00:01 Hello folks. Welcome. I Uh, you don't know me.

00:07 have. This is my millionth time this course. So which means I've

00:12 here a while. All right. , so what today? Today is

00:20 of like this. Look at this uh, your first day at

00:24 right? When you do the first of work, you fill out your

00:28 to get your direct deposit, you a bathroom and the kitchen is at

00:32 that's all we're gonna do. So is kind of just an overview of

00:36 email twice now and so hopefully you've through the syllabus. Uh, that's

00:44 some degree. If not, uh, I'll just highlight some of

00:48 things here. Reiterate some things I in the email. Uh, any

00:53 let me know. Okay. let's see. So again with my

00:59 is in, uh, if you lab that STL building over that way

01:07 I'm on the second floor all the at the end. Okay.

01:11 I do have office hours. They be, uh, teams, but

01:16 not tired too that it's not just , but you can, there's a

01:20 you can access on a blackboard, , starting next week. We'll have

01:26 hours. Um, but you can in person to, okay, come

01:29 person. It's all first come first . Um, so you have both

01:34 options. Okay. Um, let's back in the course. So it's

01:40 . So there shouldn't be any issues you want to, if you're in

01:43 , you haven't rolled. Go Okay. So you can just do

01:47 yourself. you have until next Tuesday not we're not anywhere near the cap

01:53 cap in here so there's plenty of . Uh See you're gonna see some

01:59 of random Don't there's there's a reason that. Okay, so just bear

02:08 me. Okay you'll see um last last of course 2021, you don't

02:17 to take it concurrently. OK um if you take the lab you have

02:23 have have credit for the legs or rolled concurrently. OK. Uh labs

02:31 all labs in the department fill up . Okay. So but we do

02:36 this lab every semester, so we're able to get in this semester,

02:39 will be offered in the summer, and fall. Okay? Um And

02:45 no lab this week. They begin week. Okay. Um So that

02:51 going to be essential as you've already , although I think there were three

02:57 that I got bounced back because some . Okay, so typically it's

03:02 you type all your emails into one and sometimes it was like gmail or

03:08 that may block you. H. mails. So whatever the issue

03:12 get that straightened out because I do emails twice to emails a week telling

03:18 , here's what's coming up, here's going on. Uh two days blah

03:22 blah. Okay so that happens pretty every monday and every thursday or

03:27 Okay, there might be other things sent out that may be relevant.

03:34 the point is get your email things out. If you haven't gotten my

03:38 , I sent one out last thursday think I sent one out yesterday.

03:43 course if you just enrolled in the that's understand whether you wouldn't get the

03:47 but if you've been enrolled in the for a while and you haven't seen

03:50 emails from me then make sure you that checked out. Okay uh email

03:57 please please put 23 21 in the line. Don't just say microbiology

04:06 Um because I also had according to as well so just in even more

04:12 is probably to put I mean you're Wednesday. I mean I'm sorry I

04:16 your 11 30 arm in your four class so I can differentiate.

04:21 So just let the minimum do that after I respond fairly quickly during the

04:27 , monday. Through friday. Um not so fast on weekends.

04:33 if at all um the but but it's been 48 hours during the week

04:39 haven't heard anything it's probably something's not because I do respond during the week

04:44 quickly. Okay so again it may an email issue. Alright so make

04:49 to check it out you want to able to get email communication with

04:53 Okay. Alright syllabus so yeah it's syllabus has gotten ridiculously long because we

05:03 to put in a bunch of um on policies for this and that we

05:07 okay and departmental e there's stuff we to have so it's gotten very

05:14 it's like 20 pages. Okay. just use the table of contents to

05:20 you have pretty much any question you have about this course in terms of

05:26 or absences is going to be Trust me. Okay, So just

05:31 a quick reference, just use the of contents and bam you get where

05:34 need to. Okay um the so if you haven't already maybe kind

05:43 navigated around, uh let me just you real quick because you know the

05:50 I'm telling you going, okay, is ridiculous. Why is he telling

05:52 this? It's because during the semester get the questions from students going,

