00:16 Mhm. Testing testing. Let's see treat, going to bed testing.

01:09 uh you guys hear him back there it back? All right cool.

01:17 this is uh the microbiology for non measures used to be called pre nursing

01:27 . Used to go by 13 53 that's uh no more. So for

01:35 year now we've changed and uh you to know this incredible care to notice

01:42 it's compliant now with all the area so so it's actually offered um at

01:50 Star abc et cetera. So people transfer in from those schools can become

01:58 and uh of course so I'm assuming are all assumed to be nurses or

02:06 major. I think that's required to this. Um I am doctor

02:14 I have been here probably forever. I've been teaching I started intro bio

02:24 . I've been here since cycle five I've been teaching microbiology which is trained

02:29 do. I worked in industry, worked uh various jobs industry before I

02:37 into uhh um But I have uh in microbiology in one form or another

02:45 40 years. So anyway um But thought this course since 2011 Anyway

02:56 I'm sure by now everybody's probably bleary and head spinning and everything else that

03:02 unlike the first week of school. uh so today is no content.

03:07 just think of this as the first of work and when you do the

03:10 day of work and find out where office is. Your office is at

03:13 bathroom exactly where the cafeteria is Right. So um more or less

03:19 today is I've already innovated you with . I said another one out three

03:25 in the last 10 days basically this the same thing in each email but

03:30 will change up starting next week. you can expect uh basically two Mondays

03:37 sure and either thursday or friday an is saying this is what's coming up

03:42 week uh recovering class. This is to do. This did not do

03:47 some quizzes this week but that kind stuff. So you'll see those regularly

03:53 reminds me I'm gonna hate myself but already aware of about five people you

04:01 take to which those e mails have back. Right so you're not

04:06 you have not gotten emails so do it out. Those emails are basically

04:11 kind of overview course type stuff. gonna do a little bit of that

04:16 and I'm kind of I'm not gonna a lot of time line but there's

04:20 still this will go through some Uh probably about 40 minutes or

04:25 Okay then we'll go but then Thursday start for reel. Okay? Um

04:31 you do have questions about of course have you certainly shout them out.

04:36 fine. Um but in terms of email thing so you want to make

04:40 you get emails from me. Um often the problems are because you tied

04:50 email accounts to one account so there be issues with that. So what

04:55 do is check with U. I. T. To solve the

04:59 . Okay Anyway so I'm over in 2 22 lab. That's that

05:08 Okay and on the second floor all way on the end um Office hours

05:15 be, I'm just gonna heat the officer but we also have the option

05:20 you want to place. That's fine . So both both will be uh

05:27 . Um If you can't make this I'm sure not I can't time that

05:32 accommodate everybody's schedule but so that's you you want to be not a

05:36 Just email and we'll set a time that's that is not an issue.

05:41 what do you want to do Or face to face? Right that's

05:44 fine. Okay the link to uh office hours is on blackboard and will

05:51 next week. So next monday Okay. Um Let's see.

06:00 Of course if you have the teams that should be on there as

06:03 Okay. Um Alright of course. if you're in here haven't enrolled yet

06:11 think there's openings. Um So add . Okay last I checked your openings

06:18 that should finish. You can add next monday lab is another thing.

06:23 labs are full, there was one one opening but they're all full which

06:31 every semester But um your chances of in at this point are highly unlikely

06:37 to be honest. Okay. Um can wait list a lab but you're

06:44 the hope that other people have you know get in and then you

06:48 in. That's not not likely. but it is offered every semester.

06:53 summer and fall summer is wide There's always spaces in the summer but

06:58 often spring as well. Just like do your best bet, just take

07:01 in the spring. Okay? Uh If you're not in lab and you're

07:09 to get the lab, just know this week there are no labs.

07:13 ? So you're not missing anything. if you're lucky one that does get

07:17 , you will not have missed So we started labs next week.

07:21 . Um Alright I just mentioned already email nothing notice that I've got students

07:30 four courses, right? So there's 23 20 which is this 1 21

07:37 Lab 21 23 21 which is the micro 21 24 email forwards of

07:46 So I don't want to have to you up and see which which of

07:51 . So you just put somewhere, never stop the subject that somewhere in

07:56 email that I'm in 23 20. . Whatever. Okay so do

08:03 Okay. Uh 48 hour roll uh monday to friday. I'm pretty good

08:11 getting back really quickly in emails. so I see a 48 hour rule

08:17 if you've waited that long for a , you can definitely assume it assume

08:24 didn't get through. Okay 48 hours response assume something is right, my

08:30 didn't get through. And then you as you come up during before after

08:35 time just to kind of tell me and go to U. H.

