00:06 testing testing. Okay folks, everybody me back there. Cool, Alright

00:13 to Biology 23 21. I keep myself of that. I used to

00:20 33 32 which is the only number known for 15 years. So um

00:25 so this is a microbiology for science is the new kind. Um So

00:36 there's no content, so today's I've emailed you a couple of times.

00:42 an email will be a constant consistent thing I'll do uh typically uh

00:49 and Thursdays of the emails from me are basically reminders, this is what's

00:54 up this week. This is uh , there's like a blackboard quiz every

00:58 . Um uh smart work homework sometimes what we do one certain week.

01:05 these reminders about that coming exams so you'll get a lot of communication from

01:10 Twice uh sometimes maybe three times a um depending on what's going on.

01:17 so basically uh in those emails, mean there was a lengthy email I

01:23 I texted some of this to so that was on nine January, so

01:29 than a week ago, so I'm um you've already looked at all that

01:34 . Okay, so the purpose of is really just kind of, I

01:37 know for you, maybe it's here's where sec one hundred's at.

01:41 , this is how many people showed to pass today and but there are

01:45 couple of things that you want to out. So the first, so

01:48 not gonna be in here for the hour and 20 minutes and maybe 30

01:51 40 minutes or so and then we'll thursday we'll begin content which will be

01:57 one. Okay so um so and is kind of if you brought your

02:04 kind of practice for that as well the end. Um So I'll quickly

02:12 through the brand use if you've gone the material of syllabus and you look

02:16 the flat board, this is just be more of a or that.

02:23 but I'm not going to spend a of time on it. Okay?

02:27 So just start, I'm just I didn't introduce myself, I'm doctor

02:32 . Okay so this is uh I've teaching this course for quite a while

02:37 um And uh the my last semester back to face to face kind of

02:50 uh and more of that the semester in the attendance policy which is one

02:55 the things I want to kind of a little bit of time on if

02:57 have questions about. Um And then it's that and kind of the how

03:03 study for the course park, that's of gonna spend probably the most

03:07 Okay so um you can find me an STL building so if you're in

03:14 and if that lab is an STL , that's why I'm at um you

03:19 off the cyrus stick team so our which approach is a good thing so

03:25 we're still in a pandemic for Um So I'm still gonna keep office

03:31 just as virtual. Okay. I set up yet. I'll do that

03:36 a link. So I'm gonna do go to blackboard or if you have

03:39 app, which I'm sure you all , you can just access it through

03:43 . Um We'll be officers. And so that's Tuesday thursday 11 30

03:48 12 30 but obviously that won't accommodate . So if you want to meet

03:54 those hours and days, that's Just email me and we can

03:59 Okay then I'll just send you a for meeting info. Okay. So

04:04 that's not a problem. Um And the course, so if you're in

04:09 and you haven't added hoping that of , um it's full as, I'm

04:15 you know, your only options are waitlist if you're not already doing that

04:20 you'll be added automatically if you give enough slots. Um Close section

04:25 So that's that's not a guarantee. there is more leeway with, with

04:32 electric course that than with a So our labs, all bio labs

04:38 strict capped at 24 people and they waver on that. So if it's

04:43 labs full you're out of luck, fortunately labs are offered every semester spring

04:48 and fall. So thinking to a this semester, you'll have the chance

04:53 the summer if you want summer is not ever an issue with enrollment.

04:58 , um, And you can do ad thing until the 25th. So

05:02 week from the day when that option out, just mentioned labs, you

05:06 , some people still think that you to have a lecturer and laugh

05:10 You don't, okay. You have do what you can't do is take

05:16 lab without having had this course Right? But you can take lecture

05:23 lab. That's not, that's not problem. And that's often the case

05:26 you don't have enough labs to accommodate the people taking lecture course.

05:30 so, so taking notice not it's fine. Okay. Um,

05:36 you do have to have this course for this before taking lab or taken

05:42 . Okay. So let's say last already in the summer. So as

05:46 . So you have that, again, it's lasted 41 and roll

05:52 the same process. Wait list. section request form, um,

05:58 So as mentioned at the very I communicate with you a lot.

06:02 make sure people have your emails all of linked right to there to a

06:08 account, whether it's a gmail or you. Okay. But there could

06:12 issues with that. So if you're me and you haven't gotten a response

06:19 or I've mentioned in class when I you. Okay. And you haven't

06:23 anything then, uh, either coming half the class, you see me

06:28 person. So either in person or office hours right? Because clearly something

06:33 to be fixed. Right? So that you just go to U.

06:37 . I. T. That help that. Okay? But the bottom

06:40 is make sure you're getting emails. know if I if I email every

06:45 and thursday you're not saying anything Then that's a red flag that something is

06:48 right? Okay. Um if you email me, make sure to put

06:54 21 somewhere in that header even better to put also monday Wednesday or Tuesday

07:03 . So because I don't have to hunt up, you know what class

07:06 you in? Which one are you ? Are you in the lab or

07:09 ? So just that makes it easier me to answer any questions you have

07:15 48 hour rule. That's that. If I answer pretty quick usually during

07:22 week right? Weekend is not so right? But during the week monday

07:26 friday. I'm usually pretty quick by . Um Unless something's come up or

07:32 have you but certainly Within 24 But if it goes 48 hours and

07:37 email me your within 48 hours, it didn't get through and then you

07:43 then you need to do the okay called your email Then you can contact

07:49 through office hours or I could pass whatever just get it fixed. So

07:54 hours, you know, you email I have responded that something is definitely

07:58 . Okay. And just assume it get through and fix it. Do

08:04 message. The only only, that's only communicate through you.

