00:01 Alright, we're gonna go ahead and started. Hopefully me standing up here

00:05 not gonna get in the way. I know it's already going to do

00:08 so I better fix it now. So this is human physiology. I'm

00:14 wayne. Welcome to another semester. ! Really? That excited.

00:21 Okay. Um So hopefully you're in right place if you're not don't be

00:25 . I've already, you know, people to rooms that we're like halfway

00:30 the campus. So you know, actually my first class, 8 30

00:34 30 people got up because the class been moved and they didn't even

00:38 So it was you know, perfectly . I don't know why they thought

00:41 was my room because I've had my forever. Anyway, so this is

00:45 of the general information for when we and stuff. My office is over

00:48 SRT you guys know where S. . Two is. It's an ugly

00:51 brown building by the big building. S. R. One. Don't

00:55 too confused. I'm on the second basically if you go up the

00:59 take a left and go halfway down hall, I'm there. If you

01:01 lost, just keep going around the it's a circle and just keep doing

01:05 you kind of figure it out. it's easy to find me sort of

01:08 if you want to get in touch me you can call me but if

01:11 not in my office I'm not gonna my call. I've never check voicemail

01:16 I really don't like voice mail because get calls somewhere like three o'clock in

01:20 morning. I guess. Some people I live here, I don't

01:24 And they'll say, hey, I've this problem with this. And then

01:26 I'll get back in or I used get back in and I call them

01:29 and say, hey, you called about this problem. So yeah,

01:32 , I figured it out. It just like forget this if you have

01:35 issue email, if you don't get touch with me by phone. And

01:38 generally speaking, if you're masking your phone number, if it says

01:43 unknown or something, I just don't at this point, I'm so tired

01:46 the scam phone calls you get them . So I just don't bother.

01:50 you can call me if I'm I'll answer if your, if your

01:52 is listed. If not, I just just email me and um,

01:57 to let you know, I'm not your generation. I'm old now.

02:01 realized this a couple of weeks ago my kids stopped listening to me.

02:04 um, yeah, that's, and , I don't do email on my

02:10 on purpose. I don't do email five o'clock on purpose. I do

02:16 starting at 7 30 in the morning I get into work. And the

02:20 for that is I get about 100 50 emails a day and I want

02:24 have a life. Um, so the easy way to get a

02:27 is to stop answering emails and limiting you get when you actually do

02:32 So I would encourage you to do as well. Start living a business

02:36 as opposed to anybody can contact me any point in their time at just

02:40 if someone doesn't respond to you, mean that they don't like you,

02:44 sometimes sometimes that's called ghosting. Um , so if you want to come

02:48 meet with me, my office hours from 10 to 11 30 on Tuesdays

02:52 Thursdays. So it's the uh the that's like would be the second unit

02:58 the day on Tuesday Thursdays. If have a class during that time,

03:01 can't make it, just email me say, hey, I'd like to

03:04 and talk to you. Um but have a class during your office

03:08 when can we meet, we can the time. I usually can meet

03:10 little bit before class if necessary. can meet after class as well,

03:15 Wednesday friday is a little bit more iffy, I have meetings scattered

03:20 so it's kind of like, you , I'm not sure when I'm

03:23 but we'll figure it out. So email me, I'm available, I'm

03:26 to help you achieve your goals and ultimately what I want to understand about

03:30 class, this is me about helping achieve your goals. That doesn't mean

03:33 gonna be the anything can go, really, really stringent on on helping

03:39 in terms of we're gonna work hard we're gonna be better than everybody else

03:42 that you cannot all hopefully get to you wanna be. Alright. That

03:47 sense. I'm not trying to scare . Say I'm tough. That's just

03:50 . All right, so, um guys know that ula is E.

03:55 L. A ula. All Most of you guys, every one

03:59 you should be not. Of I know what you'll is because every

04:01 I get a new app or download software, this pop up comes up

04:05 I just clicked accept and I move and that's a ula in user license

04:12 , right? You click accept. have no idea what you agreed to

04:15 . Like, you're giving away your , right? Uh You're most likely

04:21 away all your personal information and personal , right? You guys haven't read

04:26 of these, have you? Oh goodness, you guys are so

04:29 Um Anyway, that's what a syllabus like, Alright, what it

04:33 it defines what this class is gonna , what's required of you and what

04:39 grades are gonna be determined by and reading through that and accepting. And

04:44 saying I'm gonna be in the what you're doing is basically clicking the

04:47 button. Alright. And so there's you go and look at it,

04:51 really long. It's about 13 pages gobbledygook and I say gobbledygook because every

04:56 of the provost's office asked me to something else in there that really isn't

05:01 . But I'm doing it because they me to. But if you look

05:04 it it's like here's what the this is what when the tests

05:07 this is what the class material is be. This is what the reading

05:10 what the textbook is going to be . Uh Here's your assignments and so

05:14 . That's all there. If you . You should go and look at

05:17 , see what I have or what expecting of you. But there's also

05:21 know like a great policy. Um I'll get to that and just admit

05:26 what grades are. But like the honesty policy that you've all agreed to

05:31 just attending the university when the uh it means to get an incomplete how

05:36 withdraw all that stuff there. So you haven't looked at your syllabus

05:40 I would encourage you to do so I'm right handed. So I tend

05:43 be on this side. I will really really hard to come over here

05:47 . But it's just weird Sea so right anyway so make sure you go

05:54 the syllabus to make sure you understand what the class is gonna be

05:57 What you're getting yourself into our Is this one right here text.

06:01 medical physiology. They went up in this year is really really upset.

06:05 now 114 bucks. Used to be . It was the best purchase,

06:10 best buy you could ever get in not just in physiology but anywhere.

06:16 you ever bought a science textbook for bucks? Yeah. See when I

06:21 that and then when I actually looked the content I was like oh man

06:24 is the best book you'll ever I mean this is a book if

06:27 planning on a career in biology or medicine or any sort of health

06:33 this is a book you're gonna keep the rest of your life.

06:35 It's it's a it's a deal. what's what's what's great about it?

06:39 wish I actually made money on this I'm like a salesperson on this.

06:42 not only when you purchase it new you pay that ridiculously low price?

06:47 low price. Right. What you is you get lifetime access to the

06:50 . Text so you can actually sell book and still have access to the

06:55 . That's pretty cool. Right? if you, how many guys bought

06:59 ? Alright. Further? You haven't it yet? You've got a reading

07:02 tonight so uh better hope it comes . Uh But anyway so uh further

07:08 purchased it? You bought the Right did you bring it to

07:13 Anyone? Oh my goodness. So start doing curls now. How

07:19 That way Too much? About £8. but it's a fantastic book for you

07:26 you're taking cell biology, you'll probably refer back to this book before you

07:29 back to the cell biology book. really that good. Alright anyway make

07:33 you get it. I say older not acceptable, primarily because third edition

07:36 been around for a long time but your reading assignments are based on not

07:40 page numbers but units like it's like unit and that unit, this

07:43 this page starts on and so So if you go to an older

07:46 you're gonna get lost and you're gonna to figure out what what sections I'm

07:51 to. Okay and yes there will reading assignments. Every class you're gonna

07:55 to read beforehand. Alright. Um by the way if you do have

07:59 device, I can't believe I still this slide. Just make sure it's

08:03 silence. Your your ringtone is only for you. Um Policy points,

08:09 that are kind of important to your . Anyone here graduating this semester.

08:14 . Do you know when your fees due for your graduation stuff? You

08:20 have you? If you don't know academic calendar, I'll tell you university

08:26 gonna expect you to pay them. on. Right. Uh Days are

08:30 view. The seventh of september is last day you can drop any course

08:34 a great attached to it. The you get to that date, the

08:37 we get to keep your money. kind of make decisions early rather than

08:41 . Uh After the semester begins after . R. D. Is what

08:45 day is called. It's the official day. Uh Now you have a

08:49 and so the only way you can a class at this point is with

08:52 . S. Last day to do is six is the 16th of

08:55 Uh If you want to figure out your finals are, so you can

08:58 purchasing your plane tickets, Go check the academic calendar. We don't like

09:03 . Like already bought the plane tickets . Well, I'm sorry you wasted

09:05 , You're taking the test. Um honesty. This is a big deal

09:10 our department is getting worse and worse worse. Or we're seeing a

09:14 a lot of things worse and worse worse. Now, I'm not sitting

09:16 going, you're a bunch of you're not all right. But there

09:20 people who don't understand the difference between and wrong when it comes to

09:25 All right. And so, if don't understand, you should probably find

09:30 what it means to be to what university considers to be cheating or what

09:36 is or plagiarizing you guys know what word plagiarism means, Do you guys

09:42 you know what it is though? . You nodded your head. You

09:45 give me an answer now. Very . That's that's actually the best

09:53 So what is it when you take that belongs to somebody else? What

09:55 that stealing? It's it's it's literally to as um intellectual stealing, intellectual

10:02 stealing. And you guys are probably it's no big, no big

10:05 No big deal. Let me tell a quick story. This is what

10:07 famous for. This is why my go so long as I tell stories

10:11 some people are not in their heads . Yeah. Yeah, I know

10:13 does. I had a student, have a paper in this class,

10:15 talk about the paper a little bit uh student turned in the paper.

