51 talking about blood. Alright. Second we're gonna use is something from a

10:58 publisher. McGraw Hill's publisher. It's connect again if you took A.

11:02 P. One same thing we used last year and this is basically your

11:06 assignment. So you have homework that's to be in A. And

11:09 And you're gonna have homework that's gonna in connect. So collectively those two

11:13 are about $200 together. I'm not sure what the prices. I'm always

11:19 on that. But let me just of give you an overview of what

11:21 trying to accomplish here. All There is a way to learn to

11:26 you hold on information a lot better just sitting there and memorizing and

11:31 Okay. And basically boils down to , the more times you're exposed to

11:36 , the greater the chance you're going actually retain it, athletes know this

11:41 the more you practice something, the you become at it. Would you

11:45 with that athletes? Yeah. Alright. Musicians, you know this

11:49 more I practice my instrument, the I become at this. Would you

11:53 with this now? So I don't to practice anymore. I just I

11:59 have to will it into being I'll the best guitarist ever. Can you

12:05 me jamming up there? My wife me what I'm gonna do in retirement

12:10 you can learn to play the Said no, I'm already the best

12:13 guitarist in the world. You know air guitarist is? I forgot.

12:19 gotta warn you guys this is Sea . I'm Shamu and you're in the

12:26 zone. We will have conversations and will have to laugh at my

12:38 They're all dumb. The other one the backward. She's like, I'm

12:42 even looking over there anymore. So the idea is is that the

12:48 I'm exposed to something, the better am gonna become at it. It's

12:52 general thing. Alright. Video you guys play video games, nod

12:56 head. I see it, yeah, Okay. Call of Duty

13:03 right now. No one's gonna admit it. Not on the first day

13:07 class, no. All right, more you play the better you

13:13 All right. So we know this every aspect of our lives. But

13:17 think for some reason if we cram know the night before the exam

13:21 all the information and there's a lot it is gonna somehow stick in our

13:26 and it's not how it works. what we're gonna do is we're gonna

13:28 this the right way. The first we're gonna do is we're gonna prepare

13:31 before class. When I say prepare , that doesn't mean memorize everything and

13:35 to class prepared to take a full . That's not how this works,

13:38 ? The idea is just like on trip, you read a map before

13:41 go where you're gonna go to kind figure out how to get there.

13:44 that's what reading a textbook is. idea is you read through it,

13:47 a couple of simple questions and make you're actually paying attention and not just

13:50 through. And the idea is that exposing myself to some new information.

13:55 not gonna understand it. Maybe you , but I won't understand it

13:59 but that at least lets me come class. So when I get in

14:02 and start pointing out the important things , oh yeah, I remember

14:06 That's the second level of exposure. we come to class and we reinforce

14:11 . Now. There are people who , oh, I don't have to

14:14 up to class because dr when records material and I'm already going to read

14:17 and I'm gonna be doing homework and answer is is please don't do that

14:21 there's a reason for it. It's just because I think it's important for

14:24 to show up and waste all that coming into town or getting up early

14:27 anything like that, right? There something about um experiencing something like just

14:34 in this chair, you're going to stupid things that I do,

14:39 Because there's stairs here. I guarantee gonna fall once. Alright. I'm

14:44 older now. So it's gonna be dangerous fall. Right? And so

14:49 something about being in the classroom that you to experience it and retain information

14:54 than watching a video of me droning saying the exact same thing and we

15:00 it in grades and it's not just class, it's been shown throughout every

15:05 , every high school class who has done this. And the idea is

15:10 is something about attendance that correlates highly positive performance in the classroom. So

15:18 up, ask questions. Please ask . Don't be afraid. There's no

15:23 thing as a dumb question. And is the fun unit. Right?

15:26 mean, this is we get to about all sorts of stuff and you'll

15:28 to prove to yourself how stupid I because your stuff that I don't know

15:32 pathology. You'll ask me like, I have a friend who has this

15:36 heartbeat, what do I do and like, I don't know. I

15:40 All right. I'm not a All right. So the idea here

15:44 we're gonna learn those important ideas and these things that we're trying to internalize

15:49 help us better understand what it is we're trying to learn and finally,

15:52 we're gonna do the practice. So we've exposed ourselves the first time

15:56 kind of get a general sense. kind of focusing on the important ideas

15:59 the last thing we're gonna do is gonna practice those ideas we're going to

16:03 doing and this is what homework is . Alright, homework is not busy

16:07 to make you feel like you're doing alright. Homework is literally practice.

16:14 like okay, I'm playing the If I keep practicing it, I'm

16:20 it's gonna become motor memory and that's of what this is. Oh,

16:24 I see these words, when I this, this is what it

16:27 This is the relationship. And it also help you kind of see the

16:31 picture? It might open up your to an idea that was a little

16:36 confusing. So we do this practice a review to help you retain that

16:43 . And so every class is designed this, you're gonna read before

16:46 you're gonna come to class and you're practice after class and we do this

16:49 by day. All right, we it for 24 lectures and it's not

16:54 or horrible. All right. So are our homework assignments? Alright.

17:00 our assignments that we do out of ? All right. The first is

17:04 the top hat assignment. That's for of that textbook, that digital

17:08 Alright. So you're gonna have the portion. You have the textbook,

17:11 assignment comes through that and you can go directly through blackboard or you can

17:16 the book to access these. so you have a reading assignment.

17:20 when you open up this reading assignment the day, it's basically this is

17:23 I have to read. You don't to kind of figure out what it

17:25 . I've already cut out all this you don't need. So it's everything

17:28 already there. Alright, read that class. These will always open up

17:33 after class. So today, our lecture is Thursday. So at 10:00

17:38 our class ends, that assignment opens and you can start working on

17:42 All right, take you about an . So you have 48 hours to

17:45 of figure it out. And then the weekend you have longer you have

17:48 days to figure it out. All . They always close before class

17:52 Why do they open and close? , there's a couple of embedded simple

17:56 in them. And so that's just make sure that you're paying attention.

17:59 questions aren't hard and they're easy to the answers if you don't know

18:03 Then after class on top hat, get a series of open ended

18:10 These are what are called the lecture questions. The lecture review questions are

18:14 help you focus in on the ideas talked about in class. They'll do

18:18 like compare and contrast this, draw describe this, whatever that this

18:24 We want you to focus in on . And the idea here is to

18:27 you start seeing what is important about class because homework assignments don't really kind

18:32 outline for you. What are the pictures? I want you to focus

18:35 on the big pictures and start working the details. All right. And

18:40 once you can start doing that, doesn't matter which class you take your

18:43 you'll be looking for. What are big ideas and how what are the

18:46 that help me understand this? And what these types of homework problems are

18:51 . And there's not that many. like 6-8 per per thing. And

18:55 have until the exam period, you ? So whatever the exam is you

19:00 whenever they open up, you have the exam to get them complete.