08:08 Okay. Not through teams, not black boards have sent all through your

08:15 um, gmail. Okay. okay. Syllabus is long as I'm

08:20 you uh, no, by now when I sent as an attachment.

08:26 , um, it's wrong. It's for a number of reasons. One

08:30 the main ones is, uhh, us the fact that need to include

08:35 language on a number of things, now with the pandemic that's been going

08:40 for seems like forever. Um, long for that reason. But it's

08:45 long because I want to make sure almost any question you may have about

08:50 course, whether its policy for this that their grades or what have

08:55 It's in there. Okay. So kind of, you have a specific

09:01 about certain areas. Just look at table of contents and then just go

09:04 that page. Alright. That should your question. Right. Um,

09:11 see. I mean you really should familiar with the, of course,

09:17 they have the makeup policies for whether exams or homework would have you be

09:22 with those. Um anyway, the board. So if you have no

09:31 . I mean you have any kind glanced at blackboard, look through the

09:35 thing, click on every folder and and see where stuff is that.

09:39 a lot of stuff there. There's also never an excuse. Remember

09:45 the value excuse to say, oh didn't know we had an exam this

09:48 that day or I didn't know we a lot of quizzes there that

09:51 I didn't know homework will do this that because I have the actual schedules

09:57 big on the folder which contains those . Okay. There's also the syllabus

10:02 have, I have due dates and for everything in multiple formats in multiple

10:08 . You cannot possibly know when something due or when something's coming up.

10:13 just can't just click on blackboard. right, bamm From your eye

10:16 Okay. So um just and I these things consistent. So Blackbeard

10:24 thursday through sunday right there available um so now it's every week, so

10:30 know, so that makes it less you'll forget it. Okay, so

10:35 scheduling and dictates and things are posted in bible. Okay. There's no

10:39 not to know when something's do. , but look through the whole

10:44 Right. The other thing is for few semesters now I have another

10:51 So you look on the, you to blackboard and you look at the

10:56 below the main one. So this says textbook smart work resources, that

11:01 of an integration of some of the stuff with of course and it's only

11:05 that in that um when you click that link, okay, It's not

11:12 here. Just four grade other than will find the smart work link,

11:18 can click on that and take you the whole world, click ok?

11:22 but other than that it's like I arrangement folders like this you see here

11:28 each chapter in each folder has like little learning objectives like flashcards if that's

11:35 thing. E topics, animations. it's just a resource. All this

11:42 quizzes in there. Okay, none that stuff's for great. Okay,

11:46 that's fourth grade is what's this isn't great components for the course and we'll

11:50 over that. Okay. But but one here is the main that here

11:57 the main link to the stuff right the sports. Okay, this is

12:01 extra. Right? You don't even to click on it if you don't

12:04 to but it's there, you just some extra stuff. Okay um let's

12:11 . Alright, Okay, structural so is no formal online. Okay.

12:18 but having said that, okay, material here, what you're right now

12:25 recording what you're seeing on the screen what I'm saying is being recorded

12:29 And you have access to those generally after fast but the latest in the

12:35 . Okay um everything you need from on blackboard. Okay. Um our

12:43 , our virtual So you could do completely online and people do do

12:47 Okay. But but this time Okay. I am putting in attendance

12:53 there now. It's not a high for 5% of your grades.

12:57 Okay. And even that if you through that policy, even that's a

13:03 bar. Okay. And I'll get specific specific on this in a

13:08 Okay? But there is no substitute all right. If you if you

13:11 not to come to class at that's fine. And you can make

13:14 a in this course without without that . You absolutely can. Okay.

13:20 but it's up to you. Um but there is no substitute for

13:27 . I'm not gonna do anything else this. Okay. But this is

13:30 All right. If you do it you don't Okay. Um and if

13:35 can't attend, I don't even Okay. It's your option whether you

13:41 to come around. Okay. the one exception to that is If

13:46 the attendance thing is like a 67% . Right? That doesn't even begin

13:51 February one because the university has set this soft open again. Right?

13:59 which is fine. Okay. And so I'm only gonna the clicker

14:07 Right? But I want um I the mobile app maybe because it's the

14:13 option. Right? But if you a already. Mm hmm,

14:20 I don't know. I'm sure everybody what these are right now. Little

14:25 deles. Um, but the mobile is the way to go is the

14:29 option. You always have your cell on you. So that less risk

14:33 forgetting it. Okay. Um, that's how attendance is taken again.

14:38 elaborate on that in a second. . Um, okay. Policy.

14:44 can't tell you to do anything in of wear a mask and get

14:48 But I can only strongly suggested that write, I'm not wearing one.

14:52 I put these things out here how protection it really is. But I

14:56 a distance. I'll stay in my away from you, but I just

14:59 lecture the mask on a you won't able to hear me very well.