10:20 you know there's two rounds. So , this was in the second round

10:24 gets his emails and says dr I'm grading my own paper, which

10:29 an impossibility. Alright, you hear right? I'm grading my own

10:33 I said that's not possible, let go check it out. And he

10:36 in grade in his paper was great other students paper and I went looked

10:40 that student had reviewed or in the review of that that particular students,

10:44 first person, the first students like the paper so much that literally

10:49 whole blocks of text, full paragraphs and submit it as their own.

10:58 they thought they would get away with , but it just so happened that

11:00 random number generator put them back together . Just the opposite direction. Person

11:06 kicked out of the college and was from the university for three years.

11:11 able to come back. Maybe it four years, but there are dire

11:15 . This is not just a a issue, it's not just a thing

11:20 you see in professionalism, it happens the level of the university as

11:23 And so part of this is to you. Now, let you understand

11:28 will happen if you do this what it does, it outlines your

11:32 just as well as it outlines Right, so just be aware of

11:34 that means. If you have a to fall into that category of like

11:40 stuff from a friend or copying their . This is not the time to

11:43 it. I've had students who went to professional schools, you all piling

11:46 professional school. # one on their is integrity. Number one had a

11:52 went to dental school, third year student got caught cheating on an

11:56 It took her several years to get dental school. I might add you

12:00 her out of school not going back the dream. So we try to

12:05 it now so that you can achieve goals for the future. Lastly,

12:08 you have a need for an accommodation the course. Uh This is the

12:13 you go to. There's also phone , there's also 1000 ways on the

12:17 basically go up to U. Of . Dot E. D.

12:18 Putting any search term you want in case would be accessibility. And you

12:22 go and look up and you can out how the university can accommodate you

12:26 you have a need for accommodation, know? So Look, if you

12:30 know where something is, you have you search engine just plug in the

12:33 words and it will pop up almost times out of 10. It'll pop

12:37 first on the first on the It's not second on the list.

12:41 been here long enough. The Do you like blackboard? One person

12:46 ahead. I think blackboard sucks. not. No, it's a terrible

12:52 of software. All right. But is where everything is, this is

12:55 learning system. So this is where see announcements. I post them there

12:58 then they get emailed out to you they'll they'll remain there for some

13:02 The syllabus city policy. Any panned ? You need like a lecture.

13:06 I always release lecture slides an hour class. I know if you're trying

13:10 print them up. That's kind of pain in the butt, but there's

13:12 reason for it. Any assignment that have particularly um Like the reading assignments

13:18 your writing assignments are gonna be there well. Things that you've turned

13:21 I record every lecture. This is yeah, by the way, if

13:24 in the front row always check to that orange lights on. If it

13:27 off we're not recording anything. Um But anyway, so any of

13:32 video recordings that I make, there'll links there. Uh It's where the

13:36 book is and it's not really a book, it's just where your grades

13:39 be recorded so that you can look them. This is why I say

13:42 mostly inaccurate. It cannot calculate your . You're gonna have to be responsible

13:46 that yourself. Alright. My math far far more complicated than blackboards,

13:51 can barely add two numbers together. I will show you how to determine

13:54 grade. You're responsible for doing Do not make decisions based on what

13:59 tells you. It's like listening to three year old. Okay. It

14:03 know what it's doing. It's useful keeping track of the scores to make

14:07 they're recorded correctly. It's not good calculating. Alright. I'm just letting

14:11 know that now um stuff you actually about. When do I have to

14:17 my test? Well there's one every and that's just a function of every

14:20 lecture. Um So the first one 13th in october 6th november 1st and

14:27 we're signed december 8th, so that's we do our our fourth exam,

14:32 don't, you'll hear me say but they're just they're all the

14:35 They're just every exam is non It just deals with the unit that

14:38 looking at. I don't drop any the exams. Their basic 50

14:43 multiple choice, 100 points total. this pattern right here 50 questions over

14:48 hour, that's what that is. one hour Um is standard for our

14:52 standard for our field. So those you planning on going into the health

14:57 ? This is what everything is gonna like from now on. All right

15:00 obviously if college setting different when you and you know take your boards,

15:04 your qualifying exams, all these different are going to have that kind of

15:09 there, maybe 200 questions. But it's 200 questions you would have four

15:15 , right, that makes sense. Anyone here knew not not aware of

15:21 do not be, don't be afraid say, okay casa is our testing

15:25 . It doesn't look anything like That's a picture I stole off the

15:29 of some random thing. Um And you do is on the days that

15:34 have exams we don't have class. so what you're gonna do is you're

15:38 go to the cost of testing center you've been assigned to. There are

15:41 of them. So you have to aware of which one you've been assigned

15:44 before you go there. You need go to that website register and then

15:48 need to go over to a cost one of them and you have to

15:51 your biometric which is basically a digital which really isn't your thumbprint. It's

15:55 a biometric. So that when you and check in you show them your

15:58 , you do the biometric. They do that right? Yeah and then

16:02 and then your that's how you check to take your exam. So don't

16:06 up here, you'll be sad and on the days of exams you're gonna

16:11 to casa to do that. So one of those four days I would

16:15 because I have taken the slide out casa opens up. So let's say

16:20 want to sign up for an exam the 13th of september who can tell

16:25 what day sign ups open two weeks . So if that's a Tuesday it

16:32 at midnight on a monday two weeks . And just like you trying to

16:38 a seat on Southwest Airlines, you're be sitting with your finger over the

16:41 at midnight desperately trying to get that that you want. No one laughed

16:48 that one person laughed. Thank You get the Gold Star for the

16:51 . Alright, alright. How many you guys want to take exams at

16:56 o'clock because you think that's better for . It's okay you can raise your

16:59 . No you don't like that five Yeah. Yeah now you're you're gonna

17:05 all day long stressing about the But if that's your preference, I

17:09 , there's all the people who aren't their hands over here. They're all

17:12 and they're all going to compete for five o'clock slot with you. Right

17:16 , the smart people are going for nine o'clock slot. Let's get it

17:19 with. I'm done. I can around campus for a little bit.

17:22 I go to Happy Hour. Everything's . All right now, but

17:26 you just find your preference. Just that there's not always gonna be all

17:29 slots available for everyone's preferred time. , there's a little bit of a

17:34 there two weeks before, literally from it turns from midnight to 1201.

17:41 . Sorry, not my rodeo. don't run it. Just one of

17:45 clowns. All right. We do reading assignments. We have the big

17:52 . Can I steal your big book a second since you actually lifted up

17:57 all right. I'm not even gonna it. See, I want you

18:00 see this bad boy. Uh One , one hour 50 questions. One

18:08 . Do the math. How How many seconds per question? It's

18:14 70 seconds per question. All I'm just holding up. Do not

18:20 me I'm gonna give it right back you. I mean, it's only

18:23 , but it's not like a $300 . But still that's that's like like

18:27 tank of gas. Right? So is your textbook. About 1400 pages

18:34 make you nervous. Yeah. Don't you don't have to read. All

18:38 pages is about 1300 of it. teasing. All right there. So

18:44 use this textbook to help prepare ourselves come to class. The truth

18:49 is your how many guys are planning health professions? Medical dental.

18:53 Who's taking this class? Just for . All right, good good.

18:58 , I'm glad. I mean take because they look like they're fun if

19:03 have opportunities to do so. And know that they're not tough do

19:08 I'm not saying don't drive. I'm telling you guys to leave the

19:11 But you know, but if you're on health profession this is like everyone's

19:14 this is like the crocs class. gotta take it. Well, how

19:17 guys have heard that? Medical or school is really, really hard.

19:22 you you're now like okay maybe it's . It's just dense. Alright.

19:28 dense. That's that's there's a Right? The material isn't difficult.

19:33 at our textbook. What's the name our textbook? Medical physiology? They

19:39 you the exact same thing. I'm you. All right. They just

19:43 a lot of it right material. not hard. It's just there's lots

19:49 it. And so one of the that we overcome quantity. Thank you

19:53 much. The way we overcome quantity we get used to bearing that

19:58 How many guys lift weights workout? . First day did you start,

20:04 you start just like I'm gonna jacket as much as I can go.