19:03 it's not like you have to rush get them done. The idea here

19:06 these are the things that I'm gonna to help me study for the

19:11 All right. And then we have connect homeworks and these are the practice

19:16 all right. These are the ones allow you to kind of test your

19:20 to see if you're retaining stuff. . So that's that second thing that

19:23 purchasing. Alright. That's about 10% they again will open up right after

19:28 . So on thursday we'll talk about . So the homework and connect is

19:33 be about blood and they're gonna be , tell me what hemoglobin is,

19:38 is a red blood cell, blah blah. It's gonna be that type

19:40 stuff, right? And that opens and you have about 38 hours to

19:44 because they close always at midnight the after. So it's about 38 hours

19:49 do these things. And again, not gonna be a lot. Now

19:52 different structures in how we do All right. So you'll see

19:57 The homework will either be like a assignment or can be in multiple

20:01 And that's just because of the way the homework is set up. There's

20:04 be stuff that might be some anatomical where it's like when we look at

20:07 heart, you'll see a picture of heart. You get to dissect the

20:09 , you get to point to the parts that you're learning. So that's

20:12 different than say the last bit which more like a homework assignment that you're

20:17 accustomed to. But the idea is they're all equal and I'm not like

20:21 you 1000 problems. That's that's not the goal is here. All

20:25 The point here is I'm trying to you stuff to practice with. So

20:28 you can walk around with some walk , you know, head knowledge.

20:34 the three different types of assignments that gonna see in connect just to give

20:37 so you're not freaking out. One called the adaptive learning assignment. Those

20:40 the ones where it's like if you it wrong, it will keep asking

20:43 you start getting it right. All . You have the A.

20:47 R. Those are the anatomy ones it's like a dissection or it might

20:50 histology. Um And the last one the stuff that you're more used

20:58 And then lastly, we're gonna have orientation quiz. So all the things

21:01 talking about today is part of a of your homework grade. There's a

21:04 tiny quiz that says, hey did pay attention or did you fall asleep

21:08 just get that done by February You can go back and fix that

21:11 many times you want to until you a perfect score. Alright. So

21:15 me just kind of summarize here real . Look, I already stood on

21:18 stairs. That means there's a chance gonna fall All right, summarize real

21:26 . We have um Top hat We have top hat after lecture

21:34 Those do count for grades. Both those count for grades. They're 10%

21:39 your grade together. And then we the connect which can be broken down

21:43 different types of homeworks. But those after class assignments as well. All

21:49 . And all together, all that counts as 20% and then we have

21:53 which throws in and just it's just extra grade to kind of pump you

21:58 up and make sure you're not understanding . Now, I know some of

22:04 like to have questions to work with it's time to study for the

22:08 right? Reading notes bores you, it bore you reading notes for

22:14 Yeah. So we like to have problems. I want problem sets.

22:18 . So on top hat, there gonna be on the last day of

22:23 lecture right after the lecture is these questions will appear They do not

22:29 for points. They're just extra questions those of you who like to have

22:33 questions. You do not need to these. You can ignore them if

22:37 want to. All right. But there's a problem here they say do

22:40 see the word on there? It review. Alright. It's a review

22:44 . If you go look at I to change the name and I think

22:49 did but I just don't trust Sometimes I have here review. Don't

23:00 these two things. Alright. And really easy to tell apart. I'm

23:05 that this thing is acting weird. right, after the lecture review

23:10 When do they open up? I everyone to say When do they open

23:14 ? After what? After the After the lecture? And then they're

23:19 up for a long period of The extra review questions that you're looking

23:23 there only opened up after the unit done right before the test.

23:28 And they're they're just for practice. . I've had students granted first semester

23:35 . They're very confused. You're not semester freshman, you're now second semester

23:41 you are. All right. I think you'll get them confused but in

23:44 event that you do. Right? remember the ones that open up after

23:51 count for points. The ones that at the end of the unit.

23:54 not. Alright. These are the ones. Wind Spring break already figured

24:05 out. Middle of March. March Madness is going to be going

24:11 actually a week after I think. . You already got your plans figured

24:16 . Yeah cabo cabo. You can just get a bunch of friends pile

24:24 in the car and just head on to Mexico. It's it's like two

24:27 tanks. You know, everyone sleeps floors. You guys are not adventurous

24:34 is it just this early in the early. Okay. Yeah, I'll

24:40 you with tales of spring break another . All right. Anyway, there's

24:43 tests. You'll notice when they We have the first one in february

24:48 9th. Second one, the 2nd day of March. Then we

24:52 spring break wahoo and then March for , april 4th. And then the

24:57 exam is what would be the last of our class april 27th.

25:04 So each exam is exactly the 50 questions, 100 points. All

25:10 . There. Multiple guests. Multiple , whatever you wanna call them.

25:13 right. All administered at caSA. here knows. Well, I know

25:17 I'm I'm presuming I forget that we're to get new students in here for

25:21 who don't know casa is the testing . All right. And the way

25:25 it works is that you need to and sign up for your exam

25:30 You have about two weeks to do before the exam date. Alright?

25:35 is no class on those exam So, those four days you do

25:38 show up here, you need to take your test at Cossette whatever time

25:42 sign up for. All right, to that website and I'm gonna post

25:46 on blackboard to help you with some instructions. None of my tests are

25:51 . Alright. First unit is primarily the rest or the cardiovascular system.

25:56 then we kind of move away from and we do deal with respiratory system

26:01 the with the lymphatic system. Um so on. So, there's it's

26:05 be kind of bundled up in different . You're not gonna see these things

26:09 back and forth. And the last is we don't drop test.

26:12 if you don't do well on a there is plenty of other homeworks and

26:17 stuff to bring your score back But we don't get rid of the

26:20 test. So treat each exam you with the important set. It is

26:25 you spent a moment studying for you spent your time and would you

26:29 that your time is valuable? Your valuable? Yeah I don't want to

26:34 toss that out. Alright so treat as with the value that it

26:39 So how do you access all this ? Well it's on blackboard you go

26:42 to the left side, there's a menu thing that looks like this.

26:46 These little things just kind of show where you'll find this stuff. So

26:49 course info has those three things. has those three things and they're just

26:53 ways to access. Um There's even connect button that will take you directly

26:57 connect if you want to do that that's where you'll find everything. It's

27:02 it's literally a click away. Um start seeing these bright wear things.

27:06 is just a thing that the bookstore that you know what your books are

27:10 you can order them from them. I recommend just buying them directly from

27:13 publishers because it's cheaper. Usually there's markup. So what are your,

27:21 does your week look like? Well as you can see it's monday through

27:25 Tuesday. So today is Tuesday we a lecture presuming this was a real

27:30 you have read beforehand then after class when you have the next reading assignment

27:35 open up. That's when connect opens . That's when that lecture review assignment

27:39 open ended question review assignment opens up it stays open up until the night

27:45 the exam. You can see there's my next lecture. You can

27:48 my reading closes before the lecture. right after lecture, the new reading

27:53 up to the next class. I another homework assignment, that's only 38

27:57 and then the next review is opened for a long period of time.