15:05 will sound very well. So I taking the exception but I have maintained

15:11 . Okay. So, and trying keep these things in front of

15:14 So, but you know, face distancing yourself. The attendance thing at

15:21 thinking anyway, the attendance since it's like 60 65% role. You have

15:25 83 days. Okay. Which is four weeks, right? We don't

15:30 to come to class and I'll be to write. Um, I think

15:34 in itself will, will reduce size. Okay. Hopefully I get

15:40 than five people here, right? it won't be to the rafters were

15:46 of something that we see right Okay. And that's enough to spread

15:50 apart if you're worried about that. . Of course. But the things

15:55 can do to protect yourself mask and and vaccine vaccination. Okay. Um

16:01 actually went I went two years without Covid and I got it two weeks

16:07 school started. Yeah. Um but was vaccinated boosted. The worst I

16:12 . I'd say it was like three on the third day. I was

16:15 about 80% or more. I thought did have a fever the first

16:21 101.4. So low grade fever. then that went away. So you

16:27 , I'm sure really much worse had been vaccinated and boosted. But um

16:33 , I don't understand people are I've got a couple of emails but

16:37 not gonna back down on the attendance . Right? I would I have

16:41 in two years of online mode more less is there's a parameter that the

16:49 looks at called de parents working, ? It's called D. F.

17:00 . Great. Okay. Which is number of these chefs and ws a

17:06 member has in their course. Mind sharing on the lower end.

17:13 . Pre pandemic. Okay. Like uh 15% or something like that.

17:22 . Um Whereas that's probably doubled. online. I'm not doing anything different

17:27 than people just now going taking courses . That's not true. That's true

17:32 our family, right? It's gone tank okay Because online being online is

17:37 for everybody, definitely not. Um So it's my that and again

17:43 attendance policy is very low bar. . But I think I think you

17:49 will do better. I mean at that's what the data says that you'll

17:52 better if you just come to Okay? At least sometimes.

17:59 So I don't think it's outrageous. um To expect that I'm talking to

18:07 low bar. You can still take just almost you can go not quite

18:11 almost you can come to class one and not the next and have to

18:15 that pattern throughout the semester. Almost quite okay. But the point is

18:20 can come to class come to class if you've got covid don't come to

18:25 . Okay? So if you're here means you're not exhibiting any symptoms.

18:30 have not tested positive or been diagnosed have not knowing you've been exposed to

18:35 . Okay. Again, testing It's free testing. I didn't,

18:39 went just right in front of the center of south. There's little box

18:43 it won't just persons in there, samples and that's all they do.

18:47 think. Okay, that's a pcr . I didn't get the at home

18:51 okay governments paying for them actually free . Um I did the at home

18:58 . Actually did both. But vaccination encouraged office. Okay. So these

19:06 things to protect yourself. So should be fearful? I don't think

19:09 You know I don't think you need be just if you are of that

19:13 then sit in the corner and get with people but have a mask

19:17 you know. Um I think you'll okay. I mean even if you

19:23 it, you know if you're vaccinated and you know you'll be okay.

19:30 . It should be all right. Anyway that's that's what I'll say about

19:36 . Um as today is always the list if you want more details.

19:43 . Um and and the and links things are in there as well.

19:48 . As well. This is one them is to the U.

19:51 Website. Big thing there about, know there's a site for students and

19:55 etcetera. Okay. Questions because that's I do when I get when the

20:01 says I have covid bob. What do I do? Right,

20:04 you go to um because that that's what I do. Okay.

20:07 that's just follow those guidelines. Um Any questions before? Okay anybody

20:17 Got Covid? Sorry. Bad Ok. Okay. All right.

20:25 components. Okay. So exams quizzes there's two types of quizzes and there's

20:29 blackboard and the blackboard quizzes are not not. I never used it but

20:37 probably familiar with respond this lockdown browser not does not involve any of

20:42 You can have all your family and over while you're taking you want.

20:47 . But Blackbeard quizzes are that Okay. Whether it's a unit

20:51 so demonstrate weekly unit quiz. Uh know quiz is about every, you

20:57 it comes before an exam, about week before an exam. You know

21:01 it's meant to be kind of somewhat a tune up for the exam.

21:04 more lengthy, little more comprehensive. basically covering the stuff we've, you

21:11 , for most of that year This is divided into four units.

21:15 And um so weakly unit quizzes are little bit more comprehensive. Weekly quizzes

21:21 so but again it's there's no web property. You just get on there

21:26 do the quizzes you feel with book , whatever. Okay um the exams

21:33 before in person at casa. So of the testing centers you probably from

21:38 casa already. If you're not again all the guidelines there just go to

21:44 website which that's a concept that you that you I think and then just

21:52 at the site but the point is have to have a time slot before

21:55 take an exam. Okay. No dropped um There is no what's called

22:03 final exam is just example for, just covers each example that covers one

22:07 of the course, so it's not . Okay. Um let's see

22:14 So the smart work. There is component of the textbook ah more specifically

22:22 a homework, it's an online homework that's run by the textbook publisher.