05:57 is this and that? And I well it's on blackboard so let me

06:01 give you a it was at that here. Yeah, so here's the

06:07 of course. Okay, so just your own sink, right? Just

06:12 , click on everything so you know stuff is that? Okay? I

06:16 it's logically organized. So here is marriage, your link, just click

06:20 that and bam and other officers and be like I said put it away

06:26 but there's no there's no way you just come out, right, but

06:29 may have to wait for somebody. this way turning point information, we'll

06:35 about that shortly. These are the it's called point solutions, chinese web

06:42 . Well, some people still use handheld clippers I think. Um,

06:46 everything you want to know about that was in there. Okay,

06:50 etcetera. Okay. Um, things video lectures. So what's I'm capturing

06:58 you see on the screen or what saying r will be available to

07:03 Uh, it's not the same day , definitely by the next morning.

07:07 . But pretty much the same Okay. So you will never not

07:12 any information if you don't come to . Right? It's there for

07:16 Okay, um, let's see exam here. That's the other thing.

07:22 there is never, it is never excuse to say. Well, I

07:26 the exam. I didn't know what was insane. Okay. I send

07:30 emails twice a week about these Syllabus tells you debates right smack in

07:36 face when you get in the blackboard . Right? So that is never

07:40 excuse I forgot. Okay. So, uh, but so make

07:46 note and put them in your stone . Okay. Um, schedule in

07:51 is basically gives you a form of this stuff going on. Just integrates

07:57 classes including All right. So all there for you. Okay.

08:03 another one. Here's the, here's course, schedule topics covered,

08:08 Um, smart work. Okay, this is the kind of the homework

08:13 . Um, that's this gives you schedule uh and there's some information in

08:18 as well. The weekly backboard So you click on this, it

08:24 give you the quizzes that are So if I click do,

08:30 so here's the different weekly quizzes, can see stuff that you can't see

08:38 available after next thursday. Okay then see it and then you can take

08:45 . We'll talk about this in a . Okay? This is where you'll

08:48 that and I'll tell you some Okay? Here's what covers. Here's

08:52 is um Okay so um let's So we go back to, okay

09:01 we got quizzes then we have, , the material flip classes, we'll

09:08 about that. Um you know, material. So these are all kind

09:11 organized four units that we cover for covering four different units and each one

09:18 the same. So it tells you here what the topics are that will

09:22 and you click on that and it's to you to review material will have

09:27 like a key terms list will it's on the exam thing. Uh

09:32 check that out. Any kind of clickers, flies and stuff shown during

09:38 will be available in that folder. uh lecture notes. Any kind of

09:43 and videos are relevant, are So it's all here for you and

09:48 course the unit one materials all available and then I think that's it.

09:55 . And organizational flyers, so uh I do have one to put in

10:01 . I got this morning. So that's you're interested in any kind of

10:06 stuff. So as uh a sm there's literally like maybe seven or eight

10:13 nine. Get flyers from posted, , so that's where you want to

10:18 and and the criminals. Okay? So I think I think that's everything

10:27 in terms of on blackboard. So again, for your own

10:30 just go through it real quick so make sure where stuff is that?

10:33 ? So let's go through back to . Alright. Um Blackboard, just

10:41 about. So another thing I didn't in that board is blackboard is integrated

10:47 the textbook. Okay. And so can access that, right? Hear

10:55 on that link. And it'll take to uh one. It's a way

11:00 access smart mark. Okay? You right to it if you if you

11:06 that access here, but then I've it into the different uh taken their

11:13 , book material which is actually has a listen for any objectives flashcards and

11:20 . So um organized by the chapters covered. Okay, so again,

11:26 is completely optional. Right? This this stuff, I mean smart work

11:30 technically optional, but but the material I didn't even have in there,

11:36 none of it's for a great, is all this additional stuff. You

11:40 find that majority on the blackboard and course material is enough for you.

11:45 right. But you do have the to look at it and see if

11:49 , you know, you may find helpful. Okay, so again,

11:52 another resource. But nothing nothing in is nothing any folders is for

11:59 Okay. Just give me the The stuff that counts are what we'll

12:03 about here in a second. so the great component. This is

12:07 does count for the great. So for example, uh weekly

12:13 uh unit quizzes, which many, more. Okay. Attendance by turning

12:22 I think they call that and then going down to attendance and performance.