28:01 you see on here represents something that getting a grade from. Well with

28:07 exception of the lecture. Alright so I'm earning a grade because there are

28:12 embedded in it. The connect I'm a grade. The lecture reviews that

28:18 opened up on top. Hat right class. I'm getting a grade from

28:22 . All right. And it just of shows you what the pattern

28:25 You'll be spending about 30 minutes to hour every day in this class working

28:30 this. Which is not much to for. I know I've said this

28:34 the MP one class but just so know how many credit hours um for

28:37 class. You know three. Do know where that number comes from?

28:44 like well it's the number of hours sit in the class. Right?

28:46 that makes sense. It's an hour a half long class meets twice a

28:49 and a half plus an hour That's three credit hours. Alright.

28:51 for every credit hour you take. is the presumption this is this is

28:56 in the United States for every for class, for every hour you spend

29:00 the classroom. There's an expectation of hours of out of class work.

29:04 if you think about that. Has of your academics ever done that?

29:09 , because it's kind of fallen by wayside. All right. But that's

29:12 expectation, You know, so 30 . That's nothing our that's nothing.

29:19 could be nine. So not a deal. All right. Now you

29:24 are concerned about how my grades are . So that's the math that I

29:28 to solve your um your grade and of you earn your grades last year

29:32 it felt like it but it's actually really not that bad. So just

29:36 top hat. That's the lectures of reading, the reviews. That's 10%

29:40 your final grade basically it's calculated. the total number of points that are

29:44 and the total points that you've So you take the urn divided by

29:48 possible and that's where you get the from. And top hat calculates that

29:53 . You can actually just go and the two numbers. Alright. It's

29:56 the top hat website and I just that into blackboard as is all

30:00 In terms of the connect It's basically average score from all 25 assignments.

30:05 there's 24 connect assignments and that orientation . That's 10%. And again,

30:11 can kind of look at it. could be points earned versus points that

30:15 possible. So I think it's something 600 per unit and off the top

30:21 my head. I can't think that's but it might be 2400 points but

30:24 the same sort of idea. And , four tests. Each of them

30:27 points take the average of all That's 80% of your. Great.

30:31 that's 10% plus 10% plus 80%. it looks like this. So it's

30:36 average of the exams, the average your top hat and your average of

30:39 connect. And that's the easiest way calculate it out. Now question usually

30:46 , Is there a curve in the ? Alright. Who took the class

30:49 semester? Was there a curve in class? Yeah. Should we have

30:54 one? No, I don't want curve. Let's all get A's A's

30:57 easier as I don't have to do . Right. Wouldn't that be easier

31:01 we all got A's What did I last semester? If we all got

31:05 what would he have say it A party. What kind of

31:10 A kegger? That's right now if underage, you're you're invited. But

31:16 not gonna you're responsible for yourselves. right. I've been here for 16

31:22 . I've offered this to every semester no one has taken me up on

31:26 . We all want as we all a party. You don't think I

31:32 . I have money set aside for . Yeah. And I got,

31:37 former postdoc works at ST Arnold's we'll good beer. And for those who

31:44 drink beer we'll get your root beer is not real beer but it's

31:48 Sugary. Alright. But normally we up with a curve. It's a

31:54 distribution. We don't do like what do in the english department like.

31:57 my highest grade is an 88. gets 12 points. That's not a

32:00 . That is making you feel We do statistics at the class.

32:04 do a normalized curve. That's the curve. We figure out where that

32:07 grade is. Okay that middle grade a is a middle of the sea

32:11 . We figure out where the Ds the bees are and figure out where

32:13 A. S. And the S. R. And we put

32:16 on that grade and that's how we the calculation to determine what the grade

32:19 . Alright, here's the fun Then after we figure all that

32:22 then we go back. Oh yeah extra credit. We take your extra

32:26 and then we add it back onto grade. We don't change the curve

32:29 that moves you on that curve on scale and then you walk away

32:35 Okay so there are extra credit there's gonna be one before each

32:40 In one after each exam it's basically really simple meta it asked asked

32:44 were you prepared for the exam and do you think you're gonna get?

32:48 the answer should be I was Hopefully that's your answer, I was

32:52 and these are the things that I'm with and this is great I think

32:54 gonna get and then afterwards you look your test and you're like you know

32:58 then you say, okay well why I make my mistakes? Hopefully you

33:01 make any mistakes. Hopefully like yeah did everything I expect I got the

33:04 I wanted, everything was perfect. if not it allows you to go

33:07 and ask yourself did I do what expected to do and if not what

33:12 the things I should do to change because if you keep doing the same

33:16 you're gonna get the same result. it asks you to start thinking about

33:21 performance. You do that as those assignments are eastwards 2.5 points each.

33:27 five points per exam. Alright that's a bad thing for like two minutes

33:34 your time. I'm going to self myself. Alright, easy mode.

33:39 so I think that covers everything, all my slides and I realize now

33:42 I'm looking at this like oh I this off this off this off this

33:45 but we'll see. Alright so it 908. I don't want to spend

33:49 20 minutes talking about everything but I gave you a whole bunch of information

33:54 I want to see are there any about the things that I just

33:57 Questions about the tests, Questions about . Yeah. Okay. So do

34:04 think it's possible to do well in course if you haven't taken and

34:08 The question is is it possible to well in the course we haven't taken

34:11 . M. P. One and answer is yes but all right here

34:15 but simple it's a small but right are words that we're going to use

34:19 we learned in A. M. . One primarily in that first unit

34:23 is kind of the let's get everybody the same page so we all speak

34:25 same language thing, right? But that it's it's it's all it's just

34:30 system, right? So when you the word for example, like when

34:34 talking about epithelium, you know if hadn't taken the class, epithelium is

34:39 that's a foreign word to me. who's taking A. And P.

34:41 goes, oh yeah I know what is and that's that's what we're talking

34:44 here. But jumping in feet first the blood is not well it's kind

34:50 gross and scary but but it's not . Alright. And what I think

34:55 gonna find for those of you took and P. One, this is

34:58 fun class. I mean, I'm I'm not like exaggerating that this is

35:02 stuff where you're like I wanted to into this field because of the stuff

35:06 gonna learn in this unit in a of weeks we're going to talk about

35:11 I think this is the fun part it's again well, what we're gonna

35:15 doing is we're dipping our toes in lot of stuff alright. But the

35:18 part is gonna be the immune It's been a long time since I

35:22 immune system and I'm gonna start opening eyes here. Alright? So hopefully

35:28 going to have fun with this All right. And then just so

35:31 know, my background is in reproductive . Alright. Human fist. People

35:37 this because I tell them on the day and it's the last stuff that

35:39 talked about both in A. And . Two and both in human

35:42 And that's where you're gonna see me into a little schoolboy where I get

35:45 giddy talking about stuff and I will down tangents and you'll be like,

35:50 attention Dr. Wayne. We have 30 minutes and you haven't gone

35:53 You just keep talking about all the that excites, you know.