20:08 you start low and you build up finally you can actually do a lot

20:13 . Alright so 11 of the things we're doing is we're training ourselves to

20:18 dealing with the quantity of information that's be coming at. You see college

20:23 weird in the sense that we How many classes do we take in

20:26 semester? Like four Maybe 5. . If we're crazy six.

20:35 And then they're interspersed win. It's oh well I got two on Tuesday

20:39 . I got two on monday Wednesday . I got this weird class over

20:43 on a Wednesday, right we've got big gaps. We don't know what

20:46 do with them. You're supposed to . Um Right well medical and dental

20:51 is not like that. Medical and school is like going to work.

20:57 go and get there early in the . Eight o'clock nine o'clock whenever classes

21:01 and then you take class class class class class class. Class.

21:04 go home study, rinse repeat, lots of work not hard, just

21:13 of it. How do you govern that stuff? Well you need to

21:16 ready and prepared for it. It's different. Remember when you made that

21:19 from high school to college and everything all weird is like oh no one's

21:23 me, I'm just sitting here and like doing nothing in high school.

21:26 all of a sudden now they're expecting to do much more difficult stuff,

21:30 difficult. It's just coming at you . That's the same thing. So

21:34 reading assignments are to help you start ready for that pace of material.

21:42 . So what you're gonna do is gonna read the book in reading what

21:48 expectation is is not for you to notes and spend seven hours reading.

21:53 know I can already see you two going to do that. You're gonna

21:55 like I'm gonna get the book and gonna take notes all night long.

21:59 don't do that. Read the book you're reading a magazine, get a

22:04 of what's going on and what you're to be learning in the next lecture

22:08 make sure that you've read. Because I was a student too and I

22:12 I wouldn't I wouldn't do the reading you made me. So I'm making

22:16 there is a reading assignment and I'm a quiz that comes available before class

22:22 you have to complete. Now these low stakes quizzes, right? If

22:26 decide not to ever do a quiz highest grade you'll ever in the class

22:29 the 90%ile right? So that is , is it the end of your

22:34 if you miss a quiz the one like yes, no no no.

22:39 this strategy here is yes. Do the quiz. Read and do

22:43 quiz. I've asked every class since started signing this book. First day

22:48 class. They all hated the reading it's long and it's hard and scary

22:51 there's big words and there's a little print and blah blah blah by the

22:55 of the semester money. How's the ? Like it's easy why they started

23:00 with £5. They're now up to . Okay. So don't be scared

23:05 it. It's not that terrible. . But the idea here is we're

23:09 reading to absorb information. We're reading understand where it is and to be

23:14 to start introducing ideas to ourselves. right. Like I said 10% of

23:19 final grade. So this is kind what your typical week is gonna look

23:22 for me. Look, I'll be first one to tell you my class

23:25 not the most important class you'll ever . It's not the most important class

23:29 semester. Ah I wish it were it's not how many guys are taking

23:35 least a full load. 15 Each one of those 15 hours is

23:39 important, right? So I'm not have no expectation that my class like

23:45 organic chemists are gonna take over your life. Did I say hello and

23:51 record that too. So that's what kind of looks like. Right?

23:56 your lecture. You read the assignment then the in the case of Tuesday's

24:01 have basically two days to read and your quiz opens up and it stays

24:05 until about noon. It's not really and I think it's noon because we

24:08 one o'clock class and then it closes and then you show up to lecture

24:12 you listen to the lecture that we read about and then we talk about

24:15 stuff that is important and the things you should learn and know and carry

24:18 you. And then the next day do the same thing. We just

24:20 a weekend. I don't expect you study on saturday or friday nights

24:24 Cause come on. Right. And you know the quiz and it's the

24:28 thing over and over again. So is just your general pattern of behavior

24:32 the class. Right? I read come to class I read I come

24:36 class and you'll create this pattern of which will lead to your access in

24:40 long term, not just in my but generally speaking we have this writing

24:46 man writing assignments gotta. Right? mean I got a science because I

24:51 want to write. Right. Isn't right? That's a lot of rights

24:55 a sentence. Isn't that correct? guess what? I got bad news

25:00 you. It's not just scientists that stuff. Everybody writes stuff. Look

25:05 these these are all calls for papers different journals. None of them are

25:10 journals. Alright. My wife is physical therapist. She gets a physical

25:16 therapy journal. She writes notes. job literally is see a patient for

25:20 hour, write a note for two . That is her job.

25:25 It is writing writing, writing, intensive science in general, health professions

25:31 general is lots of writing. So we're doing here is getting you used

25:35 this idea of I need to be to communicate through my writing now your

25:41 lives. You have been used to a paper for your professor,

25:46 If I can use the right language make him feel good about himself for

25:49 , about him herself. She's gonna me a good a or he's gonna

25:53 me a good a that's not how works. Right. Well it does

25:57 some places but it doesn't work for most part. When we write we

26:02 usually writing to an audience, a of people who are gonna be interested

26:08 the subject matter is. So the we do writing here is we are

26:12 to our peers. Alright, so going to do a literature review.

26:17 a whole bunch of topics that are become available right after class and you

26:20 go look up, you can go what the topics are if you like

26:23 join the group, correct each of . I think there's like 20 slots

26:27 each one of them. I think nine topics and there's 130 of

26:31 so plenty of slots. So figure what it is that you're like,

26:34 this sounds interesting to me, sign for that particular slot and now what

26:37 gonna do is you're going to write literature review on whatever that topic happens

26:41 be. So, it's very You don't get to choose your own

26:44 other than through that list. All . And then what you're doing is

26:47 writing to the rest of your In essence on this topic. All

26:52 . It's kind of like writing a article and so you're gonna learn how

26:56 write technically. Alright. You're not be trying to impress me because I

27:00 grade these. Guess who grades You do. That's the peer review

27:06 . Everyone refuse reviews. Five this is completely blind. You will

27:11 know whose paper you're getting and it's to be one of those other

27:14 You can get the same topic. know, papers from people who wrote

27:17 the same material, You can get from other things. This kind of

27:22 people. It's easy mode. I it easy for you guys. I'm

27:26 show you why here in a second . This is like a test grade

27:29 you. It's about 18. It's . Alright. And so this is

27:33 of what it looks like. I to back up because now I'm like

27:36 mode. Alright. So what we're do is uh on september 9th you

27:40 have your topic picked out. So like three weeks. Okay. That's

27:45 , right? And then the following you need to find at least 10

27:50 . Alright, so the instructions are , you'll be able to do

27:52 So that's by the next friday. then each of these stages are going

27:56 be, there's a peer review each of them and literally peer reviews

27:59 no time through this portion. So you get a minimum number of

28:04 and you start writing your discussion outline on the sources that you've already

28:08 and then you start writing your introduction on the materials that you have gathered

28:12 kind of saying, how do I this material? So the idea is

28:15 I'm slowly putting a paper together over and then eventually what I'm gonna have

28:19 I'm gonna start working on my my draft here. So from here to

28:23 you can see we have about a , so you can get that main

28:26 done. Then that goes out to review. You get your results

28:29 you bitch it to me for a while and I say quit worrying about

28:32 , go and make these changes. you'll do some revisions on it and

28:36 you resubmit it and it gets re by all of you guys. And

28:39 the end of that you'll have a . You will see that you go

28:42 here to there. You'll see improvement your writing. You'll be looking at

28:45 people's papers. You'll see, This is how they did it.

28:48 want to kind of do that We're not talking to plagiarism part.

28:51 talking like you're basically using each other help sharpen each other as writers and

28:57 how we become better writers. It's me reading the same paper over and

29:01 again and getting frustrated and wondering why don't drink harder. That's a

29:08 Thank you. All right. So to give you a sense of how

29:11 the weight of these things is. I mean this is based on your

29:15 your final grade. So picking your 5%.5% of your final grade, your

29:21 .5%, then 1%, That first here is 5% of your final grade

29:27 the last draft is worth 9%. if you sum all that up,

29:30 18% of your final grade. All now with all this in mind and

29:33 these deadlines, I need to point here that the software that we use

29:36 is turned it in. And because attached to a peer review. These

29:40 really kind of hard deadlines it's very difficult if you miss an assignment failed

29:45 turn it in on time and there's little bit of leeway there. I'm

29:49 you guys to turn it in like 24 hours or something. But if

29:51 fail them as deadlines you basically lose the points for that section. So

29:55 need to be diligent in getting these done alright but it's not hard in

29:59 way that this is spread out it's a lot of effort in other words

30:03 not like just throwing a paper in lap saying I want by next

30:06 All right you've got time to kind work on it so that's kind of

30:11 scary part of the class but no has complained so much that I've taken

30:15 out. Yeah template. Yeah so you need to know about the writing

30:20 . So again if you go on there is a folder that says writing

30:23 . There are example papers there are I'm you're gonna see I'm a pretty

30:29 person. Would you agree? I'm of talking yeah I have when I

30:33 I write stuff I'm just like that I have like pages of instructions for

30:38 to go through. Anyone here ever Otero no one knows what's Otero raise

30:44 hands high I mean be proud of . Yeah I got Sotero look at

30:47 the other people looking at you who these Sotero is your new friend?