12:27 go through that here in a There's two types of extra credit.

12:30 can get one tied to the clippers one is basically like a course evaluation

12:36 the Okay, so uh so make snapshot is this is what is not

12:43 to change it in the semester? , you had like four or five

12:46 extra credits? No. Okay, do you see here is what it

12:50 . Okay. Um but I also because I've had a handful of people

12:55 semester writing about week 89, They go, oh, I didn't

13:01 smart work with part of the course . Okay. Well it is a

13:06 smart work is um so just making , be aware of what's what's comprises

13:14 course breaking. Okay. So example casa. Okay, there's three different

13:20 , uh, these kinds available two , you have to reserve a time

13:24 , you have to register, I received documentation from one sheet from the

13:29 . Director has said faculty, can please post this? So I'll send

13:34 to you an email tomorrow. Probably take a look at it. It's

13:38 of just the caSA policies. If you, if you're late,

13:42 do you do, that kind of ? So I'll send it out

13:45 Okay? Um, but you must registered to sign up for a time

13:50 and exams are are taken throughout the . Right? So on an exam

13:55 , which is typically a friday saturday, I think you can take

14:01 at multiple times. You can sign for time starts at multiple times during

14:06 days, in fact. So it's everybody at once. It's throughout the

14:10 . Okay. Uh, so risk there, the blackboard quizzes. So

14:15 course the the caSA exams are, have like progress walking around in the

14:21 monitor. Uh blackboards are knocked These are not does not involve lockdown

14:28 or any of this stuff. You write your friends over for a

14:31 whatever was taking place. It doesn't that. So, um, but

14:37 , the the and they're available over period friday through monday. Okay.

14:43 once you start, right then the takes, right then these are 30

14:47 quizzes. The weekly quizzes. So day you choose to take it and

14:52 start that's from the 30 minutes starts . Okay so but again you've got

14:57 days to do that. Um questions are kind of come like maybe a

15:05 before an exam and there are more and cover uh you know the previous

15:11 or four chapters that recovered. So it's kind of a warm up

15:14 the exam to a degree. Um the quizzes, the unit quizzes,

15:21 are all really just old exam Right? So you're gonna you're gonna

15:25 a feel for what kind of questions asked. Okay by taking these black

15:30 . Okay. As well as what see in clicker questions. Right?

15:33 much the same style. Okay. and so of course you know quizzes

15:39 longer you got more time for Okay. Uh Smart work. So

15:44 is the time to textbook. The is optional. Okay it's uh it's

15:50 recommended I recommend some kind of a textbook just to give you a reference

15:57 . Honestly the E book is maybe cheapest way to go. Okay so

16:01 recommend that um But and so with smart work so you can access the

16:08 info on board, students said ideas you need to enter when you're signing

16:14 for this right? You can find in the syllabus you can find it

16:18 that smart work. okay? With five digit number I think um let's

16:25 then attendance. Alright so the so again, the cheapest option here

16:30 the mobile app. Okay, so recommend that uh if you already have

16:36 , but if you if you have hand held clicker that's fine too.

16:40 . Um I'm sure most people nowadays stuff carried over from the previous

16:45 so fine, whatever that is or have you, but you got to

16:49 sure that your license, your subscription active, right? So that's what

16:55 look at your account and look for check marks. Okay, so um

17:02 the attendance uh uh attendance, is somewhat not a super high bar 70%

17:14 attendance, which amounts to coming here out of 25 classics. Okay,

17:20 we got 73 days, do whatever want, right? Uh 73 days

17:26 to two for 63 and 3.5 Right? You can take off 3.5

17:31 . I did not come to no harm, no foul.

17:35 so because stuff happens you get sick and that and the other.

17:41 so this is a way to kind mechanism to kind of account for

17:44 So you have to stress about, , I missed especially since I recorded

17:48 stuff. Okay. Um so and don't because you have 73 days,

17:54 don't need to email me saying I'm going to be classic. No

17:57 As long as you within several I don't even know. Right?