08:38 . T. Or something get it out. Uh should not distribution even

08:43 more than 24 hours less than that weekend. Not so timely but certainly

08:49 through Friday. Um God is I get that. It's that way

08:59 the university says you got to put bunch of different language in.

09:03 But this policy and that policy so has over the past three years especially

09:12 language in that relates to that so why it's so but I so long

09:19 I have a table of contents. sounds crazy but uh but that is

09:23 make it easier for you. So don't have a particular uh subject area

09:28 want more information on, go here then go to the right page.

09:33 so you are responsible for knowing what's here. Okay So if you have

09:40 absolutely not sure what the protocol go to. Okay um so the

09:49 so black board is where your course are gonna be okay whether it's videos

09:57 everything you are seeing up here and recorded lecture and uh building uploaded.

10:06 have access to it the latest next if not the evening of post.

10:15 I the it's here. Um Yeah in here is only the labor will

10:26 you to a U. H. called Video points. If anybody's familiar

10:33 that you can change it. I videos there because they have this software

10:40 takes the video and then partitions into sections like they call it indexing.

10:46 ? And you can search those You know, you might not see

10:50 families want to see a car. can you can check out the index

10:53 see where you want to go to . I think you can also do

10:57 service if you want. So it applies to streamline the secrets of stuff

11:01 want to see. Okay. So that's why I posted on that

11:05 Okay. But because that process they to do to do that take a

11:12 bit of time. So it may be. So once I upload it

11:15 a little bit of time to get have to do that. And then

11:18 can you can have full access to those those features. Okay. Anyway

11:25 again point here is the look look at the blackboard site, see where

11:30 at right open folder, see what's and what's not okay. You have

11:35 you need for unit one. Um we need to each unit folders organized

11:41 this will happen though, so we'll a review sheet for the okay,

11:46 just look exactly right yourself and not is yet available like or become available

11:54 week but again just yourself is what's there. Okay um All right now

12:03 mastering Microbiology, so this is part the Great, basically it's kind of

12:06 homework online platform maintained by the Republic uh you can have but they also

12:16 on mastering way to go to the site. Okay you can of course

12:22 the assignments that are there but you have access to this other material

12:29 Um which is called the study area think. So you click on a

12:32 area it takes this this is all option. I'm just pointing it out

12:36 you as a as a resource if want to look at it. Certainly

12:40 don't have but it's just an additional if you want that. Okay,

12:45 here is for great. Okay, only thing is for great is the

12:51 mastering assignments. Okay and so again to blackboard and you'll see the mastering

13:01 there's like I think uh you have punch in to register so just consult

13:08 filter will have the information that you . Okay um Okay, great

13:15 So um so for exams we can homework um uh exam so you are

13:26 familiar with caSA testing center, there's different sites uh you're examining will be

13:33 of these that can change from exam exam. So be aware of

13:37 Um Main thing is just go to casa website yourself. Then you can

13:43 up for a time slot um time called caSA schedule where you actually physically

13:51 yourself in a time slot. Those two weeks before an exam,

13:58 Uh And then it will tell you I'll tell you here as well and

14:03 gonna open so you'll have a heads . Um And there's multiple times and

14:08 occur over two days. Um Multiple slots. Typically, I don't know

14:14 those can change. I think this organizes all that. And so but

14:19 will be multiple time slots to choose on two different days. Okay.