30:52 . Should I tell them Sotero is a way to Dubai biographies in easy

30:58 . Right? And once you find about it and start using your gonna

31:02 why no one ever told you about before. Okay. But I'm just

31:05 let you know. So terra we'll there when it's time. All right

31:10 yes all that's online. Alright so just summarizing here. Don't don't be

31:16 . I see that look on your , you're like I don't know about

31:19 . All right. So just to you a sense of of the grapes

31:23 , you have four exams. Each worth 18%. We have a writing

31:28 that's 18%. If you do the there 18 times five is Oh you

31:35 didn't know there was gonna be Did you 90? So that means

31:39 those uh those assessments you know to that you've done the reading, that's

31:43 of your grade. So not hard everyone asks, is there a

31:48 There's a science class? Every science has a curve, hasn't it?

31:52 . Yeah. Aren't you? Things , thank you. Alright, this

31:56 is really simple. I'm gonna scare with some numbers but don't be

31:59 Right? I shoot for average is 65. So that would be a

32:03 c right at a 65 failing grade 50 in this class so you're like

32:10 right but you know that upper we're not gonna see a lot of

32:13 bumping up to that 100. Usually high grade in the class is around

32:16 to 94. Alright. But that's and it's because it's a curve.

32:20 what I do is I do a distribution. Guys taking statistics who here

32:26 to take Calgary instead. I'm gonna to have a word with the advising

32:34 . Statistics. Statistics what? Oh good good. Statistics is the

32:41 You'll use calculus. You'll never use again in your entire life. I

32:46 . I know it's it's really disappointing hear but it's kind of like taking

32:49 for three semesters you'll never use again when you go to that mexican restaurant

32:53 you're like okay and the guy will at you, it's like dude,

32:58 don't know what you say. It's stats stats is where it's at all

33:03 ? So what we do is we a normalized distribution which means I take

33:06 great. I put it in You know and I figure out where

33:10 curve is. And from once I that curve I figure out where that

33:13 C. Is based on the median then I and determine where the boundaries

33:17 for abc and so on. So I'm talking about a curve, this

33:21 not I'm adding three points to everybody make you all feel a little bit

33:24 . This is not an ego This is to ensure that everyone is

33:28 an equalized distribution in terms of the . Alright. Typically this helps out

33:33 CS. Ds and Fs. And the low bees. Alright. But

33:37 you're in the A. Range curves gonna help you. If you're in

33:40 top B range, they're not particularly . There might be a little

33:44 But for the most part, these the people they help. All

33:47 I'll just let you know right We haven't seen a lot of Fs

33:49 this class in a long time. students get Ws instead, right?

33:54 very rarely do we see these at . So, I think like last

33:59 I might have had three F. not gonna tell you how many w

34:01 have to talk about that. All . So as and Bs. Um

34:06 what we're shooting. We're shooting Everyone's shooting for an A. All

34:10 . Just let you know every semester make the same announcement. It's

34:15 Every semester. If everyone gets an . In the class. I

34:18 you can't draw. There's no w gets an A. In the class

34:21 having a party. I'm gonna I'm a kegger. And even if you

34:25 drink, we'll find something for Alright. No. 32 Semesters.

34:34 . Still waiting. All right. want to throw that party.

34:39 because again, like I said, goals or your goals. I want

34:42 to achieve your goals. I'm not as a gatekeeper? I'm not here

34:45 say no. I don't think you go. I don't think you're

34:48 My job is to help you achieve goals. Part of that is me

34:52 you work harder than you've worked Part of it is me sitting here

34:56 , all right, let's let's kind figure out how to work through this

34:59 . All right. Now, there's some other random stuff on blackboard.

35:03 gonna have some sort of slide here the life of the cell if you've

35:06 seen that. I actually don't think have it for your class. That

35:08 be for another class. So don't about that. But I got these

35:11 folders here. If you're if you're and want to go look at videos

35:14 thought were interesting on one of your from a couple years back. That

35:17 interesting there in those folders. they're not necessary in any way,

35:22 or form. They're just interesting to . So I just told you a

35:27 bunch of stuff and of course I've so you can always go back and

35:30 to it. But there is on at 2 30. That's when our

35:34 ends. Right, Okay. There's an assessment to say, Hey,

35:38 you listen to me? Right. basically asks you, you know some

35:42 the facts like how many tests are . How many tests are there?

35:45 . Okay. See that their check . Right. So that's the type

35:48 thing. And you you can do assessments as many times as you need

35:52 write this one until you get a score on it. So um That's

35:57 I'm shooting for for the other You only get two attempts. You

35:59 the risk assessments. Really? The for that is I want to make

36:02 you read that you didn't ask your what they read. All right.

36:06 , I want you to be able do your own assessments there. All

36:09 . But this one is due on September which is two weeks next

36:15 Okay. Next week. So I that's two weeks really kind of the

36:18 of that Friday. So two All right. Alright. So this

36:22 where we pause. Look at what is it? 1 36.

36:27 so not too bad. Only 36 . I mean normally I go 45

36:32 . This is where you get to me questions about the stuff. I

36:34 told you got questions about the test . Anything else? Yes. So

36:38 before we go and I do see you see the light in my

36:43 I mean I love you guys to up and look straight back cause it's

36:46 it's basically like just light and then so if I can't see you raise

36:51 hand. You might have to move little bit if you're kind of in

36:54 area, okay if I'm over here still can't see. No there we

36:58 . This is where I can start people, so go ahead. Yeah

37:07 no yes, so there won't So on a day of an exam

37:10 obviously there's no reading, a reading always leading to a lecture,

37:15 So so let's just use thursday this . There's gonna be a reading tonight

37:20 thursday's lecture, right? But when have that exam on september 13th there

37:25 no lecture. Ergo there's no reading the 13th of september so did I

37:31 the question? But you don't you have a quiz if there's no

37:36 So quizzes are attached to reading Alright, I'm gonna give you a

37:40 thing here real quick. I hate anyone's taking me has heard me say

37:45 , I don't like grades in grades are are not the best way

37:50 determine qualification they're not right? But there's no better way, it's just

37:58 know, I have to have some of stick to kind of make you

38:01 let's say how many of you would the book? I just read the

38:07 Really? You sure? Because I do it. I have to based

38:12 things on what I would do and not gonna I'm not gonna read

38:15 you got to read this and I have to write because there's a great

38:20 to it you're more inclined to do right? Even if it doesn't seem

38:25 it's fun like I mean how many you like just like doing homework?

38:30 that's what I thought. Right. you know why those online courses like

38:36 know like a cons academy and I don't know if there was like

38:39 . Labs that came out of I. T. And you know

38:41 those things all failed? No one self motivated. 0.3% success rate.

38:49 completion success rates out of those That means three people out of every

38:54 . Right? I know a lot you guys like to work out

38:59 I'm seeing a couple of you guys to exercise the morning. Yeah.

39:02 of us need some sort of incentive get up and exercise. I get

39:06 and exercise because I have a friend have to meet if I don't show

39:10 I'm leaving him in the lurch. right. The rest of us would

39:13 be like forget it. Alright. got one more question and I'll answer

39:17 questions. Does it matter? I'm curious does better though. Do you

39:32 ? I know I know you I know what you guys are.

39:37 not gonna say the word, I'll it later now it is it

39:41 So you have one of those those right? A regular quiz before every

39:48 there's 24 lectures. So there's 24 and then you have the orientation

39:52 The one that we're just this this . So that's one out of

39:57 And that's 10% of your total So, what does that make

40:06 Yeah, I know. That's that's why I'm I'm Yeah. No,

40:13 it's okay. I'm part of I this. Part of the reason I

40:16 this is because your entire life. many guys your entire life? You

40:20 there's only two grades in this And f is that how you been

40:24 ? Yeah. Yeah. I mean I'm gonna break you of that?

40:32 . I'm gonna break you of I want you to achieve the highest

40:34 can achieve, but it's not about grade. If all you're here for

40:37 just to get an a good luck that's not how this class works.

40:43 right. Now, yes. You see metric lee how it's gonna

40:46 But you know how you get good in this class? He learned That's

40:57 , right. You can go through over and over and over again.