18:02 um so but again, you will not know what's going on in class

18:08 you got the record lectures that. um I already have one mention

18:15 Check that your license is current. . Get the mobile app is the

18:20 option. Alright. All quicker Right? So the biggest the era

18:26 typically occurs with the hookers is not class using it or anything. It's

18:32 it's not seeing your points on blackboard that comes from from registering with a

18:41 . So don't register your clicker With personal email. Okay? Do not

18:48 that will interfere with the ability of points to show up on black.

18:54 , so that's the number one If you will, that occurs,

18:59 ? So people don't see their that's typically one. So when you

19:03 your picker, do not use personally us to Okay then you don't have

19:09 issues. Uh And I don't do other than hit a button. And

19:15 point's go from the point of solutions that captures it, hit the button

19:21 boom, it goes in the That's my that's my soul purpose in

19:27 thick of things. Just transferring The button. Points get transferred.

19:30 don't manipulate points or anything. It's are what they are. I'm just

19:34 . Okay. But again, just sure you register with your uhh email

19:39 you miss your clicker. Well, tough luck. Okay, I don't

19:43 paper solutions right? Gotta be coming your clicker okay? Or mobile

19:50 Okay? So again, you know got seven days where it's not gonna

19:58 . Okay? So the score we got two components Um attendance,

20:05 ? So you can come to class you just use the it doesn't matter

20:11 you answer, just use it enter answer. It's one point.

20:16 That's your attendance point. But there a threshold that you got to uh

20:24 of the questions presented. Okay, gonna give an example here in a

20:27 . Okay? So it's not like can just come here. Oh there's

20:31 question. Boom, answer it and gone and you get the attendance.

20:34 , you have to stay, you to earn that by staying for probably

20:38 duration. Okay? So so for it's two points for a correct

20:44 One point for incorrect. If you points either way, just get more

20:48 you're answering correctly. Okay, So grade itself is the sum of attendance

20:53 performance, right? You divide And when you see your points on

20:57 , we're gonna do a couple of questions today just to test it

21:01 So you can be familiar if you're familiar with it, most people are

21:05 so you can satisfy yourself that it's working. I'm gonna uh upload

21:09 points to blackboard so you can You , be rest assured that your points

21:13 there. If you don't see your , then you know something's not

21:16 Right. You can get it trigger points do not count until the

21:20 , which is next a week from thursday. So thursday next week,

21:25 they come up to that point, be doing quicker questions but you just

21:29 count and I'll post them. But you get to 26 delete these prior

21:36 sessions and then start reading. So again, this this three day

21:40 where uh pickers don't count, I'll a point. So you you're comfortable

21:45 your points are showing up and everything working fine, right or not,

21:49 you can get it fixed. So, for example. Right?

21:53 we say we have four questions in session. Okay? So we got

21:57 points. Okay? Nine points max . Right? So four questions

22:04 get them all correct. That's eight . And you get the tenants,

22:08 one, that's nine possible points. ? So you answer three or four

22:15 those questions, that's the 70% Right? So now you fulfill that

22:20 you get two out of four, 50% didn't read the 70%.

22:25 You get get above this threshold then got the one point regardless of how

22:31 question. Okay? So you can answer two or three. Okay?

22:38 two points. Two points. We got five performance points.

22:45 So then we just tallied up for day, you've got six points total

22:52 possible 57%. So that's how it's be a running. What you'll see

22:57 blackboard is the date of the day had different questions um and the points

23:05 got then you'll also see a calm attendance broken down by attendance and

23:10 Okay then um total points. So you can pretty much calculate your

23:19 rate at any point okay? By basic math. Okay, um,

23:25 . So I mentioned this already. just register, it may even have

23:29 be a kubernetes email just if it's um dot e D U. Just

23:32 long as you h email making uhh . Okay? Um not personal.