14:24 Alright. The and so the Costa that walk around. So it is

14:32 type of exam. The black quizzes not, black quizzes are not like

14:38 online property thing. Uh With the , it doesn't use any of

14:45 right? You can literally have a in front of your quiz if you

14:49 to friends over, Right? So no restrictions on that note books,

14:55 we want to take it up to . Um Black quizzes are all those

15:02 many of those are all the exam . So I can give you a

15:05 for that um Weekly quizzes basically cover we talked about during that week and

15:13 unit courses cover are more comprehensive kind like a review of that particular previous

15:20 weeks or so material. Okay. so that's no longer the more time

15:25 those. The uh and so you 54 day monday friday through monday open

15:34 friday and have the next 44 days do this. Okay. Through monday

15:40 11:59 p.m. Okay? So in the for homework homework you have upwards of

15:48 weeks to to expand to do these assignments on mastering. So you have

15:54 of time to complete these science in . Um The extra credit so that

16:04 couple opportunities there one comes from just at a course evaluation, one for

16:09 time to attendance which I'll talk about a second here. So the

16:15 Uh again that's part of the from maintained textbook publisher. Uh in terms

16:22 the book you can get 13 conditions current position. Um but it's been

16:27 for a few years now so you get used relatively to you, you

16:33 get the 12 admission is fine. can understand the radius prices of textbooks

16:40 get to the book. Okay. you have to make sure you have

16:45 access to mastering so that you can those assignments. Okay? I do

16:51 either would like to have a a resource reference. Okay I think

16:56 a good idea but certainly he doesn't the value option there. Okay?

17:04 So attendance, attendance is through uh may be familiar with clickers on

17:11 Lots of classes around you h use um one thing you may see that's

17:17 is used to be called turning point I guess that was bought out by

17:22 else but now it's called point So uh again here the cheapest option

17:34 the uh download the mobile app and use. Okay and uh what do

17:43 call? You get a license or a license? If you have one

17:46 a semester just check to make sure still valid. Okay you need to

17:52 it. So in terms of what worth. So uh Also attend so

17:59 attendance policy so that means um basically class days. Right? So just

18:06 have to attend 18 to fill So you've got seven days right?

18:14 are built in for whatever actions may . Whether it's sickness. What I

18:20 even need to know right so that's fine. You're covered by those

18:26 Seven days that you can use for actions okay? Uh you you'll never

18:33 you should never be behind the content cover because everything's recorded, right?

18:38 you always have that to fall back if you uh this class okay?

18:45 But once if you do happen to seven days which hasn't happened to me

18:51 if it does for some reason and reaching like use it up seven days

18:55 you're on the eighth day then you then then you'll have to have a

19:01 excuse to not have account. But never seen anybody use up really that

19:06 days. So anyway what happens and we'll deal with it. Okay?

19:12 Alright quicker is recommended that you usually the mobile app but if you have

19:17 handle quicker for a semester. No . That's fine. Okay. Also

19:23 that for the mobile app users always . It will typically be on the

19:31 right hand corner but you want to in the session I. D.

19:35 also prompts you I think for a I. D. I. I

19:38 worry about that. Just make sure put in the session I.

19:42 As long as you have registered your and you do it again if your

19:47 turning point registration link registered through there as long as you have that completed

19:55 don't think you need to worry about user I. D. When this

19:58 you for during a question. Okay remember putting in the 2nd 90 which

20:04 will be different. Every class. uh If you have any pictures that

20:09 always the same. So the handheld is 41 is the challenge always.

20:15 but from all that that number Okay. Um All right. The

20:24 don't have one kind of mention Okay Again, every time we're talking

20:29 you get more details. Okay, paper submissions, so I can't imagine

20:37 creating your cell phone. Okay? if you do with the backup could

20:42 a laptop. You can do you use your laptop has the uh as

20:46 going to respond through through uh using , but it has to be it

20:52 to be through one of those either handheld or they have not paper

20:58 paper submissions and just make sure you your um so flip classes, uh

21:11 of the kind of break up the . Okay, Do things a little

21:15 . One of those involved basically kind puts the burden on you to prepare

21:22 of time, which you should do . But for these days there will

21:26 a prerecorded lecture okay? That you that will cover the material. So

21:34 this is your so for these days kind of responsible for the best you

21:39 , you know, mastering the Okay. Class session will be about

21:45 lots of clicker questions if you have all the time. But it's gonna

21:49 even more here. And we kind build a discussion of that topic around

21:55 clicker questions and your answers and the . And so uh the class days

22:01 typically I kind of the topics I for those are ones which historically students

22:09 of problems with. So I figured it's those are good ones to do

22:13 with. So you have lots of and forth and and answering questions and

22:17 . Um and in one of those of those problematic areas, Chapter

22:23 which is metabolism, which oftentimes can to the exits and pulling their hair

22:29 . Okay. When you have I think it's lots of chemistry,

22:32 it is, but I don't do subject. I don't, I don't

22:38 , we obviously have to talk about , but I don't go hard

22:41 Okay. So anyway, so these kind of topics we try to cover

22:45 these flip class things are subjects that be problematic. Okay. Um so

22:54 no extra. Great. Just kind way to in a different way.