41:00 see it time and time again. take a class. You get a

41:03 grade. Take a class. Get grade. Take a class and expects

41:06 to learn something. You don't have baseline on what you're gonna build that

41:09 screwed. Right? This is the where it all changes. All

41:14 You're gonna work hard. You're gonna stuff because I'm not gonna be the

41:18 lying on that table with you and don't know. I took the class

41:22 I didn't read the assignment. I don't wanna be that person.

41:26 I'm training a lot of you guys go into these health professions. I

41:30 to be able to look up to that person right there. That's a

41:32 who I trained and while they may mauling me. You see Klaus

41:39 I have 100% confidence they can do I expected them now. Having said

41:45 . Let's go ahead to your Hmm. Yes. Yeah. And

41:55 the reason for that. All So, if you go and look

41:58 the syllabus, you're gonna see that is something missing from all the stuff

42:03 there that you think should probably be . Now. It'll take you a

42:07 while to do. I just because I teach a class, it's

42:11 , there's no immunology, how much immunology you guys know? How much

42:16 you think? You know I we've been inundated with it for months

42:20 months and months, but you don't , Jack. And I'm And

42:24 that's not a like, you don't . You don't In fact I walk

42:28 my department and I see colleagues of behaving in ways that are incongruent,

42:32 like that word incongruent incongruent with what would expect. People with biological knowledge

42:38 the level of a PhD and it's okay we need to learn some

42:43 And so since immunology is normally of that's taught on its own because it's

42:48 vast and large and scary and It was the first class I learned

42:51 genetics was not the genetics I was . Yeah. I mean this was

42:56 before epa genetics was a thing for . Yeah. It was like what

43:00 ? Not all cells have the same . N. A. That was

43:03 first thing. Yeah I learned that I was like no no that can't

43:07 be true. And that was when whole world was blown open. It

43:10 just like no I don't know anything the purpose of that is to kind

43:15 explore an aspect of immunology that you be interested. I know many of

43:20 are gonna go right to viruses. know that's gonna be the case.

43:24 . Only 20 slots. So just you know. All right. Another

43:29 anyway. Yeah go ahead then we'll over here. Uh No it's just

43:40 . Yeah. Because the one thing hate is repeating myself. You know

43:44 I hate? That's right. I . I actually do. I have

43:50 kids. So I do it a . And uh yeah you're gonna find

43:54 . I might as well tell you I've got two sets of twins.

43:56 it's even there's a lot of repeating my family. My wife is also

44:01 twin, Her sister who's not her also had twins. Oh, and

44:08 a reproductive physiologist. Just kick me the teeth. Right. Anyway.

44:14 . So no, it's just So the reason for that is I

44:16 like getting those emails that say, , how many tests do we have

44:19 can I drop this test or it's kind of to nip that in

44:23 butt. Yeah. Um, so writing center is unnecessary for the

44:31 There used to be a time where required going to the writing center and

44:34 , but we don't do that Or the topics they'll become available I

44:37 right after class at 2 30. . Um, I don't know where

44:44 was gonna go. There was something was gonna say, but I lost

44:46 and it was funny, but you're miss out. So All right,

44:50 let's just deal with this last little here, which will probably take us

44:54 rest of class. I apologize that I am a verbose, so 80%

44:59 the time I spend in my if there's no other questions about,

45:03 , go ahead. Yeah. So the Syllabus actually show you a historical

45:13 and that's again, that's based on over 32 semesters, so it's not

45:18 be true for a semester, but gonna be pretty close. Right?

45:24 fair, fair question. Anyone Yeah. Yeah. So blackboard sucks

45:33 I say that already? Okay so repeating myself. So so if you

45:37 a topic you're like yeah this I don't like it. Just email

45:40 and I'll drop you from, you if you join two groups by accident

45:44 three groups, please don't do You know email me and I'll drop

45:47 from the group that you're not interested . That frees up the slot for

45:50 else, right? But I would you not to drop a group and

45:54 join a group in in the event that group is unavailable. So you

45:58 , but just email me. Any other any others. All

46:04 So let's get into the bit down the weeks. Alright? So I've

46:08 teaching this class for um like 32 almost. This will be my 16th

46:13 actually. This is the end of 15th year, 16th year really kind

46:16 begins in january for me. Um in the time that I've been

46:21 most of my office hours are spent the one question of dr wayne.

46:26 always been an a student, why I getting a C. In your

46:30 ? Right? And I'm not saying to scare you. I really am

46:33 . Alright because there's an answer to and really that answer boils down to

46:38 you have never been taught in your lives. If you think about

46:41 go back all the way back to you were walking up with a little

46:45 pail up into kindergarten and your mom that first picture of you and no

46:49 had ever taught you how to right? No one's ever sat you

46:53 and said, the way to learn is to do blank. Right?

46:59 so your entire academic career is basically and air until something works in that

47:05 class and then you stick with it hopefully you have enough time to maintain

47:09 good grade, right? Or what do is you end up with this

47:13 grade that you can hopefully work your out of. Right? Like think

47:17 organic chemistry, how many guys, was your like favorite class ever?

47:21 person. Two people, right? rest of us are sitting there

47:24 I remember that first test and that test came through and I was wondering

47:28 I had made a wrong choice and I wasn't going to law school,

47:33 ? And the reason is because no ever taught us how to deal with

47:36 question of dealing with organic chemistry and relish it over in the chemistry

47:41 Like I am the keeper of the and you shall never have it.

47:46 I will make fun of these people the day they die because the purpose

47:49 these types of courses is to make material accessible to you all right.

47:58 80% of my time is spent answering question doing it one on one and

48:03 got tired of it. So about years ago, seven years ago I

48:06 , hey, you know what I'm do for the first day of

48:07 I'm gonna give everybody the lecture, give them one on one. And

48:11 that's what we're gonna talk about is to study and be successful in any

48:15 that you ever take, except for organic. That one is just a

48:18 to everybody. All right. what I want you to do is

48:23 want you to look up here and up here on the left side.

48:25 , and see that on the We got two graphs up here.

48:28 graphs have a name to them. called the Ebbing House forgetting curve.

48:33 you regret sitting up here? The House forgetting curve literally is a device

48:40 demonstrates how well we retain information when a piece of information. And

48:45 this is a random uh picture I off the internet. I mean it

48:49 be for any piece of information but I said like I gave you a

48:52 digit number and said, I want remember the six digit number I gave

48:55 to you over time. You would that your ability to remember that number

48:59 decrease over time and you can see this scale it's going from time 0

49:04 31 days. So basically a how much time do we have between

49:08 exam? Mhm. We have basically weeks or six classes or almost a

49:17 . You see we're doing a lot funny business with the numbers. Now

49:22 , this is not a real But you can see here says,

49:24 , if I give you that six number, 16 digit number in 30

49:28 , you would be able to remember of it or what we can say

49:31 if we asked 100 people how many remember it completely? It would be

49:35 21%. You can kind of do one way or the other. So

49:38 really kind of shows you is if waited, if I took that piece

49:40 information and I waited 31 days to it. There's a chance that I'd

49:46 to say that I wouldn't recall I'd have to teach myself that

49:50 That's what that says. So now apply this to actual information that we're

49:55 . We're learning not one thing in , we're learning lots of things in

50:00 and we repeat this over and over for a period of six courses and

50:04 we say tell us everything that you and memorized. But if you've never

50:08 back and looked at it, each of those pieces of information have decayed

50:13 that same sort of curve. So you are, the night before the

50:17 and that first piece of information is 21%. So in essence you now

50:21 to learn 80% of that material all your own? The night before the

50:28 , which means we have to cram is never successful. Have you noticed

50:33 is never successful? It's kind it's successful enough to keep me

50:36 but not enough to like woo I'm a champion. All right,

50:42 could accomplish the same thing if you never come to class and you just

50:48 till the end of the semester and yourself the exact same thing, How

50:53 guys do that stop coming to You can raise your hand. It's

51:00 . We're gonna look back in about weeks, we're gonna look around the

51:05 and see how many people show Alright. And you can teach yourself

51:09 same stuff, but there's something you do to prevent that from happening and

51:18 basically interrupting the cycle. Here's the curve, Right? And it

51:25 look, if I interrupt the cycle I'm still on the forgetting side because

51:29 gonna be a natural decay. But I go back and do a little

51:32 of practice, I can bring myself to 100% learned. And that decay

51:40 it still occurs is a lot less . And then if I practice

51:46 I can prevent the decay again and slows down the decay. So when

51:50 gets down time to prepare for an or to demonstrate that I have

51:54 I've got a lot less work to , wait a second doctor. When

52:00 you telling me that if I practice , I'll get better at something.