23:39 now, if you make a mistake you enter with your personal email,

23:44 not single points. Your points, a way to fix it, but

23:48 requires you having to call points Okay? And if that happens to

23:55 , if you're a victim of this , just let me know and I'll

23:58 the information law. Okay, um any question at this point? I'm

24:06 . Okay. All right. uh classes. All right. So

24:12 this is is kind of basically I a lot more uh um and this

24:19 may adjust this may be this but it's a what you're basically doing

24:25 is you are watching recording videos that cover these topics. Okay. And

24:35 you're gonna attempt to master the material your own. Okay, So then

24:40 come to class and it's like really much questions, well maybe some other

24:45 . Okay. But heavy, heavy questions I'm gonna ask you. So

24:49 gonna basically assessing how you're your own went right? How did my looking

24:54 the video lectures and so let's see I do want his questions. So

24:58 will be a bunch of that. of course, I'll frame some discussions

25:04 the questions based on. So that's of what this is, especially the

25:13 this um pro imperial cell structure and . You took intro bio, you

25:18 through the eukaryotic cell and there's a , there's a there's a bottom,

25:26 the same appropriate selves, they have own particular structures and a lot of

25:30 so severe. The structure was so that's a good one to

25:35 You kind of work on it yourself then you come here and ask questions

25:40 . Okay, so that's kind of this these flip class things are

25:43 Okay. Nothing to get nervous Okay, we'll just kinda changing it

25:48 a little bit and kind of putting of the onus on you, right

25:54 learn the material before coming to Okay. Um Okay, so

26:00 you have uh it'll be like at a week before when I'll have,

26:05 know, it's basically just going to the electric video have a week before

26:09 that you can start looking at Okay. And of course there's always

26:13 for all these things that are in , you know folder. Okay.

26:19 yeah, there is no extra great doing these things but you know,

26:23 respect in terms of the clipper Okay, so let's see here.

26:32 , alright. And probably that's all is is us policy. This was

26:39 last time I looked was maybe three ago. I didn't see a change

26:44 that point. But basically, you , if you're symptomatic um or just

26:52 um stay home for five days as rule right now this may change.

26:57 haven't looked at it like I said about three weeks so maybe there is

27:00 modification but just this is basically just flow chart. Just follow this.

27:04 . And if you have um uh you're coming to class for not exhibiting

27:09 of the covid symptoms etcetera etcetera. . Um I mean I had last

27:17 out of 700 people I think in classes I had, I think maybe

27:25 could come on on 10 fingers. had the number of covid cases.

27:28 this is obviously gone down a So anyway, so just just be

27:31 of this. Um Okay if you something exam, uh whatever.

27:41 Uh You missed an assignment examine this . Number one is just prompt communication

27:50 ? Prompt fast communication within 24 Number one. Number two verifiable

27:57 I love believe me I'd love to everybody out there work. I'm not

28:01 you a liar by saying show me evidence. It's what we gotta do

28:06 ? It's departmental policy if you rage . Okay so you got to as

28:12 as I'd like to believe you because easy to do right? But you

28:15 verify right whether it's a wreck tow driver invoice or whatever it is you

28:22 it's a medical excuse. Um Just dr what happened? Okay so prompt

28:30 , verifiable excuse. And the list verifiable valid excuses are listed in uh

28:37 policy thing on the in the Okay don't have health insurance. I

28:42 that. It's expensive. Right? can go to the clinic campus.

28:48 isn't free but I think it's gonna from what you're gonna get elsewhere I

28:53 . But if you're if you uh there are lots of free clinics around

29:00 . Okay and uh it doesn't cost anything so just google google Houston free

29:07 and you'll see a bunch of Okay um Okay excuse absence policy as

29:12 syllabus covid exam policy. Um Again if you throw in the covid examines

29:19 you're missing something. Just legging out please let me know. Don't wait

29:23 week in two weeks. Let me um Great dispute. So once something

29:30 posted you got like a week to okay this is B. S.

29:33 don't agree with this by. Okay that's well within your right to do

29:38 . Okay. Um Academic honesty So we don't really do any papers

29:43 things, right papers. So basically just the casa right? That's proctor's

29:50 the monitor. If anything happens in of cheating whatever I'll be notified by

29:55 with a formal documentation. So anyway don't do anything suspicious. Okay it's

30:01 main thing. Um Okay let's see . Um Yeah your questions and your

30:12 pop up generally it's gonna be 30 to a minute and then the clock

30:18 . So because some some questions may a little more reading. So of

30:23 I. Extended time. Um Let's I think oh the smart work um

30:34 have the option of what's called temporary . Okay it's like a free trial

30:40 right in the last two weeks. if you if that's what you do

30:44 took on that option and you start smart assignments. Remember that after two

30:49 is up then those points are gonna opening. You're gonna have to you're

30:55 have to actually at that point then . Okay just be aware of

31:00 Okay um I think that two week starts whenever you click the option.