22:58 things up a little bit. Um Alright. Okay. So um

23:09 week, the kind of these backs the restrictions, however, I haven't

23:16 that you have aged policy has changed because of that. That so we're

23:21 gonna go, this is the most just got from the website. What

23:27 gonna do basically the sick you do positive. Don't come to class if

23:33 um are experiencing symptoms. Don't come class. Okay. Contact with somebody

23:39 tested positive. Built in the Okay. Remember we have those built

23:43 seven days that can cover this. . If that happens to you.

23:48 . But I do like with any of absence. Uh just provide

23:56 Okay of of a positive test or . The excuse maybe. Okay.

24:04 So talking about miss missed exam for , so whether it's an accident or

24:11 or what have you just or if know ahead of time latest exam let

24:17 know. So communications keep prompt communication you know something's gonna happen or something

24:23 happened as soon as you can let know. Don't do not wait a

24:27 or two weeks later. Okay so communicate, keep me updated on what's

24:33 on and have documentation alright. Which be uh doctor's note can be um

24:43 invoice from a from a tow truck can be a police or whatever.

24:48 if you're in an accident okay just documentation and then a report promptly and

24:55 figure something out in terms of making up. Um The quizzes and smart

25:03 . I mean those are things we a lot of time to do.

25:05 . So don't I would say don't till the last minute to do those

25:09 but again reasonable um excuse will will go through with you or work out

25:20 with you. Um Excuse the absence that's just right out of you wage

25:25 . You can find that on page the film this at the end of

25:28 syllabus um british posted um Do you a week to challenge it for some

25:41 of problem with that. Covid exam . So again it's just uh just

25:47 me by documentation and I'll work with on rescheduling that uh policy. So

25:54 know casa there's progress to go around and monitor so any kind of incidents

26:00 occurs and it's written up and I notified. I really have any issues

26:06 the years with the african pasta but know it's just don't do anything even

26:13 maybe appear to be cheating. So there will be any issues.

26:21 Any questions, anything policy, anything Alright so this course about this this

26:34 you broke me down in the four each exam. So for example each

26:41 one year, the there is no exams in the sense of being a

26:46 test at the end. There's not each covering you. Okay you have

26:53 the materials you need for the first . Okay so the first basically here's

26:58 what microbes are, here's um here's future is going to find them classify

27:04 . Here's their structure, here's how metabolized. Here's how they grow.

27:10 kind of you know what Uh being you know since uh the the emphasis

27:19 a little bit more out here in core is compared to 23,

27:23 21. This one's more tend to more medical emphasis to it. OK

27:31 uh we really covered that second half three and four and two is uh

27:38 to control microbial growth. So it's disinfection etcetera. A little bit of

27:44 genetics and viruses. Okay classifying microbes three or four is really what we

27:50 is pretty much aspect of critical medical . So how the body fights disease

27:57 overcome those defenses. Disease uh uh drugs, vaccines. And there's

28:08 section here on vaccines. Well, put it on this list but and

28:12 begin with looking at a selection of infectious diseases. So what what are

28:19 break it down by disease? What it? What are with the disease

28:25 that occurs? And so so it's on that in the last unit.

28:32 . Um So the thing about this is pretty much focused on precarious and

28:43 . Okay. We look at eukaryotic uh really only in the purposes.

28:52 , so this isn't of course where delve into eukaryotic cells and all their

28:57 things. Okay uh We're more focused pro trios and viruses. Right?

29:03 So because all your other courses you are pretty much focused on eukaryotic

29:08 Okay so we kind of do a different in here. Ok. Um

29:15 . Alright, so quicker practice. let's talk a little bit about uh

29:20 let's see if you have your mobile or handle clicker. Um Let's look

29:26 this question. This is just for . So september one is gonna count

29:30 real. So you got you got for you to get that in

29:35 Uh So here is a question. I this is you I have a

29:41 grade. I must make in this . My life depends on it.