35:56 So I just went off on a , but yes, you can do

36:00 in this class you can take A P. One and P. Two

36:03 the same time. You can take and P. Two before you take

36:05 and P. One. I know it's a prerequisite for a lot of

36:09 things. But the reason the order the way it is is because generally

36:14 most people have no background in the and so A. And P.

36:18 pre stacks with some Biology and some to help you understand moving things

36:23 Alright. So any other questions? . I do not know the answer

36:34 that. Alright. See first question that I don't know everything.

36:39 I don't know. But ask the I guess. Yeah. They're not

36:46 with knowledge up here says no. . Next we're not done guys.

36:50 mean remember what I said. There's parts today. What's the second

36:54 Learning how to study? Yes So if you purchase so when you

37:03 your purchase you made a purchase usually either the for for the classroom portion

37:09 from top hat or connect. You purchase usually for one semester to

37:13 So if you purchase for the full you don't have to do anything

37:17 All you do is just get use access code or click on the thing

37:21 it will it will sync up If you only purchase a semester last

37:27 you're gonna have to purchase the next . All right. And so it

37:30 depends on what you did. And they usually usually most people just click

37:34 the 11 year. So that's the semester thing and it's really not too

37:38 , it's actually a full year It's like from fall to fall.

37:42 you get a summer in there as . Right? Anything else I know

37:48 I'm talking to? A lot of have taken this class already so for

37:52 of you who haven't. Yes. There's no such thing as silly.

37:58 huh. Yes. So the way it's set up, so this is

38:05 true digital textbook. It actually is a web page you will be scrolling

38:09 it. There is no pdf, no flipping of pages. It is

38:13 scroll scroll till the end of the . But that's that's that's how it's

38:18 . Yeah. Yeah. I think last time I talked to them they

38:22 they're trying to drop the payment model it might be cheaper than what I

38:25 up there. But I could be you know I mean inflation all sorts

38:29 fun stuff going on right now. . Anyone else? No questions.

38:37 so let us deal very very quickly how to study now. Again for

38:42 you took a and p one you've this before. This is a

38:46 Alright if you've taken my human fizz this is a reminder of how to

38:52 now. I think I have the to teach you this for two

38:57 One because I like my time and know, saying the same thing over

39:01 over again, you know 300 times hard. But the other reason I

39:05 so is because I sat in your and I was the laziest student that

39:10 ever meet. No, I was was alright. I was um I

39:19 the type of students you hate. never studied for exams, right?

39:23 would roll into my exam with head and I'd go in there and I

39:27 B pluses. Alright. So am that students you hate? All

39:32 I went to school in New I went to school to line right

39:37 way we beat USC cotton ball. beautiful man. Sorry, it was

39:44 good day when you don't have a team. They're walking around two lane

39:49 semester all wearing t shirts that says school Because this is the first time

39:55 1998 that we've had a decent football . All right. At a long

40:01 . And I wasn't there. I there before then. So I I

40:04 up when there was no football It was awful, terrible, terrible

40:07 anyway. So what would I do class. What do you think?

40:14 to school in New Orleans? And was a Yeah you got she said

40:21 . Yeah, yeah, that was academic rigor. And just to give

40:26 a sense of house what what type student. So I lived in a

40:31 with seven other people. Uh, of us became professors, Two of

40:36 became physicians, one became an attorney one became a regional vice president for

40:41 multinational. And all we did was fun. So, I mean it's

40:48 . See there's redemption for everybody. right. Um, and we

40:53 We all took organic chemistry together. fact, I'm not going, I'll

40:57 you about organic chemistry another day. really the point here I'm trying to

41:01 I was a really, really lazy . I drove everybody absolutely bonkers.

41:06 , I drove my parents bonkers. drove my teachers bonkers. They'd asked

41:09 don't you study? Why don't you yourself? Have you ever had gotten

41:12 conversation from your parents? I love one. That's my favorite. Why

41:16 you apply yourself? I have an . Well, why should I work

41:19 hard if I can do this? , could be blessed in a bad

41:22 if I can do this. why would I want to work

41:25 really hard just to get a That's a little bit better. All

41:28 . But not being the top. puts limitations on what you can do

41:33 where you can go. All And so many of my friends and

41:38 all had aspirations from medicine because that's what you do when you're

41:41 right, become a doctor. That's true, but that's what everyone teaches

41:47 , right? Like you're smart, gonna become a physician. And and

41:51 truth is is you find your passion then just pursue it alright.

41:56 so I didn't go the route of . I got wait listed multiple places

42:02 in multiple rounds. Actually, I like number five at like two medical

42:07 in 22 different things. Looking at because she told me she's planning on

42:11 . And so you're now my best . All right, she's gonna be

42:14 sitting back there next week. Anyway, so eventually I got I

42:20 to grad school one year and I I got into all the grad school

42:23 , you know, I'm that kind personality and really that's where I really

42:27 belong. And I remember sitting in very first day and I actually,

42:30 taught high school for three years, I learned to be what it was

42:33 on the other side of the test a little while. It's like,

42:37 , it's very different. Now, can see what lazy students look

42:40 Now, I understand what it why, why all my teachers were

42:43 out their hair and doing all that fun stuff. So I got into

42:47 school and I remember sitting in on very first class of biochemistry biochemistry professor

42:53 in with a cup of coffee and is it all right, and he

42:58 waltzing in and he was one of favorite professors and he was actually on

43:02 of my committees as well. And him came in the ta who looked

43:08 and tired and they're wheeling in on cart all these stacks of papers and

43:12 like, okay, this must you know, our syllabus and our

43:15 assignments for the semester, because you buy books in graduate school, they

43:18 hand you stuff to read. And start handing these stacks and I really

43:23 not exaggerating when I say they're anywhere six and eight inches tall.