22:27 . And um the book is recommended required. Yeah, The other

22:35 the 3rd edition and I'm speaking in of in my opinion how well written

22:42 is, easy to understand additions 33 four are better than one and

22:47 Okay, you can take, an edition is fine, but I would

22:51 with either four or 3. Um but you get the e

22:56 you can get the fifth edition, the e book, which is the

22:59 option. Okay? And that comes make sure make sure, so if

23:04 don't get a book but make sure get the smart work because that you

23:07 get by itself without a boat. and that just just access through,

23:14 something and there's a again it's on on the blackboard, right? Go

23:18 the Smart work folder, click on . It'll take it to the site

23:22 it gives you the option to purchase board to get the Smart work

23:25 Uh So your choice whatever you wanna . Okay, But it is 10%

23:30 the great okay um the and there's that's not Smart work is mostly

23:42 do every week but not every Okay, there's nothing there's nothing to

23:48 this week obviously. But but that schedule is also the turning schedules also

23:53 in the at the at the at smart website but also on blackboard?

23:58 so you can check that to see stuff to do. But again I'll

24:01 sending out emails twice a week saying is new, that's coming up Blah

24:05 . Okay uh the attendant so mentioned so it's 5% through clippers. And

24:12 so Starting February one Okay which is weeks in two weeks. Um That's

24:20 Those 24 days begin with that february . Okay technically 28 days in the

24:27 semester but we're starting the attendant things start until the then so which means

24:34 is 16 of 24 7 10 16 24 classes if you want to get

24:40 full amount of that in fact. So basically it's eight days three days

24:47 amounts to uh you know because we twice a week. So um you

24:53 once those days were used up so you attend you attend um Not 16-24

25:01 with 15. Right well that that day maybe just about zero. Um

25:11 You know this can be it's a by case amazing but if you have

25:15 or something prevents you or whatever but know I think with 883 days I

25:21 think it's gonna be an issue. I think everybody will will be able

25:25 do this okay to do the minimum least we'll see. Okay. Um

25:34 so the clicker. So do you one already whether app or handheld

25:41 You just need to make sure your is not expired. Okay. Um

25:46 there's a way to check that maybe have to have like three green check

25:49 or something like that. But consult the syllabus. Okay. Um

25:53 don't have one my my opinion in mobile app. The cheapest, cheapest

25:58 . Okay. And you're going to these things in other classes besides this

26:04 anyway so it's not like you're only for this class. Okay um Again

26:12 pages 89 all about 2%. And a lot of stuff on the on

26:17 U. H. Web. There's uhh there's actually a person from the

26:22 that's in house here on campus that can consult with their in the CTV

26:30 , passionate business building. But they have posted a lot of stuff on

26:36 on the U. H. And again look at the syllabus to

26:40 to their tutorials and video tutorials, to use them and how to register

26:45 blah blah. All that stuff. there's a link, there is a

26:49 link on blackboard. So go go that and that's where you start the

26:54 . Okay? Um So you've got have a clicker handheld or mobile

27:02 I don't accept somebody handed me a with the answers for the clicker questions

27:06 work has to be app or click . Um let's see, flip flipped

27:15 or what? The flip flap, past days are days built into kind

27:20 mixed things up from the regular Okay. And so what is

27:25 Well, it occurs on these four dates during the semester. Okay.

27:31 basically once one of these per each . Okay. And so what you

27:37 is all you're doing is you are preparing, you're trying to master the

27:43 completely on your own. Okay, the the uh your lecturers will be

27:51 beforehand that you will look at. , so you will do basically your

27:56 studying by looking at video lectures um notes that are posted, textbook

28:02 redevelopment pages. Um So basically you're and on your own for those

28:09 Okay? Um to see if you master the material that's for that

28:15 So for example, uh Chapter Four one is material growth. Uh that's

28:24 main concept there. So you're gonna to learn that mastered on your own

28:29 resources that will be available of Well beforehand. Okay, so they

28:34 in on a good day for the day. It's basically just pretty much

28:39 questions the whole time I'm protesting newer , but of course it's built

28:46 There's there's other stuff built in that of reinforce concepts right to go over

28:51 certain things of course. So it's 100% questions, but it's pretty much

28:57 with lots of clicker questions on those . OK And built around kind of

29:04 of certain things that certain topics that's what it is. So it's kind

29:09 like a electric class plus because it so many more questions but it's assuming

29:15 you've done your work first and you're of testing yourself here. Okay so

29:23 anyway that's what that's just kind of things up a little bit.

29:28 Um There's it doesn't count for an grade other than you know clicker

29:34 The general fast stuff so mainly centering exam makeups. Black work quiz

29:42 smart work late late work so all any kind of late work missed exams

29:47 stuff can summarize kind of bottom line saying um horrified as soon as you

29:56 . 24 hours right provided on Don't wait two weeks right? Um

30:05 Document verifying right? Just saying it though it may be 1,000% true.

30:12 it up with documentation whatever that may okay and documentation that can has contact

30:19 on. Okay so um that was toothpicks promptness in tell me what's going

30:28 and back it up with evidence. um Now each one itself has kind

30:36 maybe some some differences but they're all all linked by that same thing.

30:41 me as soon as you can and evidence. Okay But for further specifics

30:46 look through the look at the Okay. Um excused absence. So

30:53 U. U. H. Has list of excused absences. If you're

30:57 , you know is my absence for in this category? And look at

31:01 syllabus pages 16 17 Clovis exam policy you've got covid. So the exams

31:09 through before taking that one of the centers. Jack obviously if you have

31:15 that falls in the period of the . Okay. A what do you

31:18 notified quickly provide the evidence right then I can arrange that the exam be

31:26 not in person at casa. Still concept but not in person.