31:07 just be aware of that. Uh mentioned that in my weekly emails.

31:13 uh let's see bi weekly email. any questions? Okay so of course

31:22 course breakdown so the unit one just of who what why and where of

31:29 right where how we design them, are they representative types? Uh Procure

31:35 um grows how they grow and highly growth. So antibiotics into microbial drugs

31:45 etcetera. Okay. Physical chemical So we kind of do that in

31:50 one, unit two two topics, and then metabolism. Okay so we

31:59 different aspects of your familiarity. Have that metabolism is the old caucasus in

32:06 respiration material cover. But we also other stuff which is kind of this

32:12 you may not be familiar with down , you're gonna be familiar with

32:16 The bacterial types have other metabolisms beyond old boring like colossus and the inspiration

32:23 you're used to. Okay so we'll at some of those things. Okay

32:28 three is kind of a little bit aspect of microbial ecology and then um

32:34 of I guess you'd call it one material genetics. So we'll cover some

32:39 that including gene regulation. Uh If have lactose opera a bazillion times or

32:44 have a visiting one uh recover some things to write. The last quarter

32:50 the course is medical microbiology. So gonna feel for uh immune systems microbial

32:59 , how they overcome your immune system cause disease and then finding different types

33:03 diseases that that's basically the breakdown of course. Okay so um now the

33:13 next thing here is this so let's at this question. So uh to

33:19 here is if you got the mobile right, you gotta put that in

33:25 session. Okay. This one as likely have seen this has been up

33:30 we started. So when you come , make a note of that and

33:34 the number in your uh I promise too. Okay if you got the

33:40 fashioned handle cookers. 41. So the question. So uh kind of

33:48 this question to kind of frame in next five minutes around. So I

33:53 a specific grade I must make in course. My life depends on I

33:58 to see this. Great in order graduate stay off probation, maintain the

34:04 or other. Okay this applies to A. B. This does not

34:10 . Don't pay attention to those things the bottom. That's kind of just

34:13 me to mention. Uh So it's other things to do and remind me

34:20 I will have a brain cramp every in a while is to do that

34:24 pole. So now you can Okay. And the response is going

34:32 24 30. So again right now pictures are just for practice only uh

34:37 a point. So you can see and make sure systems working time.

34:41 it's not then that's a you know a clue to get it fixed.

34:50 and I don't expect I certainly don't everybody have their clickers yet. So

34:55 let's um It's yes, there's a . That's what you'll see.

35:04 Sorry, back up here. This what you'll see during class.

35:22 we're gonna wind down. So I'm say I believe you got 95% say

35:28 to be my guess. uh 90 61 of 70. That's

35:37 of course. I mean that's I assume that. Right? So the

35:43 I put this in there everything after that um your grade in the

35:50 We already mentioned that that was great . Right for exams, backward

35:56 Start work extra. That's it. . Um My position uh is as

36:06 a research faculty. Okay. As of your other, it's Here they

36:12 research faculty. I'm instructional faculty. , so I'm here to help

36:20 Okay. Hence the point here about 20-1415. What do you say?

36:30 time frame for the semester does everybody my help? Week 15.

36:36 so I don't know them from And you come here, come the

36:41 I need I need help. Give I've had here all the trials and

36:46 that the person is going to bring two years a bunch of insert your

36:55 expletive. Um Yes of course it's hell with families and hardships and things

37:05 that. The unfortunate part is I assign hardship points. This person gets

37:12 points because they had gone through that sounds harsh. But I mean I

37:18 to be fair to everybody in right? We're all in the same

37:21 the same boat. Okay. So but if you are having difficulties or

37:28 or that communicate, let me Okay, so the point is I

37:35 help you and we just went through . Absolutely. From the office

37:39 Uh in person or online. Go . Get help. Okay. That's

37:44 I can help with the content and the material. Okay, Understanding the

37:49 . So I can't do anything after 15. Well, except help you

37:54 exam four, which is in the period. But I can't I'm actually

37:58 can't just throw out points. hold this up. Okay. So

38:03 you know just and I can't, know, points for effort. Because

38:07 most common thing that email there the is I tried and tried and tried

38:11 put so much effort. I don't that. I don't doubt it for

38:14 minute. Okay, but effort as all know using a sports analogy.