52:05 , athletes figured this out a long ago. You'd think that the spark

52:10 would have figured it out too. no, we don't, we just

52:13 there and go, no, I don't like studying because do we

52:15 studying? No, I like It's hard, it makes me feel

52:21 . It makes me feel stupid and I don't like myself and then I

52:24 bad about myself and I want to under a hole and please don't talk

52:27 me and I should have gone to school? No, wow studying and

52:35 proficient in a field is simply a of managing your time and organizing

52:42 That's all it is. There is special smartness you need to have in

52:47 to be successful. It's just being at organizing yourself and making sure you

52:52 things regularly. That's all it If I want to become strong,

52:56 work out on a regular basis. I want to become wise or have

53:00 of knowledge about something, I just it over and over and over and

53:03 again. How many guys play instruments you proficient do you practice regularly?

53:12 ? Okay. Anyone else? I some hands over here? Yeah.

53:17 practice it regularly. Yeah. Are good? Could you stop practicing?

53:25 . But when you did it, you good? Yeah, I

53:29 even my daughter who is not particularly , she plays the marimba. She's

53:34 . She's not particularly good. But she practices she's really good. When

53:38 blows things off, which is she does the opposite of this.

53:42 not that good. My son who regularly plays euphonium, he's really

53:48 Alright. I got two other kids are about to be in a

53:50 It's gonna be a really loud house , three brass instruments. I'm not

53:54 pleased. All right. So so the way to study is not

53:59 the last minute, it's to interrupt cycle. So what I'm gonna suggest

54:04 to do is to do something that gonna feel uncomfortable at first, just

54:08 working out does it always feels uncomfortable first when you start up. But

54:12 you start doing it regularly becomes a pattern in your life. And when

54:15 start doing this, you're gonna find you spend less time that sound

54:20 Less time studying. More time learning you learn more get better grades.

54:29 it's a trifecta less time studying. learning better grades. Sound good.

54:34 do I know this works? one I see grades go up when

54:37 do it, but to I always emails back from students who have done

54:39 gun on a professional and they say a third year student, I've done

54:42 you told me to do, and kicking but I'm beating everybody in my

54:47 , and I'm like, yeah, right. So, first off four

54:53 , you read the book that gives knowledge pre knowledge going in, so

54:56 basically have a great understanding of what's on. All right, after

55:00 you've been inundated with exactly what you to learn. So what you're gonna

55:03 is you're gonna sit down and you're take that information and you're gonna organize

55:07 yourself, put it in your own , organized in such a way that

55:10 makes sense to you, because if studying off my notes, you're using

55:15 notes to myself to help remind me it is I need to talk

55:19 So, you need to make your notes to yourself to remind you of

55:22 you're trying to learn. That's gonna the first step, alright? You

55:27 don't want to understudy are over but dr William, how do I

55:30 what to study? I don't know to study because that's a scary thing

55:33 there in the classroom. Like, don't know what to study.

55:35 very simple when I walk into First thing today, we're gonna learn

55:38 blank. So you walk out of classroom, what did what should you

55:42 yourself? Did I learn blank? if you can answer that question,

55:49 you know what you need to and if you can answer that

55:52 one of two things happened. Either failed. Which is a possibility but

55:56 likely. I mean, I do but probably not in this because I've

56:00 it so many times, right? maybe you stop paying attention. And

56:05 face it, me talking for an and 20 minutes is tough. I

56:11 I used to sit in your I know where I said the back

56:14 back there and I fell asleep in single one of my classes. And

56:18 , here I am. All So what you wanna do is you

56:22 to basically not over study overstayed. all done that right. Where you're

56:25 ? You study study study way too . You're gonna take this like really

56:29 this? That was easy understanding. you're going to test your like this

56:33 in the class? Yeah. That's the wrong direction. Alright.

56:38 before class is really, it's a step right before class you read,

56:41 take you don't necessarily to take notes you have time. If you're fast

56:44 this, you should really be reading terms of like for for identifying where

56:50 is Alright. During class you show and you pay attention. There's a

56:53 high, high correlation between attendance to and uh performance and of course.

57:00 right. Do you notice how your suck during online classes even? No

57:06 how hard you tried. You it just it just didn't work.

57:09 part of it is because when people feeding us information, it's really

57:12 But when I sit here and I , hey, um this is sea

57:16 and I'm Shamu and you guys are splash zone and I start pulling you

57:18 up to do stuff. These people going, I'm so glad I'm not

57:21 in the front row. But I when Dr Wayne did this,

57:26 You're gonna remember stupid stuff I And I do a lot of stupid

57:30 . All right. You're gonna You're gonna attach thoughts and ideas to

57:34 that you experience. That's where the comes in. Alright? So show

57:39 . Pay attention lastly, is after when it's all fresh in your

57:42 Remember that ebbing house curve. That's you sit down and you organize your

57:46 . What did I learn today? gonna be fresh in your brain so

57:49 can sit down and start writing this and it's gonna make him sense to

57:53 , right? If you wait for days. If you wait for that

57:57 . I mean, you may have wait that night for every moment you

58:00 . You're gonna lose some of that . It means you're gonna have to

58:03 harder to retain it. And if wait until the last minute you're teaching

58:07 to yourself and you might as well come. All right. And if

58:11 practice questions, you want to be to do those as well. We

58:15 have a practice question in the Now this is this is a junior

58:20 level class, we'll have practice exam but we don't have homeworks, which

58:24 really what that kind of refers Yeah. And those will become available

58:30 the last day of class, right the exam. Yeah. So how

58:35 we do this? All right. basically what you wanna do is

58:37 when you create your notes, you to identify the topics and really what

58:40 got to look for is if you think of your notes, right?

58:43 being a series of learning objectives, the term that we use as as

58:47 educator learning objective, simply as the I need to learn. Right?

58:51 so there you can think of is , what are the different topics?

58:54 so when I'm giving a lec what should be looking for or when does

58:57 transition from one idea to the It doesn't matter what class, I'm

59:01 talking about my class, but it be a history class, it could

59:04 a language class anytime you see someone , I'm talking about X and now

59:08 now talking about why when I see pivot, I've now moved into a

59:12 learning objective and you can actually identify and just kind of little mark on

59:16 slide. So for example, if was doing the digestive system, I'd

59:19 today, we're gonna talk about the your system. So you should know

59:22 you walk out of the classroom, going to talk about the or learn

59:24 the digestive system. The digestive system at the mouth and ends at the

59:30 . Okay, well, there's a and so it basically goes from the

59:33 to the esophagus, esophagus, to stomach, stomach to the small

59:37 large intestine and down to the That's where you are. And then

59:40 some accessory organs and all of a you're like, wait a second.

59:43 see what we got here. We've a mouth. That's one thing we

59:46 an esophagus. That's another thing we a stomach. That's another thing.

59:49 got a small intestine. We've got large intestine. We've got all these

59:52 on the side. Wow, those the topics I have to know.

59:56 so, you know, that's the that you're going to be organizing.

59:59 right now, the good news, don't have to know any of that

60:01 today. Right? But do you how I'm showing you those transitions.

60:05 like something different Must be happening. you see something named differently, it

60:09 be different. Right? An epidermis dermis are different. Why? Because

60:16 named differently now because they have features are different, But you name them

60:20 . So that you can distinguish between two things. All right, If

60:25 ever get lost, understand what we're with this physiology. There's some anatomy

60:30 here as well. But anatomy and , this makes your life easy.

60:34 basically structure function. So, if like, I don't know what I'm

60:38 , just ask the question what what are involved. So what's the anatomy

60:42 what are they doing if you open the hood of a car and I

60:45 pointing around saying this is this and is this, this is this and

60:48 is what it does. You might like, oh, that's scary.

60:50 if you start writing this stuff you're like, oh, so what's

60:53 thing that allows the gas to go here to there? What's this?

60:57 you'll be able to see that its , Right? That's the structure that

61:00 that to occur. That's the So that's kind of how you're approaching

61:04 material. Again, we're not gonna you in the deep end, We're

61:07 to ease our way into this And we're gonna see some patterns very

61:12 on. So you're gonna see the unit is gonna build or give you

61:16 of a baseline to understand everything that gonna need to know. Looking at

61:19 system we're looking at later and there things that are shared from system to

61:22 system. So each lecture you can of structurally is a bunch of sub

61:30 , right? So digest system all different structures. And then each of

61:35 have some unique details that are associated them, right? And that's what

61:40 looking for. What are those descriptive make one thing unique from something

61:43 Once you identify that, you know to study most of you. When

61:47 study, if you think about you have. Here's the big

61:50 Here's the sub topics below and then are the details down below. You

61:54 spend all your time down here right? You don't understand the connections

61:59 stuff. Turn it upside down. what's the big picture? What are

62:04 things that are dependent upon that big ? What do these details mean relative

62:09 that subtopic? Oh, I can now why this and this are important

62:14 understanding this idea because now you're connecting alright. You work in a direction

62:21 the details. You don't stay at details. All right. You want

62:25 build your knowledge towards that. I that kind of didn't make a lot

62:30 sense, but we'll see this here just a second. All right.