43:27 I think some semesters they say they're , but you know, I mean

43:29 about 6 to 8 inches tall and start handing them out to the 40

43:32 so students in the class and they this is what you're going to need

43:36 know for the first exam. And sitting there, you know, my

43:40 just immediately goes, oh, well can't take it anymore, so I

43:44 figure out how to study All right again, I told you I'm a

43:48 student, right? And I think social agenda having gone to school for

43:53 years at a party, it wasn't party school, but it was a

43:56 city in which a very good school actually located. And so I was

44:01 , oh, I've got to figure out. And having been a

44:04 I knew, okay, well, can't get away with this. And

44:07 what I started doing is I started back and looking back at what people

44:10 told me about how to study and said all right, well I'm gonna

44:14 this to what I'm doing here in school. All right now, first

44:19 , you don't have to study 24 a day. Alright, That is

44:24 the thing. So if you find studying all the time and you have

44:27 life, you're not studying. okay. What you're doing is you

44:32 are unfocused at what you're doing. you're you feel like you're working hard

44:37 you're really not alright. In what you're trying to do is you're

44:42 to become more efficient when you So what you have to do is

44:47 have to put limitations on yourself and have to know what it is.

44:49 trying to actually learn. All So when you study the goal is

44:55 not about time, it's about being time manager. Alright. It's figuring

45:01 what it is you want to do a very limited amount of time.

45:05 , what we're looking at in this graph and these two graphs up

45:08 Alright. It's something called the I've Wigger stuck in my head, but

45:14 not, it's somebody else's name and blanking right now, but it's called

45:17 forgetfulness curve and this is basically what says. it says, look if

45:20 given a piece of information over a of time, you're gonna forget that

45:26 . All right and we all know to be true. Um So like

45:30 example um what was the first day the exams for this class? Without

45:38 it up? Hi february 9th. right now some of you were like

45:45 do these people remember it? Because know you guys were listening and you're

45:48 embedding it in your brain going when's first day I got a you

45:50 panic and so some of you were that but some of you are like

45:53 have no idea what it was. you are on that curve and we

45:57 actually graph it out and figure out many people remember how many didn't and

46:00 time we'd see that fewer and fewer people would remember what that time

46:05 or that date is all right if this is true and it

46:09 it was actually ebbing House there. got the name Ebbing House forgetfulness

46:14 Alright, so the Ebbing House forgetfulness was, he came up with this

46:19 back in the late 18 hundreds and proved it over and over again And

46:24 what they found or what people have . Learning found is that if you

46:29 the forgetfulness pattern by reintroducing an idea ? The thing that you're trying to

46:34 what it can do, it brings back up to 100% of understanding whatever

46:39 thing is. And then the curve shape and on top of that,

46:44 only does the curve shape, shape change shape. Okay, that is

46:51 . All right. You can see . So here you can see it's

46:53 , very quick to forget, but I bring myself back up to

46:57 the rate at which I forget something slows down and I hold onto that

47:03 for a longer period of time. if I keep doing that over and

47:06 again, then what happens is I up retaining more information. So when

47:10 becomes time to study for an there's less for me to actually teach

47:14 . See what happens is if you till the last minute to study,

47:17 is what most of us used to or did or still do right.

47:21 some of us, what we're doing we're basically forgetting everything we just learned

47:25 we're basically taking the class all over the night before the exam and we're

47:29 own teacher and that's hard, It's not an easy thing to

47:34 And so what we wanna do is want to take advantage of what we

47:37 , know, why don't we just ourselves on a regular basis what it

47:42 that we need to learn and then won't forget everything and then when it

47:45 time to actually study, I just to prove to myself what I do

47:48 and then let me focus in on stuff that I don't know and that's

47:50 stuff I need to teach myself. that's really kind of the goal of

47:56 is to do this all right when you do this, what we're

48:00 do the way that we can accomplish is first we read the book.

48:04 ? So in that sense if I myself to the material by reading,

48:07 one way I can I can introduce when I come to class and and

48:12 , that's how I'm interrupting this And oh by the way, when

48:16 start reviewing and doing problem, that's third way. And so I'm doing

48:20 on a regular basis. So it this pattern of breaking up this forgetfulness

48:27 . Now the hard part is how I prevent myself from over studying or

48:32 Understudy is an easy thing. We've done that everybody studied for something you

48:36 in the test and it's just like have no idea where any of these

48:39 came from, right? It's am I even in the right

48:43 Yeah, I saw one smile. right. So that's that's a product

48:48 understudy, have you ever like studied study study study study study and you

48:52 and take the exam and it's just , are you kidding me? Here's

48:56 the right answer, you turn it perfect score And you're like, I

48:59 spent 48 hours no sleep studying for exam. And it was like candy

49:05 just simple. Alright. That's that's over study. Could you have spent

49:09 time better? What are some things you can do other than studying that

49:13 rather be doing sleeping? Alright. . I always hear the sleeping

49:17 I'd rather be sleeping. All Anyone here want a social life like

49:23 . A couple of people raising their . Yeah. Some are a little

49:25 . Is it okay? Say social in college? Yes. Yeah.

49:29 life right? You want to meet ? Have fun? Maybe you have

49:33 job. I want to earn some . Well if you're over studying,

49:38 take all those things away. So we gotta do, we gotta find

49:41 right balance between all that stuff and what you need to do is you

49:45 to know what it is you're actually . Alright. So part of the

49:50 that most students do when they study there like here's all this information.

49:53 don't have any way to understand what is. So I'm just gonna just

49:57 it and hopefully we'll all stick to . And the idea is no,

49:59 don't do that. What you wanna is you want to organize information.

50:02 the first step is I want to my time. So I'm I know

50:06 to do this and what I'm doing trying to accomplish in this smaller time

50:10 . And the second thing I'm trying do is I'm trying to organize my

50:14 . And what you'll do is if start paying attention away, classes are

50:18 . Is that the people who are for the most part, not always

50:22 we all have the crappy professor. , freshman year chemistry had a professor

50:27 who was a natural born german, he had a very, very thick

50:31 accent. He was ambidextrous and he shy. So when he taught,

50:36 faced this direction, he wrote and like this and everybody in the chemistry

50:44 in a classroom like this was are you kidding me? Because you

50:48 understand him. Couldn't see what he saying. He couldn't read what he's

50:50 . So we all sat on the in the hopes that we could somehow

50:54 around chemistry. All right. So you're gonna do is you're gonna

51:02 all right, here I am in and you're gonna listen, take your

51:05 and do all that stuff. But you need to do is you need

51:07 ask yourself, okay, what was learning today? That's what you should

51:11 when you walk out of every What was the goal of today's

51:14 So, I've already told you what's lecture about blood. So you need

51:18 know everything about blood that you possibly . So the idea is to start

51:21 at the slides and your notes and is there a pattern or organization to

51:27 ? Right. And so much of you might see as you might

51:30 oh the characteristics of blood? What blood? What are the characteristics,

51:34 are the components? You know what are the elements, what do these

51:39 have in them? And what you're do is you're looking at the big

51:42 and you're working your way down into details that help you understand what those

51:47 of the topic is that you're So the way you can pattern is

51:51 can think of it like this. have a whole bunch of topics,

51:53 classes roughly about 8 to 10 topics find out. And this is pretty

51:59 true for any hour and a half class. Right? It's like oh

52:02 big picture of blood. So there's to 10 topics underneath that umbrella of

52:08 . And then there's details to help understand those topics. And if you

52:12 them, you're gonna see it kind pops out like this. So there's

52:15 notes, here's my topics and when write it out it's like, oh

52:18 can outline it out if I had . All right. So the sub

52:23 got topic subtopic topics and you're gonna end up with with the facts down

52:28 . Now. If you ever get at least in this class, you

52:31 ask the question. What am I Generally speaking, we're learning anatomy and

52:35 . Anatomy are structures, physiology is . What do the structures do?