29:47 . I need this grade in order graduate stay information scholarship. Get into

29:53 school, What have you? So this apply to you or does this

29:58 a party in the bottom there? least one and 14 semester versus week

30:06 . There's a point to me putting up there. Yeah. Alright.

30:22 few pickers out there. Okay. that's um see what we got.

30:31 . Well, I figured that. . So So the point according to

30:37 of the Sinister Verse 15, when most people really want my help?

30:44 or just 1 to 14? 15. Yeah. They need to

30:53 . Not in the past. Please me 100 points five past. Of

30:59 That that doesn't happen. All But let me help you when I

31:05 . Which is weeks one through Okay. Um get help if you

31:11 . And that's what I'm here Okay. So in terms of some

31:16 of segue into studying. Okay. you know, faculty, they've been

31:24 here for a while like me various good and bad. I'm sure.

31:31 . And how to pay for the and this and that. So I

31:36 learning here, you know, filter take with a grain of salt because

31:42 not. You don't know how you stuff. Okay. But um you

31:48 , at minimum you should uh, know, Elektra notes that are on

31:54 attribution is already on blackboard. don't try to memorize everything honestly.

32:01 most of memorization is really in the , the very last when you're doing

32:04 infectious diseases, a lot of that kind of extra memorization. But you

32:09 , don't try to memorize everything. impossible task. And the goal is

32:15 to understand the concept of flying Okay. So before you come to

32:22 at minimum, read through the um, looked at Elektra notes,

32:28 kind of in your head. Can kind of piece together what's kinda going

32:32 be going on when you're in Of course ask questions um constantly throughout

32:39 whole process, throughout the whole ask, ask this, ask yourself

32:44 . Okay. And the answer to question I promise you is not Well

32:49 read that book, I go to lecture notes. I don't know.

32:54 don't, not necessarily right. We a way to a device to kind

33:00 assess that. And to be frank be honest, you can make hundreds

33:06 all the blackboard quizzes. You can hundreds of smartness on all the mastering

33:10 . It doesn't mean you're gonna make on the exam. Okay.

33:15 um, so what you need is way to really assess what you

33:21 Okay, so of course, part the mix obvious is coming to

33:25 uh download the notes, you're back with you add to it as you're

33:30 here after class electric videos available. may not need to see the whole

33:36 . There's parts use that indexing rewind something um Office hours in the

33:44 hours ask questions. You know it's repetitive process is not just doing one

33:49 . Typically have to go back and stuff. Um And so the goal

33:54 kinda to synthesize information in your own . Okay um The this concept mapping

34:05 call it putting the information you know a form to really assess how much

34:12 know? Okay so can come in because they can get their like bullet

34:18 of for example is something like um talk about that in chapter five or

34:31 . So if you've gone through that and you study it you think,

34:35 another stuff you've you've you've come to you video lecture, you've done whatever

34:41 is you do you think you're pretty upon it then simply write down your

34:47 . Okay and then you proceed to here's your assessment. You're gonna put

34:53 money where your mouth is right? been saying I know this stuff so

34:57 take paper pencil, that's it, ? Nothing else around you. Okay

35:03 you go okay what doing this? make sure the worlds require, you

35:09 a growth medium. Okay what do know about growth media feel they need

35:17 to have supply carbon 100 C. . O. M. P.

35:22 . What else? Well, there's media, there's um differential media.

35:30 else is there about growth? Uh me think. Well, there's a

35:33 curve, right? Uh So number time they look like this like

35:44 Something like that, Right? This lack, phase, log etcetera

35:49 What's log face? What does that ? What does, what does this

35:53 ? Uh et cetera. And so can go off and of course many

35:56 different arrows and this this way and way, how much it's fleshed out

36:03 directly based on what's in your dome . Alright, you study what you

36:09 know you uh Okay, so so you can get a more direct answer

36:21 to what you know about here, it'll be somewhere between 50 200%.

36:29 , you need to know where you're , where you're at in that

36:33 right? And you may have to repeating. Okay, try it

36:38 Right. Then you're very likely that percentage will go up, right?

36:43 then your point where you feel very . Okay, you go on to

36:48 next one. Take another talk. do this piecemeal as you're going through

36:52 semester. Okay. And a little at a time. Right? Take

36:57 of those things from examined view Maybe two or three of those.

37:00 then do it, do you use method now? Direct flag occurs if

37:06 happens? Oops, not yet. um If we do this. Um