31:31 But that is only reserved for you case of covid. Right. If

31:36 have an excused absence that's not covid . Like you have a wreck on

31:41 way to your exam time or something yeah you can just be rescheduled at

31:47 and you'll go there and take it the next day or what happened.

31:52 . Um Great disputes. So once were posted on blackboard he had a

32:00 to say all right, doctor nap full of blah blah. I'm contesting

32:04 great Fine. That's fine. You do that but that you can't you

32:09 argue an exam one grade on week do it. Um At the Mcdonald's

32:20 that really only affects the casa Okay. And then their profit people

32:25 that there's incidences I get notified. you know just don't do any funny

32:30 uh at casa. Okay. Now leaving classrooms were done so kind

32:36 I guess for everybody's best interest and guess mine um even though if I

32:41 covid again I don't think I'm not die from it but I hope

32:46 I'll I don't want to go down they don't have to quarantine. Okay

32:52 for now let's uh this is me not have a crush of people.

32:58 if you do have questions I absolutely to answer them. Okay so maybe

33:03 email or come to office hours. If it's a couple of weeks standing

33:08 like maybe at the front desk that's . Okay. I'm not saying don't

33:12 down at all just not like you it's like I never really had that

33:16 people around me even after class but know a few that here and there

33:20 fine just at a distance. Um Okay let's see any questions.

33:29 that's it. But yes. Yeah from that a 5th class day.

33:45 only you must go back to that . Yeah so for example 5th class

33:51 for part one. Picture questions only come from that. Right so you

33:55 at the let there be a video Chapter four part 1 and only that

33:59 . You look at that read the blah blah blah and then because the

34:02 should only come for that. Yeah yeah so weekly quizzes cover,

34:17 will only cover will cover um Tuesday it will cover content from that Tuesday

34:24 thursday at that. Uh no I covered a chapter in one left turn

34:32 slow but but for the first time 16 years I last couple of weeks

34:41 I kept track of balls. lectures what days because my my course schedule

34:48 a syllabus has never ever been Oh yeah everything's falling right in line

34:53 wise. Never been there. Until I think this semester will be

34:56 first time because I went through like , how many days it took me

34:59 do each thing. So the course you're seeing for this semester should be

35:05 accurate. So I'd be shocked if fell behind this time. Okay.

35:10 So that's your question. Yeah. week's weekly black book is covers like

35:16 information from the two days during that the unit quiz will be more

35:22 It will cover the all the stuff covered in that unit up to that

35:27 . Yeah. Any other. Yes they cover more they cover each

35:40 Each exam covers a unit which can three or 4 Trackers. But the

35:45 exam each exam only covers a There is no comprehensive exam covering everything

35:50 the entire semester know anybody. Yes thanks. Uh that's that's an individual

36:01 . Um That's why I it's only not required. I just it's just

36:09 own personal preference which I'm sure some be with some won't like the idea

36:14 having a textbook. Yeah there was no. Yeah so you need to

36:22 to blackboard after class is over and at everything. I'm back there because

36:24 all there the whole shebang. And yeah the textbook will just be

36:30 additional resource. I think. I've wanted a textbook when I was a

36:35 . So that's me. But it not be you But you can also

36:39 get the cheapest option two. You you can you can just get it

36:43 have to be this publisher. It be a different culture but just don't

36:47 an addition that's too old. Or or a book that's to a

36:51 book that's too old. But something current that you know you can get

36:56 cheap. Okay. That's that's why understand books are expensive. Trust

37:00 So uh whatever you can do the money, they're fine. But you

37:04 I like having the idea of having resource like that. But you do

37:10 what are the what without the You got you've got recorded lectures,

37:16 got uh the lecture notes on on . You've got um what else you

37:24 I guess that's it anyway. Um yeah it's it is yours but I

37:29 I do recommend it any other questions 35 - 37 questions. You have

37:39 hour. Yes I'm sorry. Yes yes Question 1st of all have a

37:52 what's the channel 41? Yeah Yeah it will always be channel 41

38:00 handheld difference. There will be a I. D. That will pop

38:04 for the app. Oh yeah so we were like there's a question channel

38:11 don't have to do it once when come to class actually just if you

38:14 it now you never have to do again. Yeah so you're good you

38:17 to do it again. Who knows each chapter. What was was

38:27 Say again. I'm not taking a at my smart work just like

38:34 No you're only you're I'm not Why don't you wait at the

38:38 I'll look at that stuff. That's right. And then yeah back over

38:45 . Do you have I do not all the blackboard quizzes and quizzes contain

38:55 exam questions. Yeah. Yes it anti held during last time. No

39:02 you have um multiple times during the . So I want to say it

39:10 how casa does it but you'll you'll you may have you have multiple

39:15 Absolutely you won't be doing just during time. Although we will in fact

39:21 will you'll never be in a class . Your exams are always on and

39:25 friday Saturdays right And you have multiple to choose from on those two

39:30 Yeah. Any other are you gonna ? Oh everything's posted already but you

39:40 want, yeah you got everything everything at hand except recorded electric of course

39:45 those will come right after class or next morning at the latest. Any

39:51 . Yeah Professor. Do you provide with banknotes or is that just free

39:58 Yeah I don't I've never heard of my notes. I'm actually but no

40:03 it's that's uh the notes I provide what I call the lecture notes.