52:42 what are they? And what do do? And that actually kind of

52:45 things a little bit simple. It's , okay, well blood is made

52:48 of liquid and it's made up of and the liquid is water plus

52:52 And the solids are cells and All I got to ask the question

52:56 , what are the what are the , what do they do? Why

52:59 they there? Right. And those the physiology type questions that you'd get

53:04 of it? Yeah. So in terms, those topics are what we

53:14 learning objectives? Alright, so you'll sometimes people say what are the learning

53:19 ? If you buy textbooks? The that they look at the top of

53:23 at the textbooks, the very first in the chapter is usually here are

53:26 learning objectives. They're just telling you are the things you're supposed to be

53:29 ? What are the topics? that's what your idea is, identify

53:32 and then figure out why there are ? All right, Do you have

53:36 sibling, boy or girl boy? name than you looks different than

53:43 Could you explain the differences between the of you? Could you explain the

53:47 between the two of you? so I I use that as an

53:53 . So she has a brother who a different name, Why did your

53:59 name you differently? Yeah, you . Are you the same person?

54:04 , you're different people. We name in anatomy differently because they are different

54:10 . And so the first thing that do to identify two things that are

54:13 is to give them unique names. ? That's step. Number one is

54:17 what are the differences that make these things different. And then it's

54:21 well they're kind of related to each than what are the similarities.

54:24 that's one of the things that you use to help you identify and understand

54:29 . Alright, so those questions that gonna give you after class help you

54:34 do that. All right. as you move on upward through your

54:40 career, you're gonna have to start that on your own. But this

54:43 a freshman level class by definition. so that's why I do this for

54:47 to help you get into this practice if you're planning on a career in

54:52 or any of the other health care's fields, you're going to have piles

54:58 piles and piles of information. The lie that they tell everybody who's going

55:04 health care is that it's hard. not hard. It's just lots.

55:10 right. There's a difference between lots hard. Hard is trying to understand

55:14 Euclidean geometry. Lots is doing a worth of algebra problems in one

55:23 You see the difference, right? don't know non Euclidean geometry is don't

55:28 don't want to know. All So, when you're taking notes in

55:35 as I'm talking, don't be a . Alright. Don't write everything

55:41 I do listen, listen in on I'm trying to teach. You highlight

55:45 yourself, make notes about things that important things that I've pointed out

55:50 You circle things and put a note there. All right, you don't

55:54 to write everything because that's already in book. You've already seen that stuff

55:59 everything that comes out of my mouth important. Part of the stuff that

56:02 do is here to help you focus on something, right? When I

56:07 you a dumb joke, why do tell you the dumb joke? Because

56:10 joke is funny. It's easy to . Oh yeah, that was when

56:14 did that stupid joke and he made acid himself in class. That's gonna

56:18 a frequent theme in the course. right, write, write down things

56:24 help to explain what it is that trying to learn. All right,

56:30 you're studying or or or you copying notes for yourself or talking

56:35 don't write down things verbatim. Oftentimes easier to explain things to yourself.

56:40 your own language. Now, obviously Mp has its own language and you

56:44 have to start using it and adopt . But maybe while you're trying to

56:48 something yourself, it's like this is blank helps you to better understand

56:53 Alright so using your own language will you learn things a lot better now

56:58 things that I point out is use and pictures while you're taking notes that

57:02 speed up the time while you're preparing and studying for things right? An

57:08 saves you lots and lots of time effort. As an example, you

57:13 to the grocery store, do you full sentences for yourself to make your

57:16 of groceries? No because who cares verbs and now if you write down

57:24 word cheese, you know which cheese gonna get. Unless you have some

57:27 of special recipe where you have to a special note in which case then

57:30 kind of expand out. I need cheese or something like that. So

57:36 idea here is find ways to make studying efficient. I'm gonna pick on

57:41 ladies for a second here just because know I can um you don't have

57:46 use eight colors and neat handwriting to your notes. All right now the

57:54 I pick on the women to do because I've never seen a guy come

57:56 my office look at my beautiful notes the beautiful handwriting guys usually come in

58:01 go I have to take notes. it's it's a it's a different thing

58:06 you know if you if you want do that that's fine but understand that's

58:09 expand expand the time that you're spending your pretty notes. Who are just

58:15 whom who are your notes for? you turning them in? Did you

58:20 a grade for your notes? Who they for yourself? Right. So

58:26 long as you can understand your notes you need colors great. If you

58:30 with chicken scratch great. If you nice neat handwriting that's fine. But

58:35 is the name of the game right . Why do I say this?

58:39 when I was studying like I said was in biochem and I realized I

58:43 to spend some effort studying I was look I have a social life,

58:46 don't wanna give that up man. can I give up so I can

58:51 some room here to start studying I was a big fan of the

58:56 I still am but I haven't watched in years right? And Simpson's used

59:00 be on like Fox 26 or whatever in town. And there was two

59:05 back to back around you know right the news and I was like you

59:09 what, I don't have to watch those episodes. I'll just watch one

59:13 how I give and take. Right like so I have 30 minutes and

59:18 gonna use those 30 minutes to study if I can't get my studying done

59:22 30 minutes. Well oh well because not giving up my social type life

59:28 so that's what it is. I be like, I've got to be

59:30 , I'd go in there, boom boom boom boom boom. And then

59:33 minutes I could get all my studying . It was really kind of

59:36 Now, I'm not saying that you're be able to do that, but

59:38 idea is is kind of the same . If you're efficient, then you're

59:42 yourself time to do other stuff. I'd like to throw this slide up

59:47 because it speaks really well when you , do you find yourself being

59:51 Like if you're studying for a are you unfocused? Did you ever

59:55 yourself like staring at the ceiling, holes in the ceiling, pondering the

60:00 of the spider in the corner? ever see a dust mote on the

60:05 of your desk and wonder how far can blow it, you know,

60:10 a game of it. Next You know, you've got rules to

60:12 game that you're going to play for next two hours. All right,

60:16 unfocused. Alright. Example, I've and I try to hesitate using the

60:20 uh examples, but have you ever and found that the room was so

60:25 that you had to clean the Yeah. Right? So instead of

60:30 , you clean the bedroom, that's bad your procrastination is right and it's

60:36 okay, here's I'm doing the I'm doing this, you're not

60:40 right? What you're doing is you're other things to avoid the studying.