38:22 , if I am playing for the Texans, right? Okay, there's

38:29 humongous person in front of me. a block. I can give 1,000%

38:34 . AM I gonna move that No, don't be crushed to a

38:38 . Okay. But the point is does not equate to a an

38:44 Okay. It did when you see exam distribution, there only be one

38:48 . It really has 100. Of that's not reality. So but let

38:55 help. Okay. So helping semester You know have a process. You

39:02 , if you if you make a on exam one that is a humongous

39:07 flag that you need help. Because I can guarantee you most people

39:12 they do is say, oh I'll study harder on exam fee and it

39:18 change. It doesn't change, It's it's another 40. Trust

39:24 I've been doing this for 18 years . I've seen it all.

39:31 And it doesn't work. Okay. help. There's no shame in

39:36 Okay. Um all right. And we talked to the point is Don't

39:45 mute. Okay? If you're making and 30 goodness you know, why

39:51 you run screaming to my office? . Because just doing the same thing

39:56 and over again as we all know the definition of insanity. Okay.

40:01 don't do that. Alright, Change up. Okay. So what do

40:05 do? Well develop a routine, kind of routine. You probably have

40:11 that works for you, but you not be sure that the work in

40:16 . Okay. So what you wanna is this is just saying all this

40:22 the point, but you know, something before you come to task.

40:26 come here as a blank slate. gonna get so we use the correct

40:33 . You don't have to memorize everything try to understand conceptualize, integrate.

40:39 ask yourself this question constantly. What me think? I noticed?

40:45 The okay. Uh that question is constantly have to ask yourself.

40:57 the answer that question is that well read the book the lecture notes.

41:01 not the answer. Okay. You to be able to explain these things

41:06 . Um however, you know it go through that in a second.

41:10 ? So read the relevant textbook attend lecture, take notes. All

41:15 . Um the election was on blackboard well. You can just right on

41:19 of there. What have you uh lecture video afterwards. Okay, review

41:24 things as you may have to repeat of these things, but then synthesized

41:29 in your own words. I say a review that's already available. For

41:35 . I take that as well as an outline. Okay, but take

41:39 the topics and what you do is me take the weekly quiz of

41:44 Let me go ahead here. so I just wrote one time.

41:49 check your forward bacterial. Okay, so if you study chapter four before

41:54 just take it take it in chunks next week. We'll start this week

41:59 Chapter one. Right? And take in chunks, right? Maybe a

42:03 or a quarter or half whatever you're with. Okay and you pick out

42:08 or four of those headers from the that pertain to chapter one here.

42:12 looking at chapter 40 okay the growth kind of a big, is the

42:16 topic of chapter four. Okay you okay so you've done the studying,

42:22 gonna study, tackle this number A B and C. Of executive

42:29 , do whatever it is you do think you've mastered it? You

42:32 yeah I know this, let's do . What you're gonna do is take

42:36 blank sheet of paper and pencil lock in the closet, No other no

42:40 resources around nobody else do it. you write that growth. Okay,

42:46 like you see on the slide then go, okay what do I know

42:50 this? Well I just put just on a bunch of stuff before

42:54 So uh see well they had the curve associated with that growth curve.

43:00 , it's gonna be lag log stationary phase growth requirements, right? It

43:05 be the elementary part. Right? how much of this you fill out

43:16 relates to how much you know And you're not this is not an

43:20 in tray serie in, let me here and right from the boat that

43:25 purpose of the whole thing, What you're trying to do is get

43:29 accurate um an accurate picture of what brain knows about this topic, Okay

43:41 don't have it right in front of face, right? You sit down

43:44 30 minutes and this is what you blank sheet. You should be run

43:50 to my office. I don't get . Okay. What happened? So

43:56 purposes here? It's not absolute It's about How much, how long

44:01 I notice? Is it? Then check it afterwards with various sources,

44:06 notes and both, you know, got this right, I got that

44:10 . This is mostly right. So get a basically 100%. I know

44:14 70% of the material here. Um I know nothing. Okay.