62:33 some of the things you do is don't alright ever done this to a

62:36 . Yeah, highlighters are not You know, color guys to show

62:41 what you read. You know, are there to highlight to pull out

62:45 to look at. Um If you a coloring book, there are anatomy

62:48 books. They're actually kind of Um You know. Anyway, so

62:53 know when you're reading stuff, remember you're trying to do is you're trying

62:56 pull information out that's important, You don't want to rewrite everything you

63:00 from your notes or from your You just want the important information.

63:04 . Uh, don't write everything using language that's in the book. Use

63:08 own language to explain stuff. You're see that when I talk and try

63:11 explain things to you, I'm gonna to relate ideas to you.

63:14 when I talk about the cardiovascular system talk about arteries and veins, I'm

63:18 talk about traffic in Houston because we're familiar with traffic in Houston, aren't

63:23 ? Right. You understand highways? happens when there's too much going on

63:27 the highway? What happens? Guess ? You know what happens in the

63:31 system too as a result of your of Houston traffic. So use things

63:38 examples to help you understand something, able to explain things to yourself.

63:43 if you're in study groups, find to explain things to other people.

63:46 you're in a study group, you to listen, you learn to talk

63:49 ? You don't just sit there and memorize stuff, learn how to explain

63:53 and this is the way I always it. It's not meant to be

63:56 any way shape or form. I to be able to explain something so

63:59 my mother could understand it. My mother has two masters degree but

64:02 never took a lick of biology and had to explain to her what I

64:06 doing when I was in grad So when you're sitting there trying to

64:09 molecular biology to somebody who's smart but never taken the class, you gotta

64:13 out a way to explain stuff and kind of what you're doing,

64:16 That's why it's not insulting. Is mom may never have a bad or

64:20 not have a background in this, if you could explain it to

64:23 you're in the right place. Anyone gone grocery shopping with the list.

64:29 , when you write your list, make full sentences, grammar check

64:33 No. Right. So remember when doing your notes, abbreviations and

64:40 even if you're not an artist or friends. Alright, we say this

64:44 this is about efficiency and time. right, it is, your job

64:48 not to be a medical illustrator. if you're planning on that in the

64:52 , awesome. But for the class for the purpose of learning something,

64:55 just need to have a quick um understanding of what it is that you're

64:59 , you don't go to the grocery and say I need to buy cheddar

65:03 right? You just put cheese when get to the road you're like

65:06 I know it's cheddar. Now if a special, you know like cheese

65:09 you're buying for the first time you put more detail. So if you're

65:13 something for the first time you might a little bit of extra detail.

65:16 if you keep it simple, that's jog your memory because you've already put

65:20 there. So don't sit there and a lot of time creating flowery beautiful

65:25 . Ladies, I'm talking to you a second. You don't need eight

65:28 . Now if you like eight I'm not gonna tell you to

65:31 I just know the guys don't use colors. They can barely read their

65:34 handwriting. All right. I'm not it's wrong. I'm saying if you

65:39 to be efficient, figure out ways become efficient. All right. Now

65:45 came from a different generation when I to college. This is what college

65:48 all about. All right. So you are studying don't be unfocused.

65:56 , When I say I'm focused, many of you have ever done this

65:58 you sat down? Um And you I'm gonna study right now, you

66:02 down and use it for like 10 minutes and you can kind of

66:05 that Antoninus. You're like, I do this and you go to the

66:08 and clean the bathroom because it is mess, you've never cleaned it,

66:11 pull out that toothbrush, you get the toilet because you know, since

66:13 building has been built and no one's cleaned behind there and right now at

66:16 very moment it is something that you live with. Have you ever done

66:21 ? Yeah. See everyone's not in head may not have been the

66:24 might have been the kitchen, And what you're gonna do is you're

66:27 find different things to do over and again to avoid the study and finally

66:30 two hours or so, you're gonna sit down and study and you're gonna

66:33 for another 10 minutes and you're gonna like, you're gonna get on whatever

66:36 social media and you're gonna say I've studying for 2.5 hours and that's not

66:44 , Right? You've only been studying minutes. So be truthful into your

66:50 of your activity. If you don't , it doesn't matter if you sat

66:54 staring at the ceiling or if you've the bathroom or you took a road

66:59 to Mexico, the result is gonna the same thing. You just have

67:02 stories. If you have road trips Mexico. Right? So if you're

67:07 go down in flames make it Right? The worst, worst story

67:12 can have is I failed this class I clean the bathroom. All

67:17 So if you're gonna be unfocused being , but when you're focused do

67:23 when you say you're gonna study, it. If you can only sit

67:25 20 minutes then just commit yourself to 20 minutes I swear to you.

67:30 what I did when I was in school for the first semester I said

67:33 going to limit myself to 30 minutes I have a social life and I'm

67:36 giving that up. So 30 minutes would just dive in deep and I

67:41 this is like the first time I studied to be to be truthful,

67:44 ? And I'll just sit there for minutes. And that was enough for

67:47 the stuff that I was doing at time. All right. If you

67:51 your time well and your time you open yourself up to do the

67:55 things in life that you're now leaving . So if you want a social

68:00 , how many guys have given up social life because you're pursuing a career

68:04 medicine, right? All I gotta gotta study. It's not about studying

68:09 , it's about studying better, You can have a social life once

68:13 figured out how to study in grad , it was just a block of

68:17 that I set aside, just like . Not that I did that in

68:20 school, right? It's just a of time. You set aside and

68:24 you create a block for social life you create a block for sleeping and

68:27 create a block for eating and even showers and stuff, right? You

68:32 learn how to manage the time so you can get all the things you

68:36 in life to be able to do and you're not gonna be able to

68:40 everything. But by managing things, gonna become better at doing all the

68:44 that you want to do when you to class, don't come to class

68:49 , I didn't learn anything and I understand stuff. I'm just gonna sit

68:52 quietly and hopefully someday I might get . Ask questions. If you already

68:57 the material, you wouldn't have to the class now. Would you?

69:02 you ever thought about that? You are coming in here as blank

69:05 . Some of you have a little more knowledge than others, but the

69:08 is is not none of you that of you haven't learned your physiology

69:11 So when you come into class and read something and it doesn't make any

69:14 to you. If I said you're looking at me like a deer

69:17 the headlights. Put that hand I mean, look at it.

69:20 , he's the hero. She's freaking . All right. He's the hero

69:25 everyone else is gonna get the answer the question. So, if you

69:28 a question, I can guarantee you other people in this classroom already have

69:31 same question. So ask the So I'm sorry. I don't understand

69:35 . And even if I just explained , I don't mind repeating myself.

69:39 I explain it a different way to you better understand it, right?

69:43 my job. My job is to you understand it. All right.

69:47 you're gonna see I love this stuff get excited about. And I get

69:51 and I go, I want to you like that as well. I

69:54 you to look at it. It's like chemistry. All right. If

69:59 have something out of class, you email me If it's a simple

70:03 If it's more complex, come by see me, I'm not gonna sit

70:05 and make fun of you go, stupid. I don't How do you

70:08 get that? Come on. That's you have professors that do that,

70:13 me know, I'll take them out it's not right. All right.

70:21 , after each class, you're basically you leave this space, remember what

70:24 said is you're already starting to So, this is when you sit

70:28 and what you want to do is 30 minutes to an hour. However

70:30 it takes you to start understanding and that information that you just learned organize

70:35 ideas, right? So, if do this right after class, that's

70:38 best opportunity. Every moment that you , it's gonna is you losing

70:44 And again, if you have to , let's say you have a class

70:47 after this and you have to sprint campus. That's fine. That's

70:50 But don't wait till like tomorrow or or two weeks from now or

70:55 You're gonna lose out on that opportunity you're going to force yourself to work

70:59 for something. You didn't have to so hard for All right.