40:08 are the power points. It's either class like you're seeing now for

40:12 Okay but I may I do yeah content never changes. You may say

40:20 may have some slides in on a lecture day. They go wait I'll

40:24 this it's because I'm always thinking about how to present stuff. There may

40:28 a little different but they're always posted you ever see in here if you

40:31 have if you don't have it at before class you'll have it at hand

40:36 after class. Right? So there's been nothing that you'll see here that

40:40 will have access to. Yeah any questions. Yeah it's no exams.

40:51 only thing that's curved if possible are final grades at the end and the

40:57 works based on the overall class So think of the overall class average

41:03 the C. The C. Cut off. Okay. And so

41:09 if that average is like a 70 72 there's really not much of a

41:19 because that's you know that that's the . C. Color basically.

41:25 Right and and I Pretty much always the mark between 68 70 72

41:34 So the has historically hasn't really been curb in here because everybody I

41:40 So that so that for example I have I'm a professor that thinks you

41:46 agree great at 50 right? Isen't is the is the average for an

41:52 ? Right? And then and then get lots of points added to it

41:55 kind of even everything out more or . Right? I don't do

41:59 So my exams averages are never Um typically in the 68 to 72 range

42:11 every time. Okay. Maybe some here and there. Okay. Um

42:20 the and the. Great. I've the most variation in the in the

42:23 the covid times. It's online. certainly going online. The last I've

42:27 some changes going the less because I people just aren't black people just aren't

42:31 at online. Just strictly online Yeah and it shows in their

42:38 Okay so um but Historically I pretty get in that range of 60-78-72

42:50 So yeah That's that's been pretty accurate 1516 years. Yeah and yet Now

43:02 can always be so to finish your 1st so a curve can go two

43:08 , Right? It can be one benefits you. Or if the gravity's

43:11 so high, right Then. What professor wants to To increase letter rate

43:16 offs. Right? So where without ? Or maybe it's 1919 above and

43:22 but if you have really high averages maybe it takes a 95 to make

43:27 a minus. Right? So unless curve benefits you, I don't do

43:32 . Right? So, if you to be curved, you're hoping that

43:37 bombs right? And I don't want . So um But I mean,

43:43 always an exception. Okay. Um I've been pretty accurate with this

43:49 So we'll see because I don't I know anybody. I don't want anybody

43:53 fail. Right? But it Okay. Uh Nevertheless, So video

44:03 . Mhm. All right. Uh see. We stopped here. Way

44:10 talk about that. Okay. We'll about that. Okay, So kind

44:14 course um layout. If you will you look at blackboard, you probably

44:19 this already or looked through the syllabus the course schedule. Uh So basically

44:24 units. Um First unit is kind here's what microbes are kind of living

44:31 perspective. Um Then it's all There's a pair of what appropriate skills

44:36 all about what their you know, their what's their self form structures these

44:42 of things, then bacterial growth and control of growth. Unit two is

44:47 heavy metabolism viruses, viruses. Um and then a lot of

44:54 Okay, so energetic metabolism respiration. do a trophy for the trophy.

45:01 , um Unit two. We will about the I would think that everybody

45:08 everything about viruses by now. Um but we'll talk about Covid certainly

45:12 studying there among others. Um you three is begins with um uh kind

45:22 switch it up a little bit this . So unit three begins with kind

45:26 topics that maybe relate to unit two we've just finished previously. Right?

45:31 two which is our metabolism. Then get unit three with microbial ecology that

45:39 wastewater treatment systems uh um nitrogen uh archaeological cycle. So so kind

45:48 extension of metabolism. Maybe apply You look at it that way.

45:53 then the rest of the rest of , three is all um No.

45:58 and under bacterial genetics. If you . Right, talk about parapsychology,

46:03 mechanisms, regulation etcetera. So um you haven't if you have had black

46:12 and tryptophan opteron. Here you go . Okay, but if not then

46:17 there will be no deal. Then last unit is exclusively on medical clinical

46:23 . So we talk about the innate system that could be a system et

46:29 . So and we talked about in context of adaptive immune system. Talk

46:35 vaccines there. Okay, so that's unit of the course. Okay,

46:44 let's see what else. Okay, a little bit quicker. Practice.

46:48 quiet person. So if you got liquor being handheld or mobile app.

46:55 . So channel 41 and again you you only need um well, If

47:01 use your hand held clicker in other and they and they don't use channel

47:06 , then you will have to program 41 of any kind here.

47:10 But only If you if everybody uses and you're the classes then you never

47:15 to keep changing it. Okay. it's what will change each time is

47:21 session I. D. That you there. That's for the mobile

47:24 That will change every class. Because it's randomly generated before the

47:31 And then so that that would be each time. Try. So uh

47:37 this question here relates to what I to talk about next. Okay.

47:42 I have a specific grade and let open the polls have a specific

47:47 I must make in this course E My life depends on it.

47:52 , I need this great in order graduate, stay on probation, maintain

47:57 scholarship or for some other reason. ? A answer a if this applies

48:05 you be if this is not a to you. Okay. Mhm.

48:15 So that last reference there weeks one the 14 men in a note for

48:19 to mention something. Okay. And I let it go for a few

48:33 and have a timer going. But not saying that Bridget today.