60:43 you focus in on the studying, gives you the freedom to do all

60:47 other stuff, The worst thing in world to do is to say that

60:50 sitting down to study and then you up cleaning up the whole house and

60:53 say you study for three hours, take the exam, fail it.

60:56 then you're like, I studied, don't know what happened. And the

61:02 is you didn't study, You clean bathroom. That is a terrible story

61:05 telling, explaining why you failed an . What's a better story? What's

61:13 ? My dog ate my nose. a terrible story. You want to

61:16 what a good story is. Me my buddies, we all piled in

61:19 car, we drove down to we partied all night. We got

61:22 here just in time to take my still failed it. But that's a

61:26 story, isn't it? Clean behind toilet. Partied in Mexico. Which

61:33 do you want to have as your story? Neither of them you want

61:37 pass your exams. But the point , if you're gonna fail a

61:40 you better go out in a blaze glory. All right? So,

61:45 you're gonna be unfocused, don't expect results, focus in and then you

61:51 free time to do the things that wanna do now. If if your

61:55 joy in life is to clean behind toilet after you step finish studying.

61:59 clean behind the toilet. All I can actually use this now.

62:09 . I'm gonna show you how you make notes. So, we're gonna

62:12 about the digestive system in this I think it's three lectures.

62:15 we spend a lot of time on digest. It's not that hard.

62:18 can put everything We need to know the digestive system on a single

62:22 even though it's gonna be three I'm gonna try really hard to do

62:25 for you guys. All right, , here's a pen. All

62:31 It's gonna be the brief thing. , the first thing, digestive

62:34 the beauty thing about the digestive It's one of several systems in the

62:38 that are tube systems. The tube is one that has a beginning and

62:41 ending. What's the beginning of a In our digestive system, mouth.

62:45 the end? The good. I'm you guys didn't snicker. I'm I'm

62:51 like a little kid. It's like about heinous. Right, Alright,

62:56 , what you do is you draw . Now, I'm gonna do it

62:59 like first off, when you draw in A and P. You do

63:03 need to be an artist. All . I am not an artist and

63:06 gonna prove it to you right See here, I'm gonna do this

63:08 such a way that the screen sit . So here is your mouth.

63:13 your esophagus goes into your stomach becomes small intestine. Small intestine becomes a

63:21 intestine, there's uranus right there. a genius. Wait, I forgot

63:28 have accessory glands to go with see we have a pancreas and then

63:33 this side we're gonna because we don't enough room on the other side.

63:35 going to draw the gallbladder and then gonna draw some big little liver there

63:42 . Like I said, now that look like our digestive system, but

63:46 it has everything there that I right? And so that note to

63:51 allows me to see everything that I to know. And then all I

63:53 do with this is I just go and I just start labeling things.

63:56 is what the mouth, blah, , blah, blah. That's what

63:58 esophagus does, blah, blah esophagus do a lot. The stomach does

64:03 of stuff is what small intestine does and tons and tons of stuff.

64:07 is large intestine do tons of this was the liver do their stuff,

64:10 know? So you draw a picture this, make it nice and

64:14 And then you can label that thing everything you need to know is already

64:18 there in that picture because you've summarized , you have a visual thing to

64:21 able to do that. And it all your key notes that you need

64:24 there? That's an example of how study, right? You go from

64:29 big picture. What is the digestive ? What are the parts and what

64:32 the parts do? And there you . All right, So when do

64:37 study? Like I said, it take very long to do anywhere between

64:40 minutes an hour. If you've never this way, it's gonna take you

64:43 . I'm not gonna pretend that all a sudden you're gonna all be super

64:47 geniuses. It takes time and practice like anything else. So the first

64:52 you do it it's gonna be How do you guys work out?

64:57 . How many started working out january , anybody? Did you make it

65:01 New Year's resolution? Okay. First you start working out, is it

65:07 ? First week you start working No, it's pretty painful. How

65:11 people quit after the first week Right. But if you can get

65:16 that initial pain then all of a now it just becomes part of your

65:20 uh regular schedule. That's what studying , It's gonna be painful just like

65:26 out. So what you're gonna do you're gonna find out, you're gonna

65:28 a little bit of extra time but it will speed up. Alright.

65:32 chance you want to do this based the Ellinghaus curve? It says I

65:35 to interrupt the forgetting cycle. The chance I get. So the first

65:39 I can do that is right after . How many guys don't have a

65:42 directly after this one. Guess what should be doing from 10 o'clock to

65:47 30. Writing out your notes, back take your notes and say,

65:52 , what was it I learned And then what you do is you

65:55 writing it out, rewriting, condensing notes down, take those 30 odd

66:00 with all your notes on them, it down to a page or

66:02 maybe three pages if you write big colorful. All right. And that's

66:07 be an opportunity for you to interrupt cycle then what you wanna do is

66:12 want to sit down and start doing assignments, make sure you start

66:16 did I get on my points? me go through these questions, can

66:19 answer them? And that's gonna allow to keep working through that cycle.

66:24 right. What you're really doing when rewrite your notes right after class is

66:29 actually preparing your notes to study for exam. All right. In other

66:34 , you're saying these are the things are important and this is the stuff

66:37 I need to learn and so when comes time to study for the

66:40 this is what I'm gonna do. so when you get to the point

66:42 it's time to study for the You don't go back to the big

66:45 stack of slides. How many classes we have before? The first

66:49 Anyone know six I heard it. right. six classes. Six classes

66:54 30 pages of slides. How many is that To many? It's

66:59 It's 180 roughly. Right. How would like to read 180 slides before

67:04 night before the exam? How many rather read? 12 to 15 pages

67:09 notes? Guess what same exact But this is easier. 12 to

67:15 . So if you condense everything down you're still remembering and it's still easy

67:20 you to understand. It's gonna be for you to study. And because

67:24 wrote it down, you know it's . It's not gonna be my

67:27 Which army writing notes to myself to me what I need to teach you

67:31 that you understand the subject matter. ? So you're now in charge of

67:36 it is that you're trying to So what you're gonna do is you're

67:39 get these notes, these 12 to pages notes you wrote and you know

67:42 in them. Gotta yada yada. take these notes and hide them from

67:47 . Turn them upside down, put over on the other desk, get

67:49 blank piece of paper and say, what did I learn in this

67:54 What was lecture one about? What lecture one about blood? Right.

67:59 . Everything you remember about blood. to. What was it about?

68:03 didn't talk about it. It's about heart. Right. You know,

68:06 just gonna keep writing everything out and write everything out. And what you're

68:09 do is after you've written everything you then you go back to your original

68:13 over here and you take those 12 15 pages. You do a comparison

68:18 you wrote down on the scratch notes matches the original notes is something you

68:24 , Pat yourself on the back. remembered something? That's good.