71:03 this is kind of a review process you to do that ending house

71:07 And then what you're doing is you're preparing the material that you're gonna use

71:10 study for the exam. Yeah. don't use flash cards. I'll tell

71:20 what I'm gonna show you. I'm I'm gonna show you the method

71:22 You know, I feel like I'm infomercial. You have to tell me

71:25 time it is. Good luck. we're getting close. I got 10

71:37 . I'm gonna show you here. . Yeah. So this is what

71:41 is. All right. What you do, whether you do a study

71:45 ? I could talk about study I don't wanna do that today because

71:48 limited in time. Maybe I can back to it. But what you

71:51 do is you want to create your notes? So, remember you have

71:53 20 to 30 slides per lecture. many lectures do we have between exams

71:58 ? So, that's about 100 and slides. All right. What you

72:02 do is you want to condense each to about two or three pages of

72:04 . You organized in your own your own organization, so that you

72:08 mastery and understanding of that material. . Let me ask you a simple

72:11 , which would you rather study 202 slides or 18 pages of notes?

72:17 there a difference between the 2? , it's like a pound of lead

72:21 a pound of feathers. Right. amount of information. But already your

72:25 has told you this is easier. see what we've done. Just like

72:29 say what doesn't a pound of feathers less than a pound of lead because

72:32 brain knows feathers are lighter. But a quantity issue. Right?

72:36 what we're dealing with here is by your notes that you now have a

72:41 of notes that you can actually read look at. But I'm gonna tell

72:44 right now. Do not read your . What I heard that what it's

72:50 . It's too good to be Now, what you wanna do is

72:53 wanna take those notes? You want set them aside so you can't look

72:55 them, turn them upside down. look at them. All right.

72:59 the goal here is to remember Alright? Your notes are like your

73:05 . Except you're not You're not trying guess what the questions are gonna be

73:08 all the information that you're gonna be on is right there in those

73:11 blank piece of paper. Worst thing the world. Right? Blank

73:15 What do you put on blank The first thing my name.

73:19 because at least it's not blank. got something down there. Right.

73:23 what you do is that blank piece paper you say? All right.

73:24 was that first lecture about? What the topics? What was it I

73:28 to learn now let me see. is that organization? What was the

73:32 I wrote out? Okay. What the details that help me understand

73:35 And what you do is you start those notes from scratch. All

73:38 You're the first lecture. 2nd All the way through the sixth lecture

73:42 you're done doing that. Take your notes, your fresh notes. The

73:44 notes put them side by side and doing a comparison everything you wrote

73:48 That's in that new set of notes something you know, pat yourself on

73:53 back anything you didn't write down or down incorrectly. Something you don't

73:57 That's something you're gonna miss on the . Alright. So what do I

74:01 ? Do I panic quit now? I'm gonna do is for everything I

74:06 write down, I'm gonna correct my by writing it down. Anything I

74:10 down incorrectly, scratch it out and it. The reason I use say

74:14 and don't type because every time you a muscle requires your brain to

74:19 you can't write without your brain focusing making those muscles move. And so

74:23 you're sitting there, your brain works 10 to 100,000 times faster than your

74:28 actually move. And so while you're there, let's just say, you're

74:30 to write down the quick brown fox over the lazy dog, right your

74:34 , your in your brain, you're the quick brown fox, Quick brown

74:36 , Quick Fox, it's a it's brown, Come on Fox,

74:40 , Fox X. And your hands there going quick. So you're doing

74:46 and tons and tons of repetition without knowing it. All right, the

74:51 time you do this, it's gonna terrible. 5% you get correct,

74:54 after you correct, it take a break, do it again. 20%

74:59 time you do it, 40%. time you do it, 80%.

75:02 time you do it 90% and 95 keep doing this over and over and

75:06 again. However many times you need some of it's gonna be four,

75:09 gonna be eight times, depends on you are and how well you've

75:12 But what you're gonna find is at certain point, you're gonna be able

75:15 recreate your notes from scratch and guess ? There's no question on this earth

75:19 I could ask you, based on notes that you're gonna get wrong because

75:23 already learned everything that you need to , you're gonna spend less time studying

75:32 time learning because you've organized everything you , you're gonna be there's gonna be

75:37 when you're gonna look at your notes go, oh I get it

75:41 I understand. These are no longer words on a page. They actually

75:45 things to me and you're gonna start appreciating what it is that you're

75:52 So you do this and you can like three or four days before the

75:56 , right? A couple, one , a couple, another night,

75:58 couple of other night. Next thing know, it's like, oh,

76:00 know it all. You're gonna be person. You've seen that person in

76:02 at casa, right? The guy the pencil, right? And they're

76:07 like, I can't believe I have be here, right? And you're

76:11 there going through your notes like If I just read them faster.

76:15 hello, stick now. Not before , go to bed early. I

76:20 early, like a decent hour. many of you guys would look forward

76:23 where you're not pounding Red Bull and drinks in that desperate attempt to cram

76:28 that information in your brain, do I just told you you can

76:32 it's 11 o'clock. I started doing in grad school. I figured this

76:36 in grad school every night became a night. Imagine that going before a

76:40 exam, Normal night going out over little Woodrow, having a couple of

76:45 , shooting some pool and then going next day and get an A on

76:49 biochem exam, minimal effort. Because you're learning the information, decent

76:58 . Don't panic. It's just a . It's not your life, you're

77:02 being judged. It's just asking the , Did you learn the information

77:09 Celebrate? It's over. Even if do poorly celebrate who crashed and

77:18 Do I have like three minutes? have no minutes? Alright.

77:22 We're almost done here. I can there's desperation these people out in the

77:26 going but I want to get Alright, multiple choice exams. You

77:30 fear them there the rest of your . You need to know how to

77:33 them. When you take a multiple exam. You started question number

77:36 you read the question. If you the answer off the top of your

77:39 , you answer it. If it you to think for more than a

77:43 . You move on word. The of the sky is blue. That's

77:48 . If you look at it says color of the sky and you go

77:49 the list, you don't see You go wait, I'm not gonna

77:52 with this question right now because there something fishy going on. It's a

77:56 level question. It's a blooms thing we're not going to go into.

78:00 you go through the entire exam 50 you'll probably get through about a quarter

78:05 the exam and you're probably doing about minutes answering all those questions that kind

78:09 pad the grade right? Then you back to that first question. Its

78:12 the sky is you said it's blue you go through the list and you

78:15 something like corn flour. All the go, I know the answer to

78:19 . All the guys are still scratching heads trying to figure it out.

78:23 know we only know like eight how many colors Roy G biv,

78:27 seven. So there's another kind of , you know black too. Alright

78:31 you kind of go through it, like what you're doing now, you're

78:34 with not a knowledge thing but you're to connect ideas together and so what

78:40 do is each time you work through you're you're grinding down the more and

78:43 difficult questions when you get to that where you're doing eliminations, you know

78:48 those eliminations down. If you still answer it, just leave it and

78:50 back eventually. You'll get down to last little bit of your of your

78:54 where there might be two questions and like I don't know it's either a

78:57 at sea and I can't tell it's just don't know the answer and what

79:01 do, what do you do at point? What's that flip a

79:06 That's that's that's that's fair a better is to make an educated guess.

79:12 mean there's gonna be those times where really is like I can't make an

79:15 guess here flipping the corn is just , you can do that for one

79:18 two questions, right? You can't that for 16, right? But

79:23 the trick, A lot of people fearful when they get to this last

79:26 of checking your exam. Alright, this is the last little bit

79:30 When you check your exam, what wanna do is you want to look

79:33 see if the question the answer go , does it make a true

79:38 Because that's ultimately what a multiple choice is is can you make a complete

79:41 statement If the color of the sky blue, if you go through your

79:45 and you see the color of the is green, you're gonna know it's

79:47 , right? I mean that's Now, remember you took the

79:51 you were sitting in the class, learn about cloud, you learn about

79:54 , you learn about that freaky day the sun sets down over the ocean

79:58 it's at that perfect angle to create green sky for a brief second,

80:02 know? And so there are times you're just looking if you look at

80:06 question, all the answers your brain gonna sit there and try to figure

80:08 ways to jam answers into an which is why most of us are

80:12 to death of answering or going back checking our test because if I

80:16 the color of the sky is I've yeah, that's the cloud

80:19 the color of the sky is Maybe he's trying to trick me.

80:21 color of the sky is red. there's a sunset question. The color

80:24 sky is green. Oh yeah, talked about that weird thing in class

80:26 the sunset thing and you're gonna try find ways to shove that question

80:31 But as I said, if you look at the question of your answer

80:34 gonna be clear what what whether or you got it right or wrong.

80:38 that's how you do look at the , look at your answer. If

80:40 makes a true statement, leave it . If it makes a false statement

80:44 you go back and then you correct by going through all the answers

80:50 We're gonna start up here on We're gonna show you how much you

80:55 know about physiology, We're gonna use as a springboard into the rest of

81:00 fun stuff. You guys have a day. Thank you. Thank you

81:05 being my clock. Yes. it's stupid. That's right because I

81:16 to call this lecture zero which got confusing. So I finally moved

81:20 This is lecture one, so next