48:39 Yeah and we fight for the term or do we have to fight for

48:46 come back. It's up to you you wanna do. Yeah. The

48:49 was about you can buy a subscription a semester or a year, so

48:55 totally up to you. It doesn't to me. Sure. Okay,

49:01 let's uh let's go on, let's what we got here. So I

49:10 that okay, 86% and I get . Um So the note about weeks

49:17 to 1415 text um Weeks 1 to is when I can absolutely help you

49:28 any aspect of the course. if you have questions about questions about

49:34 topic at hand um you need help to office hours. That's that's what

49:40 here for. Okay Um weeks 15 16. I really can't help you

49:48 . Okay. But it seems like what students want motion, you might

49:53 is in week 15 and 16 I'm not doing well. Can you

50:00 exams? So and so for me you give me 10 points so I

50:03 graduate? Can you just do No, I can't. Okay.

50:11 guys, my kind of help you Which 1 to 14? I can't

50:17 the curriculum now in week 15 can , this happens. I haven't really

50:23 . No example the curriculum you see some of us right now is what

50:27 will be, it won't change, I'm here to help help during the

50:35 . Not at the end when points wanted. Okay. It just doesn't

50:41 . Okay, so um So it's important that you make a certain rate

50:47 you're struggling. Okay then seek There's no shame in seeking help.

50:53 very definition of insanity, anybody know the definition of insanity is?

50:59 Doing the same thing exactly. Um classmates mr Sorry? Yes, because

51:09 don't really see I saw a person semester with He said 1 25 exam

51:15 28 exam three 24. I mean can't possibly doing the same thing over

51:22 over. That's what happens. But result. Okay. The the the

51:31 knee jerk reaction I think is you a make a score which he was

51:36 acceptable and you go, oh I to study hard the way I did

51:41 first time, you're just doing the thing hard, You're making the same

51:47 . Okay. So he breaks the . All right. If you don't

51:51 well the first time for God's don't do the same thing again.

51:56 . Um But apparently that's what will . I've seen it for 16

52:03 OK, but there are those that break out of that. Okay and

52:07 success. Okay. Because what you do is ask yourself this question

52:14 Okay, what makes me think I this as you are studying and whatever

52:20 is that you do and studying because answer to that question is not Well

52:27 I read the book. Well professor took to the electrical reform exam.

52:34 I really listened to all your lectures the hand. That doesn't mean

52:38 I can give the book and blackboard to a junior high school too.

52:44 you have an exam on this stuff two weeks, right? Yes.

52:50 um you have to make that it's active process, the studying thing.

52:56 not just sitting in just exploring and . Okay. Yes, frankly none

53:03 this is stepping back and not doing other than just kind of thinking about

53:08 . Okay, so doing these kind activities here. Right? So the

53:14 is not to memorize everything and there's stuff to memorize but more is to

53:19 this, understand, conceptualize, Okay. Synthesize information in your own

53:25 . Alright. So and so have of a routine, right, gather

53:30 , right? And before you come class right? You you do your

53:35 of course you're not gonna have mastered material before you come to class.

53:39 but at least it's in your right? If I'm the first time

53:43 hearing it, it's probably not even while to come. Right, you

53:47 have some idea of what's going on class that day as I started talking

53:51 it. Oh yeah, I remember about that or this or that and

53:54 begin to make connections with. So um I'm gonna get there's a

54:00 of resources on blackboard, right? also animations that are posted. So

54:04 of ways to help you learn this because people do learn, we all

54:09 different. Okay. So but the concept is no matter what you do

54:17 you need to wait a way to that studying method you're using is working

54:25 . And that's where this idea of people call it concept map. Um

54:31 you know when people come to visit during office hours um I make it

54:36 because they just want me to regurgitate answer to that question and I never

54:41 that. I answered that question with question which can be very annoying but

54:45 meant to get you to think Okay. And though the information in

54:49 head and it can be excruciating getting out sometimes but it comes out.

54:56 know it's there. All right. you have to do that process to

55:00 . Okay? So if if you all the right and you you you

55:08 to class you and you put the and you re heard the lectures and

55:12 read the book right? If you know microbial growth then you should be

55:17 to take a black piece of paper write microbial growth. No okay I'm

55:23 take this in my pin. I'm lock myself in the closet. And

55:27 these two things, I'm gonna see you know about that. Then you

55:32 to in direct pictures, labeled diagrams sentences have senses or whatever. Just

55:40 it all out on that paper. you get the papers up and go

55:45 what is this? What is this ? What have I got? Okay

55:48 about that? I missed this. know that's the process. Right so

55:54 now you have my paper. What's your brain on that subject? Can't

55:58 any clearer? Okay, answering the . What makes you think? I

56:02 this? Thanks. So that's the I recommend Right now people tend to

56:10 that because it takes some work to that. Okay. It's easy just

56:13 open the book. Just keep reading reading and highlighter and virtually having the

56:19 book. Um or rewriting the Okay. But and maybe that works

56:27 you. But you should test it just to make sure this is the

56:31 to test it. Very easy. know I think I want to excels

56:35 Chapter three. Alright. Drugs not serpent. Or draw a rod shaped

56:41 you like rod shaped cells. You cold? You go, okay

56:45 my back feels. So what do know they have all the structures?