68:29 It's a positive. It means that's you retained. Which is what our

68:33 is. Our goal in this class not about grade. Our goal is

68:36 learn the information. Grades. Just reflection of what we learn. But

68:40 you're gonna find is that there's gonna a lot of stuff that you didn't

68:43 . Everything that you see on this of paper that didn't make it over

68:46 or make it over here wrong is you don't know. And you now

68:50 to make corrections. You need to yourself. You know how we punish

68:55 . We go by kind of nine . We beat ourselves. Right?

68:59 what we do is oh I have over here. I don't have it

69:02 . Let me write it out by it out. That's your punishment When

69:06 was in school, the teacher, you did anything wrong make you do

69:10 . You remember lines you guys ever lines which lines I will not

69:16 I will not blanket. You The worst is when they made it

69:18 100 times your hand is like a who had to do 1000 lines once

69:26 for chewing gum first had to spit gum out in the old lady's mouth

69:30 know. Um But you do that repeat this process over and over

69:36 So I'm gonna correct my notes. a break after I correct my

69:42 I'm gonna throw out my scratch hide originals and repeat the first time you

69:48 this. I guarantee you're gonna see you don't know a lot. You're

69:52 retain 10% maybe 20% of the But when you go back and repeat

69:56 cycle you're gonna show that you have the information better. You'll see a

70:02 retention next time. 50% retention next , 70% retention. And you're gonna

70:07 to a point where you can actually your slides or you're gonna see that

70:11 your your corrections your your scratch is like your original notes And you know

70:18 you stop studying that's when you stop , remember we talked about over and

70:26 remember that? When do I stop for a test? When should I

70:33 ? What do you think? You when I know the material right?

70:41 what's a test? Is it something judge you for the rest of your

70:45 to determine whether or not you're gonna good at whatever it is.

70:47 A test. Just ask the Did you learn the information?

70:52 And if you put more weight on than that, you're already doing something

70:56 , you are already putting too much and too much burden on on that

70:59 exam. All right. And it It's a little exam. All

71:04 So, what you do is you say, what do I stop

71:06 It's not when I'm tired. It's when I'm exhausted or I have to

71:10 show up for the exam. It's I when I know the information when

71:14 done showing myself that I know the I'm done. I can walk away

71:19 . Use your textbook. Use your just to help you fill in the

71:24 . If there's something that you missed the class, you can use that

71:27 help fill in the blanks of stuff you don't know. You can do

71:30 . Also with the video recordings that have. Don't go back and use

71:33 video recordings to study. Don't make . Let's for yourself. Those are

71:38 to waste your time. Now if think you have to try it a

71:41 bit, but don't make it the of your study studies should be reviewing

71:46 notes and ask yourself what was I supposed to learn and then focusing in

71:50 that in class. Don't be afraid ask questions. All right. You're

71:55 gonna look dumb. I know it like it sometimes, but I ask

71:59 question to me and I'm done. . If you knew this information,

72:02 you be in the classroom? Alright. So ask questions. I

72:08 get this. If I explain something way and you're like, man,

72:12 went right over my head. I get it. That's fine. I

72:15 mind explaining something a second time. . That's my job, is to

72:20 you understand it. All right. you don't understand, come and see

72:25 write or email me a question. question. Just email me is

72:29 is this true? You know, can answer those questions. Like,

72:31 you explain this cycle to me? like, no, no, you'll

72:33 to come in and we'll do All right. Now I do post

72:38 exams. I mean, they're not old exam questions I've thrown off

72:41 Other price exams, you can use that just shows you how I write

72:44 for exam. Most of you have A and p once you already know

72:47 I write exams, so you might want to avoid those. I don't

72:51 . But if you want to, going to be made available. They

72:53 they become available after the last lecture the last day of class. There's

73:00 lot of stuff here about what you do and what you shouldn't do,

73:03 just read attend the lectures. Pay , answer the questions. Do the

73:08 as your as their assigned. Don't till the last minute. If you

73:11 till last minute, you're gonna find behind and you're gonna be playing catch

73:15 . That's what all this stuff is you. Yeah. Okay. How

73:21 of you guys are nervous test How many are you nervous? Dr

73:25 test takers are the ones who took from me? All right.

73:29 taking multiple choice exams is a true question is that's that's that's really all

73:34 choice exams. It's creating a true to a question. Alright,

73:38 I think that's true false. How I make a true statement? All

73:41 . So, what you wanna do you're taking this is the last and

73:44 you guys can get out of here go to your next class. All

73:47 . Basically what the way it works you start with the first question

73:51 You work your way down and really you're doing is you're asking the

73:54 you're trying to come up with an without looking at the answers,

73:57 So, if you look at the , it says um you know the

74:02 of grass is green? You know mean? The color of the grass

74:05 blank. You'd be look, the is green. So you're looking for

74:08 answer. Green. I always use color of the sky because there's a

74:11 of variation in the color of the is the answer should be blue.

74:16 course it should be blue. And you just look through the answers and

74:18 you find blue, then you answer , you move on. If you

74:20 see blue move, just stay Don't because now we're dealing with higher

74:24 questions. So the idea is just through the questions all the way

74:28 answer the ones that you know at top of your head, avoid the

74:30 that you don't answer off the top your head. And what you're gonna

74:32 is you're gonna just keep cycling through questions until you get down to like

74:35 last two or three questions. All . And really what you're doing is

74:38 just looking for levels of difficulty answering questions first. The average I shoot

74:43 on an exam is 65. I that makes some people upset, but

74:48 the way things make it. So can do my nice distributions. So

74:52 that means is that the majority of test should be about 60% to 65%

74:58 7% of the question should be Let's get everybody here to 70%

75:04 All right. That means 25 to of the exam are going to be

75:08 tougher questions. So that's the good going into this and then what you're

75:12 is you're now working through those tougher so if you work them through that

75:18 of easy questions I can answer off top of my head. Ones that

75:21 me think to finally where I'm flipping coin, you're gonna be able to

75:25 the higher score, you're gonna have of time to answer the questions and

75:30 the hard part is going back and your exam and this is where most

75:34 freak out. The way you This is just look at the question

75:39 the answer you put down. If makes a true statement you've answered it

75:43 . Move on. If you answered question and the answer is incorrect then

75:48 made some sort of mistake along the and then you go back and look

75:51 at the other answers. But if read through all the answers you're gonna

75:56 a way to talk you out of right answer. So always focus question

76:00 the answer I put down when you're the exam you do that nine times

76:04 of 10 you're gonna be just Reading starts in about 15 minutes,

76:11 day of class thing. Oh just you know because we're in the add

76:16 period the first three assignments are gonna a hard deadline in thursday next week

76:23 read for tomorrow. Okay But if late that's okay. If you don't