44:19 answer is equally important. You don't something, something's not working right in

44:24 studying. So again, do this chunks, manageable chunks throughout generations.

44:34 yesterday. Okay. And then um by exam time becomes uh before your

44:42 , it's like okay you're gonna do , this is just kind of doing

44:45 . So and it may end up to repeat the exercise, right?

44:50 so and there's gonna be some topics likely you just blow right through

44:55 No problem. So maybe give you difficulty which you need to know those

44:59 . Okay, so don't think of as an exercise of, I gotta

45:02 $100 to exercise, but I really about this. Somebody fooling myself.

45:07 I really think I know this and don't okay, that's often the

45:11 So do this kind of exercise. mean, it has different names?

45:16 don't wanna I don't put a name it. Like concept concept concept mapping

45:20 one thing, but it doesn't have be even pretty. It can be

45:24 , right? And maybe it can a diagram right? To explain the

45:28 . It can be fragments of you know, however it is

45:31 you know, it, write it and then check it right, then

45:37 your it's gonna help. Okay, me. Okay, So, um

45:43 you may go, okay, I'm gonna try my method first.

45:47 , And now you can bother with . Okay, Which is fine

45:49 Right? And that may work for if it does fantastic. Okay,

45:54 if you if it doesn't go then consider doing this, right?

46:00 , that's my advice. Alright, can always come to office hours and

46:05 it further if you want. That's . Okay, That's what I'm there

46:09 . Okay. That's kind of my cents about how to study for this

46:12 . Okay, um and you get of resources and like, all

46:16 you can go through quizzes, Uh so forth. Okay. And

46:21 is a document on blackboard. It of gives you another example of this

46:24 well, if you want to look it. Okay, Okay, So

46:27 another clipper. Question this really crazy I had throughout this thing.

46:33 really come into play. Okay. what's the following is are not produced

46:38 microbes? Are they all produced by ? Okay. And d d is

46:46 to be like the cosmetics. Any questions while you're mulling this over?

47:05 . You know what the method I about? You would I would say

47:10 you're getting ready to start, let's unit one write chapter one.

47:14 So look at the exam review sheet maybe pick a quarter a quarter of

47:21 header things and say I want to my study on that, right?

47:24 then you go back on your you're right, Whatever that topic was

47:29 then pleasure that. Yeah, Yeah, I did a little bit

47:33 a time. So if you do , wait till the end, it's

47:35 much, it's too much. let's see what we got. And

47:43 answer is, oh jeez, They're all produced by microbes.

47:51 Um the blue jeans, that's the dye is produced by microbes. Um

47:59 terms of cosmetics is different types of chemicals and skin products and things are

48:04 by microbes that they use. I there's a change of course, ferment

48:09 , fermented cabbage, OxiClean has A lot of insurgents have enzymes produced

48:13 microbes used as well as antipsychotics, serotonin, a few others like this

48:20 microbes that are found in medicine. yeah, they're uh wide variety.

48:25 , so 11 last question here. , and this will allow us to

48:32 saying we'll talk about next time. Let's take a look. So remember

49:25 I'll post these points after class so probably see him this afternoon. So

49:29 you did use a clicker go take look on blackboard later today just to

49:33 sure that your points are shown. . I think we're at about 80

49:38 our head count. Let's see what get. The answer is actually is

49:45 none of folks, these are all . Okay so ai using that to

49:53 um So like I said we're gonna they'll be into some of these uh

50:00 here next time we'll see you thursday and uh um Yes I'm looking.

50:27 thanks may may. Yeah, Of not. As I said the past

50:58 the past 26. Yeah. Well may check. Make sure. So

51:14 the there's a folder on blackboard called point information. Just check in

51:19 It'll tell you if you're a new user but you will need to see

51:24 you have the green check marks, see that. Uh Yeah you could

51:37 could just get the access maybe if go into uh that that Well they

51:52 it in there and we put on . So I think I think the

51:57 standard maybe $30. And you think like a baby box so you can

52:03 the two. Yeah. Sure. . Yes, you can be completely

52:18 . Yes. Absolutely. Absolutely. . Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

52:33 . Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. the actual device with mechanisms to

52:38 But yes. No, they don't