56:50 any other functions. Right. These these are easy ways to test yourself

56:54 that's the ultimate to be as a . Okay. But only do is

57:01 in a vacuum you don't have any resources, right? Because you're trying

57:04 test yourself, You're not trying to an answer. You're trying to see

57:08 honestly evaluate what do I know about and you can have the answer go

57:12 in front of your face, There's a blank sheet after you can

57:16 there for 30 minutes. That's a flag. Okay? Or maybe it's

57:21 all right now or something like It's somewhere in between 50% and

57:25 Somewhere in there. But you want know where you stand. You want

57:29 know the answer Well, before an because you made me get help.

57:34 . So again, there's lots of . You can have an army of

57:39 tours with. It's all means unless can do this exercise and have some

57:48 . Now granted maybe 1% of you take this to heart. It didn't

57:54 . Okay. So the important point I can help I can help weeks

57:59 through 14. Okay? So you , take advantage of that. But

58:05 means come to office hours is Fantastic. But don't come there as

58:13 black slave asking for all the answers I'm gonna ask you questions.

58:20 But um but this but I'm asking to draw the information on how much

58:26 you know, I think you do this, I can tell, you

58:29 or not with a couple of questions but but the biggest thing is is

58:37 because I'll say yeah, yeah, . You know this, what about

58:41 or that? And then I'll get response. That sounds good question because

58:45 not confident in the answer. So and so let's go ahead.

58:50 a process. But but self analysis analyze yourself. Your knowledge on this

58:57 doing the exercises are so simple. can be just sitting on the bench

59:01 there. But wow, I I just went through um,

59:07 Do I know what that is? write it down and go great,

59:12 exercise. Okay. Um, and you find that you're consistently not doing

59:17 on those, maybe there's something in study with Michael. Okay.

59:22 The point of that is to evaluate in that way. Yes, we

59:26 blackboard quizzes do not by no We're making hundreds of blackboard quizzes will

59:30 need to make 100 on the It will not two different environments.

59:35 can have notes in books and things you while you're taking it back.

59:39 example, totally different environment from, the actual cost exam. So don't

59:45 if you're making time, there's no because you can make it does not

59:50 correlate necessary. Okay. So, , but you should have some level

59:59 confidence, but it's not, it's the be all end all right,

60:03 be all end all is more of exercise I'm talking about. Okay.

60:09 and as always with that, But is going to be an exam will

60:12 on these examining beauties that they're only for the first example. So that's

60:18 gonna be on, examines what's on . I literally hold those exemptions up

60:24 sheets up in front of you as make an exam to make sure they're

60:28 . Okay. Um Gosh, um questions about it? Yeah.

60:39 there is. And that's insults. you'll see there's a there's the

60:43 what you just said, launch the SCP Scholars and Richard program.

60:49 also have stuff. So yeah, that's that's in the stillness.

60:55 Any other questions. Okay, um this is one example of a

61:04 a concept map. I think I've these posters on light, but if

61:08 , I'll put them up if you're . Um but this is an example

61:13 kind of four chapter some of the one stuff. So, we're talking

61:16 microbes. Right? So that's like first term, right? And then

61:20 are the connector phrases circled here are kind of what may be the stumbling

61:29 . So you go microbes. okay. Where they originate from?

61:32 ? They are different from uh cells are of this type. They are

61:37 comprised of this so that the connector in that are circled are kind of

61:43 things you got to kind of think . Right. So you have the

61:46 topic, Right? Microbes. There go. Okay. Now what do

61:49 do? Well, this is where go. Okay. The different types

61:53 things that they can be on if defined as they are classified as they

61:59 comprised of. So, these kind things you think about, right.

62:02 then So now how much it gets out? All right. Is related

62:07 your depth of knowledge. Okay, is one example. Let's have to

62:12 like this. It's just one There's a there's a there's a cheap

62:17 on blackboard called study tips for success biology courses, which comes from the

62:22 . Of course. Um but this an example of this concept mapping

62:29 Okay, if you're interested. Um , so let's do one. These

62:37 pictures popped up all throughout the slides . So, uh let's see if

62:48 uh which of the previously shown bacterial would you think most likely to cause

62:56 staph infection? Staff in fact. get us thinking microbiology wise. And

63:08 you're answering that, I should say course. Uh I went over what's

63:12 each unit. This course is 99% more than 99% pro carry oats and

63:24 and viruses. Right. You don't to talk about the materials that much

63:28 in, you know, comparative purposes and there. But it's it's it's

63:35 , archaea and viruses. Okay, let's see we got mm hmm.

63:47 . The changing like like how that up and down. Okay. Um

63:56 you answered D Why is it why it that one? Why is it

64:01 . And not B. Because they grape like clusters, right? Streptococcus

64:08 is being changed. Is that a ? Crocs staph staph infection, staphylococcus

64:15 side and that her management is Okay. Um Let's uh do oh

64:26 let's get that one. Let's do one. We'll finish up on this

64:30 so um. Alright again. Which is false regarding back. This

64:37 take us into thursday's topics. Which false. Yeah. Alright let's see

65:30 . So if it took way longer I thought. But that's fine.

65:36 Many questions for you questions. So let's see the answer here is

65:47 false one. Is They generally average 20 and 100 microns there, like

65:54 - 10 microns in size. Um uh Any questions? So we'll we'll

66:05 on chapter 14 on 14. Checker . Excuse me. Chapter one on

66:11 . Okay folks, Have a good . See you then you got any

66:15 email?
